Nick Davis out for the season

Post by Warthog »

from Wednesday's Blade:

Soph NG Nick Davis, who started the first three games, is out for the season after blowing out his knee in practice last week. On a non-contact play, Davis tore his ACL and lateral meniscus. He likely will have surgery next week and could be back for spring practice.

Sad news, maybe this had an effect on the team last week? :?

Ouch...Well DJ Young, Ream and Minturn will have to pick up the slack...although none of them are nearly big enough to play DT... :!:

THis is how I feel about things like this, and I cant help from doing it even though I understand the flawed logic. Davis's injury could very well be a very good thing.

We have lacked size in the interior of our line and we have been run on consistently because of it. We have very fast LBs who have a ton of ability but who are undersized. They need to be able to run and make plays. This year very well may be a wash. I know we are 2-2, but it was not a pretty 2-2. I get the feeling that this is a feeling out year. The kind of year where there are so many positions up for grabs and so many areas that need worked on that the record won't indicate the talent. The kind of year where you have a QB who has played well but cant throw so you need to find him a position because he has to be on the field. The kind of year where you have a QB who can throw who may be a bit too fragile to be a full time lon-term guy. The kind of year where a True Freshman takes over at the end of a half and shows some ability. The kind of year where one of those three (Or likely two) step up and leaves no question at the QB spot. Troy Smith style. And the kind of year where a true Freshman has to start at DT, Another Mammoth of a Redshirt Freshman is in the rotation and another active fedshirt Freshman is in the roatation. I for some reason always think that on a bad team an injury is a blessing that gives you depth for next year. Nick Davis is still going to be a solid DT (hopefully) but taking him out of the lineup and putting Young in will give us three experienced DTs each over 280. Pair that with the Fiesty Briggs on one end and a very niced sized end on the other Frericks (266), Hardwick (260), James (255). Then you add in the fact that Dozier and Hargrove will both be back.....guys who NEED big lineman to eat up tackles in order to be effective lbs. And now we have three very large DTs with experience. When have we ever had that.

That is if Davis comes back healthy.....and they dont move him to the O-line.

I don't see how losing Davis is a good thing at all, but yeah Minturn and Young need more time in there.

I'm sorry but losing Davis is not a good thing, IMO> He has some experience which Young and Minturn lack. I'm not saying Young and Minturn won't step up. Davis goes 280 himself.

I mentioned he weighed 280. The point is that with Davis for a year we would have had a bad season with one player who already had some starting time and two players who rotate in at times coming back for what should be an improved year next year. With Davis out this year we now will likely have 3 280+ DT's with a great deal of experience eating up MAC blockers. Rare in the MAC I think. The flaw in my logic is that the injury makes it so that his development may be hindered and it fails to recognize the Dakich factor. Meaning that any and all of these players may not be on this team next year for various reasons. Injuries on a bad team in the short term lead to depth in the long term which leads to a better team. As long as said injuries are not debilitating.

Do I like to see Davis out for the year? No. Do I wish injuries on anyone, no. Do I wish this injury was much more short term and had a much lower potential for long term issues? Of course. However, I can clearly see the silver lining in getting DJ Young and Brady Minturn more minutes during a down year.

Get Healthy Davis. I picture you as the centerpiece of what will be one of the best lines in BG history.
