Walker from Cincinnati Declared ineligble?

Post by Globetrotter »

Where does he go from here? Can he go to College/Prep or does he need to transfer to an out of Ohio school.

I would say so, if he can find another state that goes by age and not by "8 semesters completed". But if all states have that rule, which it seems like they might, because it makes sense, I think he's screwed. That or find a prep school. If he hasn't graduated, he wouldn't be able to make the jump to college, and I don't even know what a prep school would do towards getting him to graduation.

A slew of top high school players have been considering going to Europe to play for a year before entering the NBA draft as opposed to doing a Carmelo.

He needs to graduate from high school or attain his GED before he worries about anything else.

Even prep school? Good.

And I'd hope that somewhere in the NBA's mess of money-making rules, they have something about at least a HS diploma or at least an equivalent before anyone gets signed. Otherwise, that would get stupid with some kids.

Depends upon how you define "Prep school"

St. John's in Toledo considers itself to be a prep school.

For college basketball players, Fork Union Military Academy is a spot where a number fo them went after graduating from high school for a year of prep school before heading off to college.

So to answer your question, it all boils down to the definition of a "prep school".

okay, how about "diploma mill"??

I was thinking more along Fork Union lines than St. John's. What are the admission "standards" of places like Fork Union?

Fork Union is actually a high school AND a prep school. It is being investigated by the NCAA.

The NCAA is starting to crack down on those diploma mills. See the link below:

There's one in MAine as well-I think Shane Rominski went ther.Don't know if they really prepare or if they pass folks along but they do seem popular with the athletic set.

all I know is Bill Walker needs to get away from OJ Mayo before he gets into trouble with the law, like Mayo has

Granted, OJ was/is foolish for getting suspended from school for things like carrying a cell phone and fighting with a rumored female, but has he really gotten into trouble with the law?

As for Walker, the next nine months should be rather intriguing to say the least.

From preliminary things that I have read, apparently he had an outstanding ABCD camp last week and coaches/scouts came away as much or more impressed with Walker and his pro potential than Mayo. The consensus coming from the camp is that Mayo seems "bored" with HS ball. When you're that much better than the competition that Ohio has to offer, you can get "bored." They are far and away the best team in D3 in Ohio. Considering they were one of 2 or 3 teams nationally that beat Canton-McKinley, the two time defending D1 champions backs that statement up.

Where the ABCD camp and Walker and his future come together is the NBA Draft. Current rules stipulate that you must be 19 and a year removed from your graduating high school class. Walker confirmed today he intends to stay at NCH and that "playing basketball in high school is not all that important to me." So, how is his graduating class defined?

OHSAA contends his graduating class graduated in June (2006). Since he played a "freshman" year at Rose Hill, KY "Christian" High School and then transferred to NCH as an 8th grader (Mayo's class). If I remember correctly Walker was always listed as a year older than Mayo in the OHSAA program at the state tournament. The NBA is going to contend that Walker's graduating class will be with Mayo and in June 2007. I'm sure a court battle will insue about whether Walker is eligible. The other rumor surfacing on draft pages is that Walker could potentially turn 20 in June 2007 meaning the 19 year old age limit is out the window and Walker would be eligible, but when does he have to be 20 by? The draft? or the deadline?

Either way the NCH soap-opera is far from over but they are still the odds on favorite to do what no other Ohio team has done and win 3 state titles in a row.
