I told this to Niz last night (this morning) but ya'll need to hear it. That was FANTASTIC!!! Ya'll sound out bleeping standing. I thought the marching started out a little shaky yesterday and I think the music suffered slightly because of it, but you guys just kept getting better and better the longer you were on the field. (when I say 'little' and 'slightly' it's mainly Goofy just nit picking. Joe Schmo wouldn't notice)
Also, while it's not halftime I also loved pregame. The adding in of the fanfare from "I Hear America Singing" is a wonderful addition! Many alumni (myself included) hold the belief that you don't mess with Pre-game. This is one change I hope you hold on to and keep this change around!!
Great job yesterday!!! Keep up the good work!!

Great job, FMB!! You were the bright-spot of the day!
BUT..... I have a "complaint" to make.....re: the postgame music.
Perhaps it's just that I was in a lousy mood after the football fiasco, but I don't understand the logic to playing Beerbarrel Polka, complete with dancing etc. after a game like this...guess it might be the old coach in me that says there's nothing to celebrate, so why do it?

Beer Barrel is a game day tradition. It will never go away. On losing days, think of it as your cue to go and get wasted in your sorrow.
I'm a bit defensive of the Beer Barrel tradition. And I'm in a really bad mood. So that just struck a chord...

What Goofy and Saxy said. Beer Barrel is one of the few things the band does on game days that has nothing to do with the football team. They do it for themselves.

For Beer Barrel, normally the Maggots (tubas for you non-band people) march around dancing...last night, we did not, we just went down to the field and played towards the band. The one thing that gets changed, as far as I know of, depending on the outcome of the game is Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba. If the team wins, we play it, if they don't win, we don't play it.

Going back and comparing this to the last really standout show (Frontiers),

I quote a band member who marched this show: "frontiers stands out for the sheer reason it has never/will never be done again. It was an original. Patriotic shows are a dime a dozen, yes...but none has matched 2004's creative genius."
Also, Bohemian was a standout in 2004.
My point is, I don't think you can say that there hasn't been a "standout" show since Frontiers. That would be a false statement.

Didn't it used to be, also, that if the team lost, the band marched out of the stadium on drum taps rather than dancing to the cadences? I think that may have been before my time, but I'm sure I remember hearing that that was the case.....Strouse wrote:For Beer Barrel, normally the Maggots (tubas for you non-band people) march around dancing...last night, we did not, we just went down to the field and played towards the band. I don't think so, but I could be wrong. *I'll refrain from furthering my comments because they are derrogatory to a reader of this board.*FliccGirl wrote:Didn't it used to be, also, that if the team lost, the band marched out of the stadium on drum taps rather than dancing to the cadences? yesterday when we marched out we did both. did the cadence for a while, and then halfway to the light we just marched on taps. so maybe that is something we have done. not sure.FliccGirl wrote:Didn't it used to be, also, that if the team lost, the band marched out of the stadium on drum taps rather than dancing to the cadences? It used to be we would play a march to the East to wrap up the post game. And that tradition was around since before even I was born.
I loved it. It was a very classy end to a great day (college football: what could be better?) I wish they would bring it back.

I knew someone was going to take it like that when I posted itMy point is, I don't think you can say that there hasn't been a "standout" show since Frontiers. That would be a false statement.
I saw the patriotic show, and yes, it was very good. To me, there are good shows (creative, well played, and have a little something to make them memorable) and then there are the standout shows that define a band. To me, the Frontiers show was one of those shows. People who marched it will talk about it for years to come and people who saw it won't soon forget about it either. The FMB has had alot of good shows in the past several years, but to me, that Frontiers show really stands out, as does the one from this weekend. Different people will certainly have different shows that have that kind of effect on them.
