Stroia Named Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

Bowling Green State University men's basketball coach Dan Dakich has named John Stroia as assistant coach for the Falcons. He will begin his duties immediately.

"John adds a veteran presence to our staff and his knowledge of this area in particular will be a tremendous asset to our program," said Dakich. "He has Division I head coaching experience and during his time as an assistant at Weber State, he was able to be part of a program that went undefeated in a very competitive league and went to the NCAA Tournament.

Stroia, who shares the same hometown as Dakich, Merrillville, Indiana, comes to BGSU after serving as an assistant coach at Weber State since 1999. During his tenure, the Wildcats won 116 games, a Big Sky Conference title in 2003 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament that same year.

He also is now stranger to the state of Ohio. He was the head basketball coach at Youngstown State from 1989-93 after coming to YSU as an assistant coach on the staff of former NBA head coach Jim Cleamons from 1987-89. From 1982-87, he was head men's basketball coach and coordinator of athletics at Ohio State-Lima and Lima Technical College from 1982-87.

Stroia also has experience coaching on the professional level working working with the Magic City Snow Bears of the International Basketball Association in 1997-98. From 1993-98, he was the Editor/Publisher of Hoosierland Basketball Review from 1993-98.

He also has extensive experience on the summer camp circuit serving as an instructor at the prestigious 5-Star Basketball Camp and for camps of some of the top college coaches in the country including Bobby Knight, Dean Smith, Mike Krzyewski, and Gene Keady.

Stroia also has worked in the MAC serving as a graduate assistant in 1981-82 at Ball State. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1981 and his master's degree in physical education from BSU in 1982.

"This is a great opportunity for me to work with Coach Dakich and a quality program like Bowling Green," Stroia said.

So he probably "nows" Harold Arceneux, the guy was awesome for Weber State in the tourney.

He must have been the head coach of the Penguins when Ed Colbert knocked that guys tooth out at mid court.

Good hire, guy with HC experience, D1 experience, and Ohio recruiting knowledge.

Why wasnt Lamonta Stone given the job? I almost think this is a slap in the face considering what this guy has done recruiting wise but maybe its just me. Is Stone not ready for that kind of position yet or what? We gotta be carefull we dont' lose this guy he's too good of a recruiter.

Maybe because Lamonta Stone already has an assistant coaches job at BG? I mean, sure the extra pay would be nice for him, but does he REALLY need to take up two spots on the sideline?

No , I'm talking about the head assistant job, that is what this John Stroia is right? I was just expecting that Stone would be the logical choice, but maybe thats just me. If this hire helps the program get out of the cellar then great.

It is my understanding that Lamonta is now the top assistant.

Well, with the hiring of Stroia he wouldnt' be anymore I guess. How many assistants does a typical D1 head coach have anyway? I always thought 2 with the other guy usually being a graduate assistant. Maybe 3 is the average # as we did have Stone and Pepela and the young guy that was coaching the forwards and centers.

Uh...I'm not sure. I thought I read that he was but maybe not. Maybe cuz its hard to believe that a guy with Stroia's experience would be anything but at least a head assistant coach. If you have more info then by all means let us know.

Stone is the top assistant and deservedly so. This designation went from Keith Noftz to Artie to Coach Stone.

D-I coaches are allowed three paid assistant coaches with the third assistant being considered a "restricted earnings" coach.

Many programs also carry a Director of Basketball Operations (no on-floor coaching) position and GA's as well.
