Part of me says the kids took thinks a little too far (Clue anyone). Another part of me says the athletic department is getting what is deserves for doing things on the cheap and not having any faculty supervision. Short of public nudity, profanity, or anything sexual in nature, I think these kids have something unique and it would be a shame if it was lost (Buffo).

To compare the shenanigans of that rudderless band to that of BUFFO is a high insult to the history which is BUFFO.

Yeah, that's not anything like Buffo. Though only us old folks even have firsthand knowledge of Buffo  . Buffo was satirical, poked fun at people, but always in a lighthearted way and never did offensive things like cutting open dead goats (though there were a few 'dead goats' in our section that year that should have been harvested...)

I'm gonna have to disagree and say the two groups are in very similar situations. Stanford's band has no faculty supervision and has crossed many lines. Buffo, as much as I love them, publically humiliated a grad student in front of those in attendance at the band banquet. If you would have talked to her right after as I did you would know just how much the cruel things said and visual aids hurt her. I have great respect for Buffo, but very little for those who were serving as Buffo at the time. A little faculty supervision would have kept both groups out of trouble. Stanford still have a band, although they are suspended. Because of the actions of a few people Buffo may be gone forever.

Yup, one isolated event - after which apologies were quickly delivered - killed a tradition.

I believe the punishment in this case did NOT match the offense.

Didn't Buffo receive numerous warnings about messing with this GA?

The punishment didn't fit the crime, a suspension would have been in order, not termination of Buffo

Thank you. The banquet incident was the capstone on a season full off warnings and inapropriate behavior. But back to my original comparison. Had the Stanford band had more direct supervision from the Univrersity this may not have happened. And had Buffo had a little more supervision they may still be a part of the FMB. But students were permitted to go about their business unchecked. Do I think Buffo's punishment fit their crime, absolutly not. Can I understand why they were punished, absolutly.

That's the first I've heard that BUFFO repeated the offense - in this matter and in any others. Perhaps there was some grating against the current adminstration. Chief envy, I suppose.

BUFFO was initially to be suspended. But it became a rather simple matter to allow the suspension to continue indefinitely. Nuisance removed because memories are short.

I am not sure I can make it to homecoming next week, but perhaps we arrange a big alum gathering with Tom Srail dressed in Buffo gear and "bring back buffo" signs.

From my understanding, alumni are in "talks" with the current band administration attempting to bring BUFFO back.

I wouldn't want to upset the proverbial apple cart.

Now, if those talks have broken off, then I call on all alumni to wear masks, flannel, and black capes next week. :-D

Wouldn't that be beautiful?
