Garret Wolfe = Amazing
I may be a huge BG fan but it is good to see a MAC player have a huge game as long as it isnt against BG of course. And today Garret definatly had a huge game even if it was against Ball State. Here is his stat line:
CAR YDS AVG TD LG
Garrett Wolfe 31 351 11.3 3 75

was just about to share, they had a pretty good column on him in the Indy Star today, about how no matter what he does, he should just be happy if he gets in the top 5 of the Heisman vote...

On Around the Horn the other day one of the columinsts was saying he should be the Heisman favorite right now. I agree.Schadenfreude wrote:Garrett ought to win the Heisman. These are sick numbers, and he's done nearly as much against Ohio State and Michigan.
He's a superfreak. These are Randy Moss-type numbers -- and whoever won the Heisman Moss' last year, it was the wrong guy

Just like Omar should have in 04. The big boys will always play the competition card, and nobody from this conference will ever have a prayer of winning it, fundamentally wrong as that may be.
I'd say it was possible if a MAC team ran the table, but Alex Smith didn't win it. What more could he have done?

On ESPN today, they showed his current stats right now. He is on pace to break Barry Sanders record in most rushing yards in a season. If he can keep up his average, which is around 9.5 per rush, he can break the record which is 7.2 or something. I would like to see him get the Heisman IF he can keep up the numbers.
Roll On!!!
Another view of Wolfe and the Heisman, chock full o' backhanded compliments and putdowns.

I disagree. 21 years ago we had a pretty darn good QB at BG that was lucky to get in the top 10 of the votes. In this BCS Big Money era of football and the lowered scholarship numbers and recent 'success' from the MAC, the time is better than ever for Mid Am players to be in this discussion.kdog27 wrote:20 years ago I think he could have won it. Now the award goes to the QB on an undefeated team 80% of the time.
Heck look at what Troy Davis from Iowa State did and he was lucky to get in the top 5.

Andre Ware won it in 1989 for Houston. As did Ty Detmer a year later. Sometimes the best player in the country is on the #1 or #2 team in the country but nowadays being that player pretty much guarantees a top 3 finish in the voting. Ware was the last player that was not on a high profile team to win it. If Ware was playing today I bet he wouldn't win it.

kdog- interesting topic. .. for discussions sake here is a look at the finalists from those years you mentioned:
[/code]
In 1989 Major Harris is the only finalist I'd heard of/remember. . .Granted Detmer wins with some good competition in Rocket and Bieniemy, but then he falls to third the following year. That seems to be a thread as the other underclassman winners who returned (that I picked out of the list quickly)- White and Leinert each also finished third the following season.1988
1 Barry Sanders Oklahoma State Jr. RB
2 Rodney Peete Southern California Sr. QB
3 Troy Aikman UCLA Sr. QB
4 Steve Walsh Miami (FL) Jr. QB
5 Major Harris West Virginia Jr. QB
1989
1 Andre Ware Houston Jr. QB
2 Anthony Thompson Indiana Sr. RB
3 Major Harris West Virginia Jr. QB
4 Tony Rice Notre Dame Sr. QB
5 Darian Hagan Colorado So. QB
1990
1 Ty Detmer Brigham Young Jr. QB
2 Raghib Ismail Notre Dame Jr. FL
3 Eric Bieniemy Colorado Sr. RB
4 Shawn Moore Virginia Sr. QB
5 David Klingler Houston Jr. QB

4 Steve Emtman Washington Jr. DT
5 Shane Matthews Florida Jr. QB 246

Tony Rice was the QB of the National Championship team that beat Harris' Mountaineers in the Fiesta Bowl. He was ND's first black QB. He had both of those things going for him.Dayons_Den wrote:kdog- interesting topic. .. for discussions sake here is a look at the finalists from those years you mentioned:

Ismail probably should've beaten out Detmer.

Wolfe's Amazing Numbers
October 5th, 2006
Garrett Wolfe has rushed for more yards (1,181) than Troy Smith has passed for (1,070). He has scored as many touchdowns as Smith has tossed (12).
Smith is averaging 8.36 yards per pass attempt. Wolfe is averaging 9.3 yards per carry.
Adrian Peterson has just 10 less carries than Wolfe, but he is behind him in rushing by 538 yards.
Peterson would have to average 53.8 yards on his next 10 carries to keep pace.
