CFN can see the writing on the wall

Post by Warthog »

From Richard Cirminiello's Quick Outs:
"If Florida’s 4-0 start and top 5 ranking aren’t enough to convince you Urban Meyer is a pretty good coach, take a look at how Bowling Green and Utah have fared since he left those schools. Neither school has been able to reach the heights it did when Meyer was on campus, and the Falcons, in particular, are beginning to exhibit dangerous signs of their pre-Meyer days"

Guess hammb, J4H, and I are not the only ones being negative.

That's categorically false though...Meyer didn't win a divisional title or a bowl here and he didn't end a season ranked in the top 25. Brandon won the West, two bowls and finsihed a seaon in the top 25 and one in the top 30.

By any measure, Brandon has had more success here than Meyer did.

I agree with Flipper. While I don't deny the fact there are things that need fixed and areas of concern in both players and coaches, this statement by CFN.com is comical at best.
Urbie's now in his 3rd year in Gainesville, has the cream of the crop for recruiting and should be in the Top 10 almost every year. Urbie is a fine coach, no doubt.

Well, this brings up that old arguement that Brandon won all of this with Meyers players. So here we go again..........

So if they were Urban's players running Brandon offense, what's the problem now?

A. Current players aren't as talented as previous group
B. Current players are young and haven't matured yet
C. We aren't running the same offense as before
D. We are running same offense, players can't execute as well
E. Urban's teams had more discipline than Brandon teams do now
F. All the above

A and D -- no way, Jose.

B, C, and E are huuuuuuge.

The biggest problem with the offense right now is Brandon isn't the OC. He's a terrific OC when that's all he has to worry about. As a head coach, he's stretched to thin and our offense has struggle mightily because of it.

I love how everyone rips apart CFN for its writing until it fits in with what they believe.

I don't generally have an opinion one way or the other about CFN.

That being said, I pretty much agree with what the CFN guy is saying here. The only team that Brandon has ever coached to be even close to what '02 was is the first year he was here in '03. How much of that was the residual effect of Urban, and how much was really Brandon's great coaching?

I think the subsequent decline in each year following is pretty good evidence towards the former rather than the latter.

Our '04 team was a fluke to even get to a bowl game and wasn't nearly as good as the 3 years previous, IMO. They still put up huge offensive numbers and blew out a lot of teams, but I don't think that TEAM was as good as '01-'03.

One thing that needs to be remembered, and I fall into the trap more than most, is that it's not completely fair to compare Brandon with Urban. I fully believe Urban is one of the top 3 or 4 coaches in the entire country. During his tenure here we were definitely in the top 10 in the NCAA as far as how well coached we were. It's insane to expect Brandon to be that good...if he truly were that good he wouldn't stay here for long.

My problems with Brandon have less to do with how he compares to Urban Meyer than they do with how he compares to Gary Blackney.

I think I've been pretty consistent on this one - CFN stinks on ice.
