The Metro-Atlantic Conference (MAC)

Post by JoeFalcon »

That's our home according to a story about Temple football for a paper in New Jersey.

That's gotta be a new one.

You'd think, that reporter's ignorance aside, looking at what schools are in the MAC, "Metro-Atlantic" wouldn't make any sense. It's hard to classify anywhere in Michigan or Ohio as either Metro or Atlantic. This clown must have gotten us confused with the actual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, (MAAC) which is in the northeast.

Here's how the writer responded to me...

I worte MAC and my desk felt it needed to be written out. Yes, it was a mistake that in the end is my fault and for that I apologize.

He also incorrectly stated Temple was joining the MAC this year. I'm pretty sure Temple is becoming a member in '07.

Newspapers don't have fact checkers.

Seriously.

At a paper that size, stories usually get read by two other people before they make it into the paper. The first will give it an aggressive edit. Then it goes to a copy editor who is a little more pressed for time -- because this person also lays out pages -- but will read it and raise a red flag if he or she sees a problem.

If there is a question about whether something is correct, they will go back to the reporter, whose job it will be to find out more.

Out east, when people hear "mack" in a college sports discussion, they think "Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference" (MAAC).
