Perhaps they were so concerned by what happened that they wanted to make sure something was done about it. I'm not saying Paluch and Krebs would have ignored or tried to hide the situation, but there are a lot of schools that would.TheKa wrote:I have probably as much anger at this point for the Gutless Coward who sent the picture to the Sentinel Office. While in ABSOLUTELY NO WAY condoning this event, I wonder about the motivation of someone who didn't take this directly to the coaching staff. They obviously felt it necessary to embarrass the University, Athletic Department and the Program. I don't believe that this was sent in out of "concern" for anyone, but rather in a vicious attempt to "get back" at the program or an individual in the program.
I feel as passionately about Bowling Green athletics and hockey as anybody, but I just can't get mad at anybody other than the idiots involved in this. The person who sent the picture isn't at fault here...none of this would have happened if these clowns hadn't made the picture to begin with.
I did more than my share of drinking in Bowling Green. I did some things I wish I hadn't done. That's what many college students do.
But racism and racial slurs are just over the line, period. It's disgusting and it's completely unacceptable no matter what the situation. I don't care how many beers these guys had, if they were drunk at all. Anybody who puts himself in a situation where he's clearly associated with the use of racial slurs has no business ever wearing the brown and orange.
One of the things I've always loved about my school is that this sort of thing doesn't happen. BGSU has always run a tight ship and not put up with this crap. I'll lose an awful lot of respect for Paluch and Krebs, not to mention a lot of my enthusiasm for BGSU Athletics, if this is quietly swept under the rug.
I'm thinking they should take those responsible, strip them naked, write things like "idiot" and "racist" all over their bodies, and let Quinn Fair fire about 50 one-timers at each of them.

There are certain immutable issues that are going to require a serious and possibly lasting response.
If it were simply a bunch of hockey players playing a prank, this would be at worst, a distasteful stunt. The slurs make it a serious issue, the fact the player was passed out make it a student code issue. That it went public makes it a University issue where as it might have remained within athletics and student affairs otherwise. The drinking aspect winds up being a secondary issue amazingly enough.
Central to most everything else, is what, if anything, did the player abused say about the issue. The other players conduct demands action, but how the passed out player feels about matter will impact the severity of the response.
If the player that passed out expresses serious problems with what happened, then everybody in the picture should be off the team permanently. If he doesn't have any serious problem, and deems it a prank, then I can see the players coming back at some point next semester.
They will all wind up in alcohol and racial sensitivity training no matter what happens.
Before anything gets carved in stone, we need to let the University proceed with its normal investigation, let whatever details emerge that haven't already.
Overall though, given the embarrasement to the University at large, I think whatever level of punishment is given is more than fine by me and most folks.

yeah, that was a misreading on my part, not being familiar enough with the team and not seeing a "Barnett" on the roster, I thought the AP had a misspelling. I see now that I was wrong. My apologies.Falcon Fanatic wrote:
Only one was a captain (Sigalet and Minnebarriet were not suspended) and never in a million years would I have expected Dobek, Bru, or Rogo to be included in this. I really had no idea who the players would be until I read it on here this morning. This just makes me sick.

Don't you think there is something in the student code that says you aren't allowed to wait until somebody passes out and then write on them? I assure you, there is.BGSUfanatUT wrote:I want to know why they may get a punishment from the university? Stuff like this is not allowed when on a team like that, but where does it say stuff about this for the general university? Im pretty sure that If i go out to party with some friends, and we get trashed, and someone ends up naked and written on. And a picture ends up at the sentinel, I can't get kicked out of school. Maybe if they are there representing BGSU, I can see this. But it seems this is gettign quite out of hand to me, we dont even know what the context of the event is, and there are threats of absured amounts of punishment going around.

the racial slurs could be anything...
they could have written disparaging things about canada on him for all we know. they could have written about beavers, maple syrup and canucks.
college kids get drunk and do dumb things, it happens all the time. if you want to see it in action, walk around mac on a saturday morning and see the amount of kids who passed out the night before and got "shamed" with a sharpie.
and this supposedly happened in april of 2003, which would be after the season ended. alcohol was probably involved and it went over the line. calling for these guys' getting kicked off the team/expelled from BG is a little extreme.

I'm willing to bet that the racial slurs weren't about beavers or maple syrup.

If they violated team rules, then they violated team rules. Don't qualify the infraction with moral relativism. They do that at Miami(FL), Ohio State, Marshall, and a host of other schools. We do not do that at BG.BGFalcons232 wrote:alcohol was probably involved and it went over the line. calling for these guys' getting kicked off the team/expelled from BG is a little extreme.
The punishment, if the lads are guilty, will be up to the coaches and AD. So far, I've been very please with the way this situation has been handled. The lads know the rules and what would happen to them if those rules were broken.
We shall see how all this all shakes out.

All I can say about that is.....at least it wasn't football or men's basketball.
(I have added this emoticon to less offend those that I already did - see later post). That's the only good news (far cry) about it in my eyes. It's a shame when guys get caught up in the mix like this, because aside from embarrassing themselves, they embarrass the University, their teammates, other teams associated with the University, alumni, fans, parents of the players, etc.
GO BG!!!

I finally looked at our site postwork knowing that this incident would dominate conversation. I think many of the comments above are quite well stated.
1. Disappointment does not begin to describe my feelings.
2. Whatever punishments are handed out when Scott has the facts will be correct punishments. Count on it.
3. As bad as this is/could be, the quick response is exactly why you hire Paul Krebs and Scott Paluch.
4. The remaining players/coaches deserve our support and I will now alter my plans to do so this weekend.

ok i've read all your posts and now its my turn. I'm a hockey player myself, i played at emu for my frosh year before coming back home to bg. Let me tell you teams do things all the time and never get caught. Am i saying what they did was ok NOOO but i am saying that i think a few of you have gone off the deep end. Remember that there have been no charges no one is hurt and no one is in jail. These are kids and they're going to do dumb stuff like this, i've been involved in messing with people when the are the first to pass out at a party and i know lots of you have done the same at your time here in bg!!!! We don't know who sent the pic so we don't know how reall it is and none of us have even seen it!!! I don't believe that unless there are charges brought out by the university or the family of the one kid than no one should be kicked off the team unless the team rules say so. That said scott has done the right thing for now and we will see what happens, for now we have 20 players to support and 2 games to win.

GRRRRR!!!!!!!
I find this comment very insulting to the hockey program, especially after all the recent posting you have done on this forum. I was thrilled we had some new hockey fans on here. Thanks for the support....BGSU33 wrote:All I can say about that is.....at least it wasn't football or men's basketball.
Falconfan1, I will look for you at the hockey game on Saturday!!
GO FALCONS!!
SWEEEEEEEP THE LAKERS AND CRAZY FRANK!!!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
