another women's sport

Post by Dr. Reality »

According to the Blade this morning, the new Athletic director is talking about bringing still another women's sport to the scene. That would produce a 13 to 6 ratio of women's sports to men's. Somehow that really bugs me, and I hope I'm not alone. I've asked this question before, and I need to ask it again --- if the mega schools and the Div IAA and Div II schools can sustain a full slate of men's sports, why can't the Mid Am schools? It makes no sense. And there are so few "conventional" women's sports left that they mentioned field hockey has a possibility. God Forbid! There are only about 30 high schools in the state of Ohio (only two in NW Ohio) that play that sport -- mostly prepschools. And if they're thinking of revenue, forget it; only parents and boyfriends watch field hockey.

Am I missing something, are you talking about actually teams in your ratio. BG has 10 womens teams and 7 mens, so its not as bad as you say.

Who ever lets facts get in the way of their argument? It sounds better to say we have 2 womens sports for every male sport.

How do you know the addition of another Women's sport wouldn't also have a Men's sport added later? I always thought Wrestling would be a good, small sport for us.

If you count scholarships, I imagine our department still favors men.

men's sports

I only know of six men's sports at BG: football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer and cross-country. Is there a 7th sport that I'm missing???

Perhaps he is alluding to adding varsity women's ice hockey. There would be no need for facility money, since we have it. And hockey is a sport with a lot of tradition and a large following in the area. I see absolutly nothing wrong with adding another sport, as long as the budget can be maintained. I am sure this will be studied very carefully before a decision is made.

I would think the "Ice Arena Feasibility Study" (I use " " because anytime I hear the University say that anymore I roll my eyes) would help determine the possibility of the women getting their own program.

This is true. I also want to point out that it was Maureen that mentioned Field Hockey, not the AD. It was nothing more than a point of information that Women's Field Hockey is the only Women's MAC sport BG does not have.

I think that this would be a great thing for the University, and I would be among the first to support varsity lady icers!

The feasability study on the ice arena is in and the money figure I heard is $6-12 million. Do we want to add another sheet of ice or not?

Did you know that in two weeks Doyt Perry Stadium will be 40 years old? In the last 40 years, no other facility has been built on this campus for the sole purpose of Intercollegiate Athletics (according to JD Campbell in our meeting this morning).

That is with the exception of the SEBO Center I hope. This is another marketing opportunity lost. There should be a party, a celebration of stadium history, remembering the man that stadium is named for, a perfect time to begin a capitol campaign for a total renovation. All of these should be happening this season. There are some students, comunity members, and even alumni who do not adhear themselves to BG athletics because they are unaware of the tradition we have here. Making them aware of this tradition and emersing (sp?) them in it is an excellent first step. It's too bad those with the power to do something do not feel the same way... :(

That is correct - until the Sebo Center was constructed.

That is the figure I heard as well....and to answer your question: HELL, YES WE WANT TO ADD ANOTHER SHEET OF ICE!!!.

Getting new boards and glass is probably the start of many other updates we might see in the old barn!!

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
