Well.

It's not for me to say what anyone else should do with their money. Good for him for being charitable.

However, as a former FMBer who has both:

A- seen the OSUMB's spacious state-of-the-art audio-visual room in their own customized suite, and

B- craned her neck to watch videos of FMB performances on the living-room-sized TV wheeled in on a cart to a band room with a capacity for about 175 people (not 240), which is also shared with every other instrumental ensemble in the music college...... *deep breath after all that*

I can't help but be a tad bitter. And envious, yes. :?

well, good for them. At least people are recognizing that bands are important. I am surprised, though that OSU doesn't have enough money. But, what do I know...

That $100 million is for athletics...Silly. Of course they don't have enough money to take the band out of their own pockets.

I agree with Ohiogal, but the fact remains...why OSU?!?!?! They could easily have given the money to BG or UW. I know our band and I'm sure that UW would gladly have taken that money.

Quoting the Columbus Dispatch:
"At the stadium, not only does each band member take a seat; a sousaphone or drum set might occupy one as well, making a sizable dent in the 4,000 seats that Ohio State has been allotted at Texas’ Royal-Memorial Stadium."
---------------------------------------

ok, first off...since when does Ohio State use drum sets? I know most bands have stands so their percussionists dont kill their backs all day, but drum sets? and what stadium has a seat that could even accomodate a drum set?

secondly, earlier in the article, it states that the band (OSU) is taking 250 members. Now rewind to the above quote....so at most, the band takes up maybe closer to 275-280 seats taking into consideration people setting down sousaphones and the aformentioned stands for percussion...i mean, drum sets.

my point?

let's say that the OSUMB does take up 280 seats. The university (Ohio State) has been allotted 4000. That's a whopping 7% (yes, I'm a perc and I did the math). And as we all know, 7% is a huge amount*....because OSU fans would never want to buy their tickets through the host university.

but hey...that's just me. and if i'm wrong, i'm wrong and I'll admit it....but that's just my take on both OSU being whiney and the Dispatch for being dumb.

I don't understand how Alums can give money to other Universities. In a sense all that happens when you do that is you make your degree have less value. The more money you give your own school the better the school is and the better your degree looks. BTW, has anyone seen the house accross from Quarters with the GIANT OSU flag roped to the top floor?? Sticks in my f-ing craw!

I did not receive my undergraduate degree from BGSU and yet I donate to BG but not my undergraduate school- depends where your loyalties lie and how you were treated there. When I donate to my undergraduate school it will be marked for campus radio and the men's soccer team.

Yes, I saw the large red flag with a grey zero on it near quarters and also felt it was bogus.

The above statement seems a bit shortsighted. I earned both a BS and PhD from BG. And yes I donate back to BG, but at the same time I would fully consider it an investment to donate to UK or any other university for that matter. Especially if either my daughter or son attended a school other than BG (shudder the thought). It's an investment in the next generations' education system. As for donating to athletic programs and for the opportunity for a band to play at Texas, well that might be a little different and I can understand your sentiment a little more in this case.

Count me among those that have given to another college that I did not graduate from. I worked at Methodist College in Fayetteville, NC and have donated a life insurance policy to that insitution. I was one of the charter members of their endowment society. I also donate some money to Central Michigan University (where I am doing masters work), but no where close to the amount I donate to BGSU.

Its perfectly reasonable to give money to a place where your masters is earned. Who knows, maybe whoever it was actually was involved with OSU somehow. I still don't see the point in ivesting in a university you're not connected to.

Random thought: was it just me or did it seem like they showed OSU's band more than Texas's? I didn't see the whole game due to ours lasting a long time and falling asleep during the 4th quarter (I was tired). But anytime a band is on TV, it's a good thing!
