BGSU Crazy Fan 58 wrote:Sports is my whole life, therefore I picked BG mostly because of its sports teams. They have a good football program, an awesome basketball arena, and are one of 3 schools in Ohio to have a D1 hockey team. So I wanted to go to a school that was D1, catered to students attending sporting events, and since I'm a big hockey fan- a hockey program. So it basically was narrowed down to OSU, Miami, and BG. OSU is way too big and Miami was too far from home. And here I am about to start my 3rd year and absolutely love it at BG. About 90% of the reason I came to BGSU was athletics. The other 10% was having a good sport management program and being in a nice, small college town with a cool campus. Sometimes people do choose schools based on sports.
Its like you took the words out of my mouth, except I never considered OSU cause I don't like them, and Miami was too close to home for me. The main reason I came to BG was the sport management program, but second was sports, as sports is also my life. I just wanted to go to a D-1 school that had football, leaving 119 choices, and like BGSU Crazy Fan 58 I love it at BG. I don't care if students leave to watch OSU for the simple fact that I dislike OSU, and I don't care what their fans do

Yeah certainly education is the #1 priority...it caused me to re-prioritize within my first 3 weeks there.

But what if you picked the school because they had a Football AND hockey team???

Now that's a DIFFERENTIATOR...is there really that much difference in various schools' 200-level Microeconomics classes? or how about the blow-off social science eelectives?

As for myself, I had such great loyalty to Ohio State before I had ever heard of Bowling Green, I came to Bowling Green because I wanted to be a teacher, and now Im the photo editor at the BG news and a photographer for the BG sentinel, so I cant say Im here for what I originally wanted..anyways I love BG, but Im realistic as well, and I know that there is no chance BG will win a NC as long as there is the BCS system, so I just pull for them to win the MAC, and make a good bowl game. I pull for tOSU to win EVERY GAME and eventually the NC. As far as leaving games, I have to admit if im not shooting the game, I dont really go to BG games unless it is homecoming, UT, Miami, or another big team. Its actually kind of embarrassing seeing how few fans go into the doyt and I dont get excited because the fans sit on their hands all game. Just my 2 cents..

Will you be pulling for them to win against BG this year?

I was actually nodding in a little agreement, or understanding, with your post until you got to this. You say yourself that you only go to games you're working or a big opponent, but then you're embarrassed that no one goes to games?

Really, how does that work?

My favorite types of problems are the ones upon which I can have a direct impact. You, my friend, are in such a position. You can have a direct impact on the number of people at the Doyt - you show up (and stay) and there are immediately more people at the game. You make a lot of noise and you've immediately had an impact on the second item.

Be a part of the solution, my friend, not a part of the problem.

jacobs, yes i will be rooting for OSU, they have a lot more on the line than bg does, and it is basically a big payday for BG. I want BG to compete and not get embarrassed but really, is BG going to compete for a NC?

TG..Thats why I say I hate to admit it.. I love college football so I dont care if BG is playing st. marys school for the blind, I will go watch them play if OSU doesnt have a game. I would rather go watch OSU on tv where it is more exciting with them playing a better team, than to watch BG play Kent St. with 1500 quiet fans.. Just my opinion..and I know its bad because I could be trying to make a difference, but like i said in my earlier post..I was born (literally at OSU medical center) and raised with Ohio State and I will always be loyal to them.

From the two seasons I've watched of football here, I can tell you that its the same in most places in most sports. If the games aren't good its gonna be hard to get the fans riled up (with a few exceptions i.e. big ten schools and a few southern schools). When you play a team like Temple or Buffalo and stomp the everloving pi$$ out of them and win by seventy points it really isn't all that exciting to watch. That seemed to be our problem two years ago with Omar throwing a touchdown pass on what seemed like every other play. As for this year, my favorite part of football is defense, crushing, intimidating and hard hitting defense. If a team can't play any sort of defense and the game turns into a shootout it can be exciting but often times it doesn't work out for the better and fans lose interest.
If we could get some defense going this year and maybe sprout a big playmaker for the next few seasons I think the team will be a lot more exciting to watch and more fans will come and scream and The Doyt will once again be an intimidating place to come into once more.
One thing you can be sure of, I'll be there for every home game and every away game I can myself to screaming and playing my face off.
Yeah right girl!

I am still loyal to OSU as well, I grew up rooting for them all my life.

Still, I cannot fathom rooting against my alma mater for any reason. It's your choice, and all, but I think you're looking at it wrong. You say OSU has more to lose in that game, and to be sure you're right, but who has more to gain? Without a doubt BG beating OSU would be HUGE news in the college football world.

I talk to people all the time that were OSU people before going to MAC schools and they still root for OSU over their alma mater. I still don't understand how you can put 4+ years of your life into an institution and not feel a connection to their sports teams over some childhood team, but that's just my opinion. I don't get where the no excitement with going to the games comes from either. My senior year was Urban's first year here, and we had a ton of students at all those games, and we had a blast.

You're entitled to do whatever you want, but I think this statement sucks.

Like hammb, I also had a blast going to all the football games and sitting in the student section with all my friends. Some of my fondest memories from college come from Saturday afternoons in the Doyt.

I could see how it wouldn't be exciting for an Ohio State fan though. If you don't really care about the team you're watching, a lot of excitement is lost. It's probably hard to concentrate on a BG game when OSU has an exciting tilt vs. YSU coming up later on that day.

I came to BG for three reasons, "Beer, Babes and Broadcasting." When I changed my major to English from RTVF it became "everclear, estrogen and English."

I didn't really like how that new phase sounded, so I started telling people it was none of their f*cking business why I came to BGSU. I generally refer to that period of my life as "the time when few people would even look at me, much less talk to me". I'm hoping that that period will come to an end soon...

I can understand the reason of growing up as an OSU fan your whole life and rooting for them...but even my dad who went to 3 of the 4 home games with me last year wondered why half of the students were leaving at halftime, I explained to him and he was shocked that students wouldn't support their own football team for a whole game.

I'm not meaning to rag on Buckeye fans, I grew up loving BG, my brother went here from when I was 8-13 years old...I kinda grew up on BG's campus, and I pushed myself in high school to get a good GPA so I could attend BG...I just wonder why all the kids who grew up OSU fans didn't push themselves to go to OSU but ended up going to mid-major schools.

Great point. I have to tell you, if I was a huge fan of a school before I went to college, that's where I would've set my target. Around here, there are tons of kids who are all about Penn State, then end up at smaller schools, but never kick the Blue & White habit. Good grief, if you love the school that much - wouldn't you want to go there? I just don't get it.

I don't know -- I was raised a huge Michigan fan. I actually use to make fun of my dad for rooting for BG (he's an alum). But I never really considered Michigan as a potential college for me. BG was actually the biggest school I looked at. I hate cities, and I hate lots of people in one place. BG was definitely a better fit for me than Michigan would have been. I had the credentials to get into any school in the country, but I chose BG because it just felt right.

My fandom changed drastically once I got to BG though. Sure, I still root for Michigan in all sports, but always as a secondary to the Falcons, and not nearly as vehemently as I did growing up. I have pride in my Alma Mater, and I get a little prickly when others don't.

Funny, my hate for OSU has persisted through it all. :)
