And, in 2004, People on Buckeye Planet knew we'd have a down year..

Last year.. this year.. there was/is reason to believe OSU would/will have a truely great season...

Anyway... OU fans.. Miami fans.. maybe I'm blinded, but those guys are worse. Oh.. and Notre Dame fans...

No way. Ask 100 neutral fans that have interacted with all of the above and my guess is 70-80 would say Buckeyes are the worst.

Yeah, maybe.. I don't know.. after all, I am one of "them"

I suspect a lot of it has to do with something else... that being living in Ohio... I bet if you're a Central Florida Fan living in Miami, you've had more than enough Cane talk.

Ohio State football dominates Ohio... and I don't mean that in the "we can beat all comers" sense.. I mean that in that all cities in Ohio - from Cleveland to Cincinnati, to Dayton to Toledo... all of them cover Ohio State football. People, state wide care about Ohio State.... That's not because there aren't other schools worthy of rooting for, or any such nonsense. The fact is, since about 1922 Ohio State football has made an effort to make Ohio State football a state wide, and not just city wide, institution. That, and the fact that because OSU is such a large institution there is a ton of alumni all over ohio..

Arrogance? I don't know.. maybe.. I just see it as popularity.

Bingo. That's a huge reason why people around here are so prickly about OSU. Most OSU fans like to shove that in our faces every chance they get.

I hate OSU, but I love to talk about football. I'll discuss any football team in the country for any length of time with somebody that can actually have a logical discussion and concede points when they're obvious. I can admit the Buckeyes will probably have one of the best and most talented teams in the country. But anybody with half a brain should be able to see that they also have some serious question marks going into this season, especially on defense. The majority of OSU fans I've talked to can't see that.

Well, you might be right. That is the heart of the difference here. BG loses 7 starters off a rather inept defense and everyone (let say everyone refers to media types) expects the replacements to step in this year and stink for the most part as well because they have no experience. So given the inexperience us true BG fans recognize that we could go 10-2 or we could go 2-10 just as easily.

OTOH, the Buckeyes lose basically everyone from a great defense, yet everyone (media types and psycho OSU fans) thinks their defense will be even better this year. They get ranked #1 in most polls with the same inexperience issue yet no (maybe I should say few) Buckeye fans think there is any chance that their defense must might stink it up this year. And if their defense stinks, they just might lose three, four, five games.

I agree with this and think it is at the stem of why some of us do not like to be innundated with tOSU football. Because of this mindset we feel that tOSU football is infringing on our turf. Not to mention it is presumed that since we grew up in Ohio we must root for Ohio State despite having no connections to Cowbus or the school. Buckeye football has taken a life and turn similar to what pro teams do as far as marketing, reaching and growing their fan base.

HOLY [EXPLETIVE]! Have meetings all day and look what I miss!

I love this board.

There, Grant. Take that sunshine up your pucker.

Back to - what was this thread about?

I don't remember Buckeyeskickbuttocks being a negative ninny. He asked a question regarding BG. I would love to answer, but no time.

Perhaps he should ask in another thread. Then we can just talk about FOOTBALL.

Well, the way I see it... No team in the country this year is untouchable. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the two teams in the BCS Championship game have 1 loss each. I'm usually a proponant of the "Defense wins championships" idea, and on the face of it Ohio State has problems according to this philosophy.

Of course, no team loses 9 players and gets better. There will be some growing pains. Fortunately, Ohio State has the fire power this year to put some points on the board, so the D can be somewhat relaxed knowing that they don't have to pitch a shut-out for the team to be successful.

On the other hand, Ohio State's "quick strike" potential could have short term negative effect on the D, because if OSU scores in 2 minutes upon taking posession the D is going to wear out quickly. Long term, the expierence would bode well for OSU's D, but again, short term results could be disappointing for OSU faithful.

All that said, since Tressel has arrived, Ohio State - even in years where the D was "rebuilding" - has had a very stout defense. OSU lost quite a bit from the 02 team and the 03 D was still pretty darn good. The 04 team's problems wasn't D.. and 05 it was obviously the strength. I do not expect that this years D will be lights out, but having watched OSU closely (at least as much as a "non conneted fan" such as myself can) I think the D is going to be better than a lot of people think. I mean, Marcus Freeman, for example - assuming he wasn't injured last year - would have started had it not been for the NFL talent in front of him. James Laurianitis got 2 full games in last year.. that of course, doesn't sound like much, but consider that those two games were Michigan and the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Ame. (Notre Ame's D was missing for sure, but their offense was very good, and Laurianitis held his own) John Kerr was all big ten as a freshman at Indiana...

On the D-Line OSU has been using a system of rotating linemen some 8 deep for so long that the amount of returning starts doesn't really tell the story. They return pleanty of game expierence.

Malcom Jenkins is the next "great OSU Corner" following the "tradition" of Shawn Springs, Antoine Winfield, Ahmed Plummer, Nate Clements, Ashton Youboty. On the other side, there is no proven commodity, but there is much anticipation surrounding what Andre Amos can do (The last time he played CB - he redshirted last year - was in a HS all star game... Mario Manningham was dominating the 1st half, while Amos was playing WR... They moved Amos to CB in the 2nd half, and MM was shut down all but completely. (If memory serves he had 1 catch for like 8 yards against Amos)) Of course, 1 game does not a career make... but, like I said, aniticpation is high for him. At Safety, Ohio State loses a great deal in Donte Whitner being gone. In fact, I think thats going to hurt them more than the loss of Hawk, Carpenter and Schlegal. As great as that trio is, Whitner was one of those guys who simply did not make mistakes. Anyway, Glenville product Jamario O'Neil stands to make a name for himself (Like Whitner and Ginn before him, Jam-O was the #1 DB recruit in his class)

Anyway... the corps is lacking in expierence perhaps (and that fact is important) but not talent... and such is the nature of college football.

If OSU's O wasn't anticipated to move the ball at relative will, I would have much larger concerns about the D, but since OSU should be able to win shoot-outs, the D will be afforded some time to jell.

I think pound for pound, the D this year will be faster than last year's squad... but better? I doubt it. Faster isn't always better.. over pursuit is met quite nicely with misdirection.

Well good for you then... I got in to an argument on here last year about BGSU competing with "the big boys" of college football, and as I recall the concensus was that BG is too close to Toledo and being between Ann Arbor and C-bus doesn't help, bla bla bla..

But, that the fans are taking umberage to "Ohio State's dominance" in the region should be telling your administration to start investing in BG football because people are ready to support it.

Actually, discussing tOSU this year on the football board is completely appropriate, given the fact that they are an opponent.

That, said, the total insipidness of this thread, excepting the love for Grant and his wonderfule website, warrants its deletion.
