They absolutely can be fixed, and they absolutely should have been by now. I watched 30 other D1 football teams cover kicks and punt the ball today. I've seen almost every team in D1-A cover kicks and punt the ball over the last two years.
We're the worst. And it ain't close. And this team is in the top half of the country in terms of athletes and talent IMO.
Once again, when there is not a big physical gap between two teams, Special teams are coaching. I'm sure there are a ton of other football teams in the country that have freshman and sophomores covering kicks and blocking for punts. They're not having these problems. Rookies play on special teams all the time in the NFL. Coach 'em up and put 'em out there. We just aren't coaching them up. We are physically superior to Buffalo, and by a good margin. If coaching were equal, we should've had a definite edge on special teams today.
And I don't think Turner Gill is that great of a coach.

Don't know about that, but the key is 'at times'. It can work when you throw out there and the defense is worried about a fake so they play a more straight up defense and don't rush. But we have made a mockery of the formation. The opponent just lines 10 guys up on the line and goes after the ball. And this is even after we executed a successful fake out of this formation last week. Our opponents have seen it enough to know how to attack us. It's that simple.Schadenfreude wrote:Wasn't Notre Dame using it at times last season?Warthog wrote: There are so many holes in the execution of that formation that I can't figure out how a Div IA coach continues to think it is a good idea.
We aren't alone in this. Right?

I said to my dad today as we were lining up in that damed formation that Buffalo was bringing everybody. Hell, I'm surprised they didn't rush the return man with the kind of blitz they had going on our f**king punt formation! Even when we lined up in a normal formation ONCE they brought everyone and all of our players, not being used to a NORMAL formation, stayed home on their blocks and the Buffs got a damed 60 yard return!
Och. I'm so angry...still...at 1:55 AM that I could spit nails and kill a sasquatch. I don't know how anyone in their right mind on this board is simply happy with a win. Everyone should be up in arms after this game demanding some significant change. And I'm all about being respectful of all athletes that put on a uniform and fight for their school, but we did this tonight against FREAKIN' BUFFALO!!!! If they had won this game tonight it would have been only their SECOND WIN AGAINST A MAC TEAM SINCE THEY JOINED THE CONFERENCE. UnFALCONbelievable.

That's the whole point. We can't execute this formation. Yet, we keep flogging it. Of course, we went to the tight protect, and they got a big return.Schadenfreude wrote:Wasn't Notre Dame using it at times last season?Warthog wrote: There are so many holes in the execution of that formation that I can't figure out how a Div IA coach continues to think it is a good idea.

You shouldn't get more than one punt blocked a season. We should be able to hold teams at least to something around the MAC average for punt returns.

From Maureen's article in the Blade today:

"We made every kicking gaffe in football," Brandon said. "We've got to watch the film, and look at the personnel, and just evaluate where we are. We'll find the answer, it's out there somewhere."

You know its bad when your starting QB says this after a triple overtime home win against Buffalo "This game sets the tone for the rest of the season." Thanks AT, good to know we are going to go 4-8.
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!
How does it NOT set the tone for the rest of the season?BGSUFootballFan wrote:You know its bad when your starting QB says this after a triple overtime home win against Buffalo "This game sets the tone for the rest of the season." Thanks AT, good to know we are going to go 4-8.
Yesterday proved there are no gimmies on the schedule, not even Temple. It also showed that this team can play pretty crappy for the greater part of 60 minutes, but when it came down to making plays, they were able to do so. There weren't many positives to take from those five hours, but there are a few out there that can really affect how the team comes out the rest of the year.

I agree that it DOES set the tone. My point is how is that tone good after taking Flufflao to triple OT? IF we would have came out and dominated them in all aspects of the game and won 49-7, and AT makes the same comment then I would say yeah right on man. But I dont see how anyone considers a triple OT win to UB as a POSITIVE tone setter for the rest of the season...

Ask Toledo and Northern Illinois about if they would be happy with a win this afternoon. So what ....the game was closer than it should have been and we did suck on special teams. We got a win and the Rockets and Huskies did not...we were all 3 favored heavily(Toledo -10 1/2 and North Illionis -19) take the win and move on We are 1-0 in conference.

Point taken, but I'm really tired of this attitude. This attitude, which the coaches share, is what has kept this program from advancing over the past coupe season. Brandon seems to think that, since we win, he must be doing a good job -- so why change? Nobody seems to take into account that most of our wins have come against the bottom 10-20% of D1A.
I take no solace in beating Buffalo. This season is about how we win or lose, and yesterday was just plain bad.

Dont forget about our scare with Ball St. Last year the only game we won handedly was Temple. This year even that may not happen, seeing how they dang near beat Buffalo and we all know how we did against Buffalo. I agree with J4H in that winning isnt everything. When you are huge favorites and you barely win that doesnt mean you did everything right and there is no need for complaining or changing something. Same goes for losing. Just because you lose doesnt mean you need to completely re-tool the offense and start redesigning everything. Its HOW you win and HOW you lose, that decided WHAT you need to practice and change and Brandon doesnt seem to care about that.

Does anybody know if Rojas can pass decently? I've got a pretty good idea, and perhaps the coaches have thought of this already.
If I were the coach and the opposition was bringing 10 people at me on every punt on my spread formation, I would have the punter just toss a lob pass to one of the wide-out gunners. A completed pass to the gunner makes it 1-on-1 with the return man, and that's a good match-up. My high school coach had a saying: "One-on-one equals none." That means that if it's one-on-one, there should be no excuse to not get by the guy, especially since this return man is probably a receiver or running back and doesn't practice tackling drills on a daily basis.
I, too, hate this punt formation, but I see the good in it. Granted, we got a punt blocked against Buffalo, but perhaps they aren't worrying about that because they figured we'd beat Buffalo anyways. Maybe they're saving this type of fake for a big opponent like OSU/Toledo/OU/etc.
