I'm glad Lewis played a great game as well. He really stepped up when Smith went down with the injury, although Lewis was already our #2 CB and did start the game. So its not like he "came off the bench", but a great performance nonetheless!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

There were some things I really liked...they were other things that need lots of work. For the love of Doyt Perry, anyone going to the Gregg Brandon show tomorrow night DEMAND something be done about that freakin punt formation!!!! That cost us 2 TD's.
Wisky is a good team...they'll win 8 or 9 games this year and I was encouraged by our ability to move the ball on them. They have 8 starters back this year. FB was impressive. He MUST be on the field somewhere.
Defensively, a decent night. Yes, there are still problems with the tackling that need addressed but I thought our guys were flying around for the most part. Not having White was a big loss...we needed his leadership. It was great to see Briggs get some PT and Mahone is gonna be a good one.
On to Buffalo...
GO FALCONS!!

They tried the STUPID punt formation last year and GB won't give it up! If you watched Rojas punt in warmups and at halftime, he was consistantly hitting them 60 yds. and turning it over nicely with great hang time.
NO MORE GIMMICKS on the punt team! Just block'em and let the kid kick! He was under so much pressure.......and that's not what we wanted him to experience in his first game.

My thoughts on the game are as follows:
I loved the new offense. Gregg Brandon did not disappoint me, the guy is still a genius on that side of the ball, IMO. This scheme was completely different than what we ran with Omar, and fit the skillset of our current group of players better. We held a banner up to Wisconsin saying that we had no confidence in our passing game and we still chugged out 200+ yards on the ground. I like that very much.
The front 7 looked much more athletic to me than last year. They were in positions to make plays quite a bit more than I remember last year. Unfortunately we still have no concept how to tackle. This staff has again overlooked the fundamentals (Special Teams & Tackling). It is ridiculous that we still are watching this after what we all saw to be the glaring weakness last year. We were playing a Big10 team, and I could give a pass on the poor tackling by saying we were out talented, but that is NOT the problem. Our guys aren't failing to wrap up as much as they're not TRYING to wrap up. They constantly go in duck their head and put their shoulders into a guy without even so much as an attempt to wrap up the ball carrier. I am absolutely astounded that this was our obvious weakness this year and we have made no effort to correct it. I'm just baffled by this.
The secondary looked very weak last night as well. I didn't notice that Smith went out, that could've been costly, but overall there were wide open guys almost every time Stocco dropped back to pass. The pass rush wasn't nearly good enough to overcome that either. The only pass rusher that I thought did anything was Parks, which is interesting considering he was matched up with UW's best OL.
On offense the OL looked pretty good and Barnes did a phenomenal job rushing the ball. I was disappointed in Macon, but I think he'll still be okay in the long run. He's got too much explosiveness not to. Barnes does appear to have better RB instincts than Macon right now.
The team looked better on the whole than I expected, but I was REALLY disappointed by the way we played in the aspects that I wanted to see improvement on. I said going in that this year was not about wins and losses, and I don't take solace in a close game either. Yes, the team was more competitive than I expected, but I really didn't see much improvements in the areas that were our biggest weakness. We will never become an elite team until we can teach our players the proper way to tackle. Like I said it is very discouraging how it's not just a failure to do it properly as much as it is a failure to even attempt a proper tackle...very disappointing
I do think that this offense will be able to run all over most MAC teams, with pretty good ease. After seeing that performance, along with the rest of the MAC, I think I'm raising my expectations a little. This team has a dominant OL and enough skill in the backfield to run their way to the MAC title game if they get some defense.

I don't know if "timid", "hesitant" or something else is the right word, but Macon seemed a little off. Even on the reverse it seemed like he waited for the perfect opportunity or a bigger hole to open up and it killed his momentum.
I had to do a double-take when they posted midway through the 4th Q that we had 194 yards rushing.

I know the secondary is young but boy were they awful last night! It was just basic things they were doing pretty horribly. Granted that is big 10 competition so maybe once they get into the mac schedule they will be alright but it was frustrating.
And also, WRAP UP fellas. I was frustraded beyond belief at the poor tackling in the first half. They were trying to tack down that beast of a RB wisky had by throwing shoulder at him. if they did happen to wrap they wrap him up around the shoulder pads and went along for the ride.
I've said this plenty of times in the other thread but...QUIT THE STUPID PUNT FORMATION!! there is ZERO benefit from this. No one gets downfield quicker it isn't more effective blocking, and the punter gets rushed. I would had to be the poor three guys protecting the punter. The guys up front punch, release and wish those poor souls behind them good freaking luck!!!
That forrmation is like modern art. It may look pretty to a select few but it actually SUCKS.
But im not goign to get too bent out of shape over it(except the punt formation), it's early. Im looking forward to going to the first game at the doyt next week.
