Defense

Post by turtle »

I knew we were young on D, but come on. I was just looking at our 2 deep and wow, I think our d is fairly good now, but we are going to be the shnit here to come. Our only Sr. or Jr. on the whole two deep are Parks, williams, White, and Hargrove. While Parks is the man down there on the line, i like what i've seen out of Briggs this season a lot. Watching him play, he is a monster out there. I don't think a drop off at all when parks is gone. While the D is young, the secondary is just nuts. There isn't even a red-shirt So. Now i'm sorry, I don't mean to be looking to the future while we are in the thick of things this year, but i just can't get over how good we are being this young, wow.

Let's face it. The last few seasons, we've had a team with a prolific offense, and the only thing stopping us from a few undefeated conference seasons and conference titles has been a crappy defense. I'm sure that Gregg Brandon knew this all along and geared recruiting towards making the defense better, just as this past year's class was partly devoted to special teams play with Rojas and Ellis. Even if this compromises our offensive recruiting a bit, Brandon has shown in the past that we have an offensive system (actually two different systems based on the QB/RB/WRs we have, the Omar system and the Harris system) that work.

I agree. This D has made some rookie mistakes and the tackling still needs work but overall, I'm jacked about the progress Coach Lovitt has made this year. He had very little time to get going last summer after Beckman left after spring ball. I think Lovitt is showing why he's been successful at many different places.

I love this D!

I actually just looked at the 2deep as well before i came on AZZ. We are young but we lok good early. Even when urban meyer was here we were bad gainst fast teams and I believe 2001 (or 2002) is the standard for defense at BG. I think we wil be ok after OSU. I dont like how the offense has not had any consistancy with players getting hurt/suspended. Hopfully things will come around soon

Also remember that the flip side to a prolific offense is a defense that is on the field the majority of the game. Combine that with the fact Lovitt got a late start last season, I think the health of the unit is on an upward slope rather than a decline.

I like the way this year's offense can still churn out yards and points going ground first and passing on 3rd down if need be. It is a nice clock control sort of thing that makes the other team feel a sense of urgency and seems to play into our defense's hand. Our ends rush hard and our secondary can blitz as well as break up plays. . . now if we could just stop the runs up the middle more consistently. . .

We haven't learned (or forgot) how to tackle the opposing player. Too many times we do not wrap a guy up but try to stop him with just an arm and a fly-by. We need to dig our feet into the ground and stand strong.

Actually, digging in your feet is not the right thing to do. You need to keep your feet moving and run through the ball carrier to make a proper tackle.
