What exactly happened with the BG/OU bands?
What exactly happened with the BG/OU bands?
Forgive me for not knowing much about BG's band, but can someone please explain to me what exactly happened between BG and OU's bands that sparked some uneasiness that some of you are referring to? I have no idea what this is all about, but would like to know the story.

One situation happened the year before I was a freshman, so if I miss anything, maybe ohiogal, rightupinthere, or Grant can help clear it up.
Basically, OU's band (and I have not seen them in awhile) used to be very aggressive, to say the least, and taunted other bands, teams, fans etc. Nothing wrong with that to a certain degree, but they would go over the line alot. It seemed there were no limits for them. The bands from school to school were usually pretty supportive of each other. Not them.
As I heard it, the story is that at the MAC tourney in spring '91, BG had a feature twirler at halftime. She was pretty much chased off the floor by the OU band. Exactly what was meant by 'chased off' I don't know. Anyway, our assistant director of bands supposedly wrote letters to all the other directors in the conference asking them to not allow OU to travel to their games. The story is that they didn't travel to conference games much for awhile after that.
That's exactly how the whole thing was explained to me in '92. Don't know how accurate all the details are, so I sure won't swear by it.
What I do know is we played them again in '92 (on the same assistant directors birthday) and the two bands sat side by side behind the same basket. They were all over us in the early part of the game, yelling, swearing, taunting us the whole time. We pretty much ignored them and focused on yelling at Trent and company. Thats the game where some of our piccs got spit on by Trent. When we won that game, we got all over the OU band as they were packing up and we were still playing. They walked out frowning and flipping us off, but tails between their legs. That was another great day to be a bleeping falcon.

the 110 have been doing this for years...
1993...homecoming....vs. Miami. The 110 performing until...
The kickers for Miami come out to get a few kicks in before the 2nd half. The alumni band (along with some student body members) run onto the field and take the bag of footballs being used and run throughout the south endzone of Peden to the cheers of the crowd. They distrubuted the footballs to the students, fans, or whomever wanted one. After awhile, the old geezers got tired, were tackled, and pumbled but...in the end...the bravery of those fine alumni band members will never be forgotten!
Great story...or, at least...I think so.
I never heard of the 91 story...I know the Ohio State band got some of their tubas dented at a 94 b-ball game...the best waste of a damn band got mad and cried and played accross the field for a couple hundred times and got over it. Oh..and the Bobcats won by 15.
The 110 is awesome...if not because of their legacy but because they are...well...goddamn entertaining to about everyone which is a lot more than many college bands (YAWWWN) can say! They have calmed down a whole lot...basically the prez told them to cool it or they would turn them into a corps(e) band...we got mad...they cleaned up...a bit but, at least we didn't go corpse.
Anyway...I probably ruffled some feathers but...well any band who has a hot tub party for charity (lesson learned...beer and hot tubs aren't always a good mix) is okay with me!

That Marching 110 is no joke. My roommate Freshman year was in the marching 110 and I went to some of their parties. Girls who were 5th year seniors, are on any young guy who walks in. They party until dawn all the time. Its a pretty impressive outfit when they can combine that lifestyle with great enthusiasm at performances and a solid level of skill. Most of the 110 watched them play sometime in high school and from that point forward they were convinced that is what they wanted to do in college.
Growing up in Athens and playing for the high school, the only thing anyone dreamed of was to play for Don Peden.", 1950 OU graduate. "He was the most respected man in town."

I think when you dent someone's tuba section that's like running over the hockey team's goalie. You gotta stand up for them! Of course, the OSU band are little beeeatches and don't say anything.

Yeah, myself and one of the drummers, Scott Malchus I think, were pretty vocal about the incident when it happened too. It was up at Joe Lewis (yea, I know...I played my bass in the same venue as oh...let's say GENE SIMMONS... and TONS OF OTHER AMAZING MUSICIANS!!!) After Scott and I made our displeasure with the antics of the OU pep band, they made sure to come over and swing their sousaphones and trombone slides right in our faces during their time-outs. It actually prompted the referees to give them a warning telling them their next act like that would result in a technical foul against their team b/c they were so obnoxious and rude. Personally, I've always enjoyed OU's band. They've got a kind of brash and raucous style of bandsmanship. It's different, and it can be fun. They definitely crossed over the line that time though. Sure...Scott and I (and even Jay Jackson) provoked them a little... but they had no right to do what they did to our twirler and subsequently had no right to come out of their area to taunt us.

I remember in this time period MAC hoops tourney at Cobo in which the BG band started playing during a time out and the OU band just played over them. I understand it to be common courtesy in tourney's to rotate TOs for cheerleaders and bands. That can't happen anymore...atleast at the Gund. They have people that are getting paid just to tell the band when they get to play. With one by each band and people telling them what to do from somewhere else, it's pretty well organized. If you play when you aren't supposed to though, the other band gets your next turn!
