I got a call from my buddy in BG at 1:30 this mornign telling me who it was. I almost lost it. What the crap did they think they were doing? Have we learned nothing from the University of Vermont and their poor choices?
On the other hand, what the info I personally have, which isnt much, i havent even seen the picture nor do I have any detaila s to whats written on him besides "racial slurs" which is quite vauge. But I would almost have to say that they were more than likley drunk. if the naked guy was unconcious, odds are he was passed out from alcohol. Im doubting they would Knock his arse out physically. If this is true, there may be a chance that they will play again. Alcohol seems to be a suspension of a few games in college. But with the added photo, and the writting, and nakedness... Im sure it will be a larger than normal punishment if it was jsut drunken chicanery.

This is disgusting.
I was just discussing the CCHA hockey season with an OSU fan yesterday. I was stating how we could wind up in the middle of the pack this year.
I don't see that happening with 7 players suspended "indefinitely". I say permanently if guilty.
This is the same type of incident that sank the Kent program TWICE!

Photo leads to suspension of 7 Bowling Green players
By JOHN WAGNER

BOWLING GREEN - Seven Bowling Green State University hockey players were suspended yesterday for their roles in a racially insensitive incident that was captured in a photograph.
The suspended players are Ryan Barnett, Steve Brudzewski, Bryan Dobek, Mike Falk, Don Morrison, Brett Pilkington and Alex Rogosheske.
All seven are suspended indefinitely, said BG hockey coach Scott Paluch; they did not practice yesterday, and Paluch said the players' status for this weekend's games against Lake Superior State has not been determined.
On Monday the Sentinel-Tribune newspaper in Bowling Green received a photograph in the mail from an unknown sender. The photo, taken in April 2003, shows eight males, five of whom were identified as members of this year's team. The identities of the other three people in the photo are not known.
The reason the two players not in the photo were suspended is not known.
One Bowling Green player is shown, face down and naked, with a profanity and racial slurs written on his body in colored marker, according to the newspaper.
Paluch said he did not know if more disciplinary action would be taken, citing the on-going nature of the investigation.
"We're continuing to investigate, looking into all the facts and gathering information," Paluch said.
BG athletic director Paul Krebs said the details behind the photo, including where it was taken and who sent it to the newspaper, still are not known.
"We're still trying to ascertain all the facts," Krebs said. "I don't know that that is important right now; what's important is our values and what we stand for as a hockey team, athletic department and university, and trying to protect our program and our university."
Krebs said the suspended players also may face disciplinary action from the university.
"Any violation of the student judicial code means that is a possibility," Krebs said. "There is still fact-finding going on, but the folks in Student Judicial Affairs are aware of the situation, and we have been working with them this afternoon."
No Bowling Green players were made available for comment.
Six of the suspended players are forwards; Morrison plays defense. Brudzewski and Rogosheske are seniors and the rest are juniors. Five of the seven played in both games of BG's season-opening series at Union College; Dobek played in one game and Barnett did not see action.
Falk had a goal in the series, and Morrison and Pilkington had assists as Bowling Green won both games for the program's first 2-0 start since the 1996-97 season.
The seven suspensions leave the Falcons with only 20 players on the active roster. Three of those players are goalies, meaning BG is one skater short of the 18 allowed to dress for a game.
"We were pleased with the practice we had today with the guys we have," Paluch said. "We're upbeat, and we're ready for Lake Superior."
BG plays host to the Lakers at the BG Ice Arena Friday at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday at 2:35 p.m.

I agree...If Scott and Krebs decide to kick these guys off the team, I completely support it. As much as I love this program/team, this is just unacceptable. There is no way I ever want to see our University and this program be embarrassed. I am sad to say that this will set the rebuilding efforts back considerably. A great opportunity for our FROSH to increase their ice time and make an impression.
Very sad day in BGSU hockey history........
I hope we can at least gain a split this weekend now....
Go out and support the guys who still wear the Orange and Brown sweaters. They are the ones who respect this program and their coach.

Falcon Hockey...Re-building the tradition!
I don't follow the hockey program much more than to know that we have stunk it up for about the last ten years but things looked more promising this season. So I don't have any idea about the quality of the players that have been suspended. I would just like to comment on the application of the punishment.
If you recall, earlier this fall, several football players at UT appartently went to a party with the sole intention of beating up some people. Several non-players were injuerd and are still recovering from the incident. So how did the University of Toledo respond? They did nothing until receiving a report from the police several days later. And who was suspended? Two players, a third stringer and a fourth stringer, despite what appeared to be much evidence that there were many more players involved than just these two.
Compare that with how we have dealt with a notorious incident. Immediate suspension of all involved. I am much more in favor of what we have done compared to UT. We are not going to let our student-athletes get away with doing stupid things. If you act stupid, there is a price to pay and I think that is the message that has been sent.
While I am sad to see the hockey program in the news for this reason, I am proud of how the coach has stepped in and taken immediate action rather than a wait-and-see so we can just suspend some players that aren't critical to our success.

I'm glad that Pooch took a stand and suspended the players involved.

I want to know why they may get a punishment from the university? Stuff like this is not allowed when on a team like that, but where does it say stuff about this for the general university? Im pretty sure that If i go out to party with some friends, and we get trashed, and someone ends up naked and written on. And a picture ends up at the sentinel, I can't get kicked out of school. Maybe if they are there representing BGSU, I can see this. But it seems this is gettign quite out of hand to me, we dont even know what the context of the event is, and there are threats of absured amounts of punishment going around.

After supporting this program as a season ticket holder for 28 seasons, I had to take a step back and get a good night's sleep before responding to this incident! I don't think I've ever been as embarrassed by anything that's happened in this program before. I seriously didn't know if I should vomit or cry.
First, I want to commend Pooch for stepping up and doing the right thing. Taking immediate action is the ONLY answer. Pooch and his staff are class individuals and men that I KNEW would handle this in an appropriate way. I thank them for taking such an action.
Secondly, I'm not naive, and I know that things like this happen across the nation in various colleges, but I never thought that this program would be caught up in a scandal like this. I believe these boys (and yes, they have acted like BOYS, not Young Men) owe everyone involved an apology. They owe their coach, their teammates, the university, the alumnae and the fan base as a whole an apology!
Third, there are a few boys on the list of suspended players that from all I've heard just flat out shocked me. That being said, there are a few players on that list who have been suspended previously for Alcohol related events. If this is indeed an alcohol related event (and honestly, an unconscious person lends someone to believe that) then I think some of these boys have a more serious problem than just posing for a picture. I seriously have to wonder if they are in the right type of environment to lead a successful college career and life in general.
Fourth, I have probably as much anger at this point for the Gutless Coward who sent the picture to the Sentinel Office. While in ABSOLUTELY NO WAY condoning this event, I wonder about the motivation of someone who didn't take this directly to the coaching staff. They obviously felt it necessary to embarrass the University, Athletic Department and the Program. I don't believe that this was sent in out of "concern" for anyone, but rather in a vicious attempt to "get back" at the program or an individual in the program. I hope that whoever sent this picture steps forward and identifies themselves and explains their actions. If they are lurking here...know that you are a GUTLESS COWARD! Put a return address on the envelope, don't hide behind a city and country on the postmark. Are you a jilted girlfriend? A jilted recruit? An angry parent? Show yourself!
Lastly, as angry as I am at a certain group of boys on this team, I will be sitting in my seats, as I am every weekend cheering loudly for 2 Falcon victories! The players that remain and the coaching staff deserve that! They have worked hard to try to get back to the top of the CCHA standings...something many of us have waited a DECADE to see happen. Given the performance of the underclassmen last weekend, I feel that they will step up and we all know that Siggy will be back there doing his best to keep pucks out of the net. PLEASE Show up and give this team your support. The guys that are NOT involved in an incident as disgusting as this, DO NOT deserved to be punished by lack of attendence. The game on Saturday is at 2:35pm, what a perfect way to kill time before a football game?

Unless they're checking to see if this could have taken place on University property... that's one of the possibilites they would have a case against...if it happened in a dorm or something.BGSUfanatUT wrote:I want to know why they may get a punishment from the university? We're jumping to conclusisions here, people. You're automatically condemning all who were there....guilt by association is wrong. Two players in the picture aren't even on the team anymore.....I seem to remember two players getting kicked off of the team that year. Same players? Who knows.
Once Paluch gets to the bottem of this I'm sure the team may be minus a couple of players, then again, maybe the instigators are already gone. Do we condemn all of them for just being there? He did the right thing by suspending all of them until all of the facts are known. I won't be surprised if some are cleared for this weekend....and I trust Scott would NOT clear them if he wasn't satisfied that their role in the incident was extremely minimal.

Well Said TheKa...I didn't know about this until 30 minutes ago when one of my OSU buds here emailed me the ESPN link. To say I am in shock is an understatment. Unbelievable. Unacceptable. I support Coach Paluch and the staff for doing what they needed to do. Warthog brought up a very good comparision with our friends to the north and their football team. This suspension needed to be dealt out IMMEDIATELY and then the details worked out to see what this is really all about. You folks that follow hockey more than myself? I am so sorry this has happened.
I will still be selling 50/50 tix at 3 hockey games this season as well as attending a couple more games cuz the players not involved DESERVE the support. And I will continue to support the program despite this incident.
We need to get all the facts before anything else. I trust Coach Paluch to do just that.

This happened last April and if you recall a few players sat out the exhibition games because of alcohol related problems last spring. It could have all happened on the same night for all I know. No matter what, dorm or not, I don't think they should get kicked off the team for this. Suspended for awhile yes, but not kicked off the team. Like Grant said, if this happened in a dorm then there could be a serious case against this. But I still see no reason for 7 people to get the boot. If they are suspended for the season, that would be fine. Sure they are supposed to represent this university and everything about it but "if" under the influence of alcohol, their minds probably weren't realizing what they were doing and it happens, it's college!
"To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the project manager, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be."
The shame of the matter is, this incident gives BGSU a "black eye." I'm not saying who was at fault and who is to blame, but it just goes to show, these are college kids and they are going to make mistakes and they will have to learn by them. So many times we laugh at troubles that happen at other schools, calling them idiots or what have you. But in the grand scheme of things, BG is no different. It's a cycle in college athletics, and unfortunately, it's our turn.
Remember in 1993 (I'm pretty sure that was the year) we had about as many football players suspended for the Navy game.
