I know that this won't be popular, but staying at BG for another year might have done him good in the NFL. First of all, the top round candidates get a lot more attention in mini-camps, preseason, etc. They also get a lot more patience when things don't go well for them. What does staying in our offense for another year do to prepare him for the NFL?
I think his shoulder injury, while insignificant in the grand scheme of things, took him out of the spotlight while BG slipped though the cracks. When that happened, and I hate to say it, BG took Omar with them. If that had not happened, Omar would likely have gone sooner in the draft. Had he gone sooner in the draft, I think he would be getting a lot more attention from the team that drafted him. Economics plays into this heavily. When teams invest more money, and more valuable draft picks, on players, they don't write them off because they struggle for their rookie year...and they don't bench them because of one mistake.
Furthermore, he did have skills to refine when he left the college scene. The former principal at my school used to be an assistant football coach at Western Michigan. His comment was that Omar could still use another year of college to develop, and I agree. Keep in mind, he played less than two seasons at BG, and there were times when our offense spuddered...they are just overshadowed by a mountain of touchdowns.
I have to admit, this whole situation sucks. I'm not sure what to say about it, but I still have hopes that things will work out for Omar. At this point, I think it unlikely that it will happen at Pittsburgh, even if they do keep him on the roster. If they do cut him, I hope they get screwed.....and I don't think it is a stretch to think they might. Big Ben has missed a few games here and there, and we all know how injury-prone Batch is....So, I hope they do get stuck with with Boyd if they cut Omar. It would serve them right.
I just hope that Omar finds himself with a team that will do what it takes to develop his skills.
Go Falcons!
