As though I needed another reason to dislike the Steelers.
They give him 3 freaking plays?! One pass attempt.
If he's not the 3rd-string QB on the Steelers' roster, I can't see him staying on the Steelers practice roster. You would think that at least one of the other 31 teams would sign him to be their 3rd-string QB this year. If not, it would mean that his stock would have fallen even further since the draft. After all, how many QB's have been drafted 5th round or higher and been cut before the regular season started over the past 10 or 20 years?
Can you imagine Omar not being on an NFL roster this year, when he could have just stayed for his 5th year here? The thought makes me ill.

This is a really sad game/day for Omar. In hindsight I think he should have stayed at Bowling Green for his senior year.
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

No offense, but it really pisses me off when people say this (Announcers, Steeler fans, BG fans, etc.)
What does staying in our offense for another year do to prepare him for the NFL? He still wouldn't develop mentally because we take away half the field most of the time and read the defenses and call the audibles for him. He's not going to get better at moving the team in and out of the huddle, or at his dropback mechanics since he has to do neither on a regular basis here. His throwing motion would still be the same. The QB class coming out next year is dynamite -- worlds ahead of this year's.
There was absolutely zero benefit for Omar in terms of NFL readiness for him to stay here for his Senior year. Sure, we'd all be a hell of a lot happier and secure in this team's abilities, but Omar would gain nothing for the future.
Didn't mean to rant, but I'm really friggin' tired of hearing people say this.
Our offense is not built to put players into the NFL. Period. And that's fine with me. It puts plenty of points on the board at the MAC level, and is enough to give us a chance in games with the big boys.

Staying here would have helped only if the coaches were willing to make some changes to the offense. The shotgun spread does not prepare a QB for the NFL. I am by no means criticizing Brandon or Studrawa because the offense has won alot of games for BGSU and that is what they were hired to do.
It may have played a hand in QB Sean Hakes' decision to go to Akron over BG. The kid was basically sold on coming here until he went to Akron on a visit and heard Brookheart's spiel about Frye starting for the Clowns and his expereince coaching under Shanahan. Omar's difficulties grasping the nuances of the NFL styled sets and the footwork may hamper our recruiting efforts if we don't introduce more variety to the offense. The addition of a FB to the depth chart looks like a good start. I'd love to see us introduce some 2TE formations with a FB and I'd be overjoyed beyond comprehension if we started lining up our QB under cneter more frequently.
You need to keep things fresh or the smarter defensive coaches will find a way to stop you.

J4H, I think you totally missed the boat entirely on my post. Another year in our offense does him absolutely no good for the NFL. But you know what? It sure as heck helps BG out!!!! Certainly Barnes doesnt seem like even a comptent passer, and I know lots of people have already seen enough of Turner throwing the ball so much so that they would want to see Glaud or Sheenan play. The ONLY reason I wish that Omar would have stayed another year at BG, is so that we would have one of the best QB's in the nation returning for all of our games this season. I dont care about the NFL. Its not as good as college football and never will be. I wish he would have done better and I wish it would have suited him better, but I'll take his 41-4 for 4,000 season at BG, over a solid career in the NFL anyday.

I didn't miss anything. In fact, I even said it would be better for BG. This is a thread about Omar in the NFL. your post said "In hindsight". That means you have changed your opinion based on recent events (Omar struggling in camp). That tells me we're still talking about the NFL. I'm pretty sure everyone here has always thought that Omar staying for one more year would be better for BG. How could it not be? That's never been the issue.

Well it certainly couldnt have hurt to stay one more year. The reference to hindsight was that I thought he could make it as a #3 QB in the NFL. As in yeah its probably better than he leaves BG to go start developing as a true NFL style QB, because BG doesnt run that type of offense. Now that I've seen him play I realize that year didnt make any difference and would rather him stayed at BG.

If Omar was still here, instead of predicting 8-4 and a loss in the MAC Championship game, It would be more like 10-2 and a MAC title.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:BGSUFootballFan wrote: Now that I've seen him play I realize that year didnt make any difference and would rather him stayed at BG.
Wouldn't we all![]()
How different would everyone's outlook be on this year with Omar still around? I say +2 wins and infinitely more attention for the program.

Yes for sure. Maybe even Heisman talk as well, with no true favorites this year other than maybe Quinn and Peterson!

I said it the day the season was over. I said it the day he decided to make himself available. And I'm on the same message.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:BGSUFootballFan wrote:This is a really sad game/day for Omar. In hindsight I think he should have stayed at Bowling Green for his senior year.

I'm not sure if he would have learned a whole lot more -- but I do think he had an opportunity to play himself above the fifth round. It would have meant more money and it would have made teams give him a closer look with that additional investment in him.
He made himself available at a low point. I have a hard time believing he could have played himself lower than the fifth round this season.
Anyway: I watched that whole damned game last night hoping for a look at Omar, and he only got three plays.
He handed off on first down and connected a decent nine yard pass on second down. Unfortunately, he seemed to have happy feet.
The third down play that spawned the fumble seemed blown up. Omar isn't that quick, and I question why anyone would call for him to run toward the left end, as he was doing. Did he botch a hand off, or what?
