2006-07 SCHEDULE
What were people expecting?? Duke, North Carolina, Cincinnati, Nova?? It is a well known fact that no one likes to come to Anderson and play. Just ask Michigan State and Michigan. They hate the atmosphere and our home record over the years. Why would they want to come here and risk losing to what most perceive as a lousy team (this is according to various posters on this board)? I think based on the factors of our home court and team, this is not a half bad OOC schedule. Heck, we actually have teams willing to come here and play us AND they are Division I - what everyone has been crying about for years. This is not a schedule of a coach trying to save a job. This is a schedule of a coach who has really never been able to get anyone to come to BG and play because of our atmosphere and history.

I agree with BGSU33, Warthog and BGorDeath.
There's several D-I home games, including arguably the hottest mid-major in the country in South Alabama. Overscheduling the non-conference slate simply for the sake of having some token "name" teams on the schedule would impede the development of the new players and is not what this program needs at its current stage.
The games that matter anyway are the MAC games. That is where Dakich will be measured and evaluated, and that is where the emphasis of the season should be.

BG because Miami is full of pricks. Anyway, there are other factors in recruiting, other than schedules. How about the educational aspect of the school or, perhaps, its location to a major interstate that allows easy access for parents and other relatives to come to games. Some recruits won't go to a school because they are playing an ACC team at home.MatelaAntwerp wrote:You are a potential recruit.
Compare our schedules to Miamis....where do you go?

Recruiting is not an issue with Dakich. It's the other r word: retention.
We sign talented players. Miami signs talented players. I highly, highly doubt an kid will pick a school singularly based on a non-conference schedule a school plays in a given year. "You know, Dad, it's really close between BG and Miami, but Miami might play Rutgers and Bradley this year, plus Florida A&M at home! Plus a couple road games where the announcers will refer to us as the Metro-Atlantic conference and we'll lose by 35!"
Plus, I'd rather develop the current players and run the risk of losing a shortsighted recruit or two any day.

If you discount the fact that our coach is a lame duck, then yes I can see where this is a decent schedule. We've got D1 teams and we've got some at home. Unfortunately most of these are the very bottom of the bottom of D1. What happened to at least one game against a decent opponent (VaTech, Seton Hall, etc) the last few years. I miss the Detroit series. What the heck is up with playing one OOC opponent twice in one year!?Warthog wrote:I'm gonna have to agree with BGSU33. I am trying to discount the fact that Dakich is in the last year of his contract. We are young, playing lots of Div IA teams, and playing them at home. Trying to look at the bright side, I really think this is a good schedule to help our team establish themselves in the pre-conference portion.
I just have a real hard time discounting the fact that our coach is entering his lame duck year. Was this schedule made for the purpose of getting our team ready for the conference schedule, or for building a resumé? I guess I'll have to give Dan some credit and say that it was the former, but I cannot help but feel it is probably a good deal of the latter.
We'll see where this team stacks up pretty quick, because there is no reason why we should not win a large majority of these OOC games.

Miami.....Five home games against D-I schools including Michigan, and games against Illinois and Cincinnati on neutral courts, and games at Kentucky and Xavier.
It will not be the only component in deciding where to go to school. But that schedule is light years ahead of ours. Light years. They will probably be on TV alot too.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see the BG and Miami recruiting results to see if Miami's magical mystery 2006 non-conference tour has any discernable impact whatsoever.
Also, while the Illinois and UC games aren't on campus sites, I hardly consider the Sears Center in Chicago a "neutral" environment against Illinois and the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati a "neutral" environment to play Cincinnati. They are setting themselves up to be road kill. All the power to them, but I like our schedule for our present situation this year much, much better.
Their press release mentioned nothing about television, and I can't see TV executives clamoring to include any of these matchups.

I believe the Sentinel reported yesterday that this happened because both teams wanted/needed another home game late in the schedule making process.hammb wrote: What the heck is up with playing one OOC opponent twice in one year!?

Also weren't we suppose to play at IPFW this year, cause that game was suppose to be last year and moved to this year. Also was wondering why Oakland wasn't on the schedule

If you are a Division I head coach with an Internet connection and Gametracker, how in the hell does coming to Anderson Arena in the what last 4 years scare anyone? And teams should be lining up on Wooster to play our Jekyl and Hyde road show.
I don't buy Dakich's perceived scheduling problems at all. Just another paranoid attempt to make our team "seem" better than what it actually is.
If it smells like crap and looks like crap, then chances are that's what it is and welcome to our 2006-07 schedule.
