Ohio State letter urges students not to set fires
Friday, September 15, 2006
Don’t set fires. Don’t encourage them, either, because they are unsafe and make everyone look bad.
Ohio State University spread that message yesterday in a letter being delivered by hand to students living in the University District and by e-mail to all undergraduates, spokesman Jim Lynch said last night.
"Last weekend, nearly 50 fires were set in the University District following the Texas football game," said the letter from Richard A. Hollingsworth, interim vice president for student affairs, and Vernon Baisden, assistant vice president for public safety.
"Many of those involved were not Ohio State students, but others were. ‘Were’ is the operative word — at this point, two OSU students have been suspended and other cases are under investigation."
Those who ignore the warning will face suspension and criminal prosecution, it said.
"You’ve worked hard to be admitted to a top ranked university, and the football team has worked hard to achieve success on the field. Let’s not allow a few intoxicated revelers to send our collective reputation up in smoke." To read the full letter, visit http://www.dispatch.com/news-story.php?story=212448

*** perfect example of what I am talking about***
There was no point to this but to bring up a negative thing about OSU.
This is what I am saying needs to stop.
If you want to talk about OSU negatively in the other schools forum then that is fine. But atleast give me the option to defend or state my opinion without getting personally attacked and I wont go too far and get personal in return.
That is all I am asking **refer to my post in the thread about banning me to see what I am talkin about**

Sorry Tek, but I see it differently.
When an institution of higher learning has to send a memo out to it's students that they should not burn couches....well, I think that's ridiculous.
When an institution THE caliber of THE Ohio State University has to send a letter out to it's students, then I find that to be even more ridiculous. Becuase according to you, OSU is absolutely the greatest thing on earth so I would think you would expect more of your fellow students (or should I say the people you will be attending graduate school with in less than one week thanks to that undergraduate degree that you no longer like to recognize but you needed so that you could be admitted to the graduate program).
I sure hope that we would not have to put a memo out to our students that they are not to burn couches after a football game (or any sporting even for that matter). That it's only a game and if you win, you at least want to act like a good sport.
Nope Tek, the purpose of posting the article was purley for informational purposes. I had no intention of bashing OSU (where my step-father graduated from and taught, and my brother, sister, and niece graduated, and my nephew will begin his freshmen year in a week).
Like the title of thread asked: Isn't it just common sense? If I had wanted to bash OSU by posting the piece, then I would have added a comment at the end of the article. I didn't. You are wound too tight. Better loosen up.

It could go into any of three forums - Football (since we play 7 Oct and the incident occurred after a football game), Free-for-All, or Other Schools (which OSU is just another school).tekekini wrote:then post it in free for all...this had nothing to do with anything but to bring up negative news .
it happens, everyone already knew about it, they are trying to do something about it, let it take its course
Sorry you don't agree with where I decided to post it, but I purposely held it out of the Football forum because I did not feel it was the proper forum.

kids, kids, kids.
We must not throw stones in glass houses.
If my memory serves me correctly, BG, along with Miami, and OU, have had issues with students burning couches, athletes getting in trouble, etc.
We seem to forget Akili Hutchinson who played for BG in the early 90's that was arrested and eventually found guilty of raping a fellow student. Or One of the O'Neil brothers who knocked a few chicklits out of a fellow student's mouth and was subsequently sued for a pretty good chunk of change. Or our new "star' QB that was arrested for smoking pot in his SUV (does anyone know whether he actually owns it) while in a university parking lot.
I would say that about 99 percent of OSU fans are fed up with Clarrett. It began when he lied through his teeth over the incident involving the borrowed car that was broken into and his false police report. We were fed up with Troy Smith until he became a man and fessed up to his acceptance of cash from a booster. We stopped claiming Art Schlichter as one of our own when he went to jail the first or second time. Schlichter is so far removed from our mindset that he hasn't even been inducted into the OSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
I know that some of you like to point out OSU's falts because you are a fan of Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, and happen to live in the Buckeye State, but before doing so, think of the mistakes that your favorite players and coaches have made. Also, it is okay to be a fan of both BG and another school. Just so long as you support BG on game day.
