It is an awesome picture. In one fell swoop it captures why our defense was lousy and cost us not only that game, but others last year as well. What we see there is a player going in to make a "tackle" with his head down. Big no-no. He compounds that by leading just with his shoulder and showing absolutely no effort in trying to wrap up.
I'm no football coach, but that is some of the worst form I've ever seen captured in a still photo...kudos to the photographer. Smith was fun to watch because he made some big plays last year, but I cringed every time he had to make a tackle. He was alwyas trying to get in sportscenter with big hits (which he sometimes made some nice ones), but rarely did he make a sure tackle. I'll take a guy who can actually make all the tackles over the big hit or whiff completely type player that Smith is.
He is a CB, so we're not exactly asking him to make a ton of tackles, but if I were Lovett I'd have this picture on our bulletin board of what not to do. Until this team learns to tackle we will continue to be mediocre.
hammb, those were my exact thoughts as well. While big hits are fun to see, they are usually the result of incredibly poor tackling technique and just launching your body into the ball carrier. I don't know how many times every weekend when watching football that I point these same things out to my son while the announcer spews Reghi-like drool over the hit.
On a side note, I am taking over as the defensive coordinator for my sons seventh grade football team. Hammb, you are more then welcome to come help!

I agree, WH. It was an awesome hit but hammb brings up valid points about the poor tackling form. I really hope in the off season that "Proper Tackling 101" was on the class list of every defensive player.

I caught part of Brandon's interview on "The Ticket" the other day and he did talk specifically about working on the fundamentals, blocking and takling better. So I hope that pays off and we see a much better defense this year.

That's what I liked about Dozier's hit in the spring game. He really stuck Parks, but he also wrapped him and took him down while doing it.
So far as Ream goes...he was listed at 235lbs on signing day in 2005. I doubt that he hasn't put on any size since he's been here....not that I'm trying to be a size queen about it or anything...

Agreed that was a big hit that was also a textbook tackle. Now THAT is one I'd like to see some stills of
Big hits AND wrap-up tackles all in one is the best thing ever. Bernard Pollard from Purdue was the KING at that and he will be sorely missed here in WL this year. I didnt see Dozier's hit in the spring game, but I'd sure love to see it on Stocco and make sportscenter like Tonio did last year!

I'm updating my BG roster again on '07, and was reading the 1st post to this read and was wondering if anyone knew what happend to Scott Goodwin and Andre Boomer? They were both listed as starters and now not even on the depth chart, was wondering if anyone had heard what happend? Also does anyone else find it a bit of a surprise that true frosh Jahmal Brown is listed as the back up CB to Lewis, ahead of Van Johnson and other true frosh P.J. Mahone?

Not if you go back and watch Brown's recruit video, it's not a suprise to me at all. You wanna talk about wrapping and hitting, just take a look at how he took that running back on head up and wrapped/lifted/and pile drived him into the ground.
