Everson's foot was in bounds and his body was crossing the sideline. When his feet landed out of bounds, he was met head on by Smith. I can see drilling him if he's straddling the sideline, but it looked pretty obvious that he was going out of bounds. It's not like he's going to rotate in mid air and proceed upfield.

He should have been tossed.

Lets not be too critical, I'm sure there wasn't any intent to injure or maim. Like I say from where we were sitting it looked like a clean hit.

Agreed. I don't want to totally threadjack this, because it sounded like Briggs had a big, breakout-type day.

I loved what I saw from him late last year when he got in, and he has been pretty impressive when he's been in there this year. He is quick off the ball and can consistently pressure the QB...that's valuable.

Briggs & Dozier are quickly becoming my favorite players on the team. They're young and they look like they have the potential to be first team all MAC someday.

Until he proves that he knows how to properly tackle somebody I have no use for him. He's a headhunter who's out to make the sportscenter highlights when he should be trying to stop the ball carrier. It seems to be 50/50 whether those two interests coincide in his case.
GIVE ME A BREAK! Antonio is not the kind of guy out to make a highlight reel. He is one of our best players on defense and to say he should be benched until he proves he knows how to tackle is ludicrous. I am pretty sure he has clearly shown that he knows how to tackle. The hit was a late hit, but not by much...There was no intent to injure anybody, Although the play was ruled a late hit, it got our defense very pumped. I like to see aggressiveness....Its funny to see people call players out about the kind of people they are without even knowing them.....enough said....nice to have ya back on the field antonio!

I tend to agree, from the play I've seen out of Smith it's all been pretty good.

And as everyone has mentioned, Briggs and Dozier are two really tough customers. All over the place, great play.

...and yes, i appologize for not acknowledging briggs in my last post... he is a great player and will definately be a stud for us in the years to come. Dozier is also a monster out there.

I don't know Antonio, and even if I did I would not let that change my opinion of him. I base my opinions from watching him play the game. He may be a great hit, but he plays the game like he's always trying to make a highlight reel. Especially when it comes to tackling...or attempting to anyways.

He is flat out among the worst 3 or 4 tacklers I've ever seen and the next time I see him try to tackle someone the proper way will be the first.

He's a good cover guy, and cover CBs are not expected to be your best tacklers. Still, I think he exemplifies what has been wrong with our defense the last few years, and it bugs the hell out of me.

Well, for one hes young and will continue to improve at tackling. I dont really see where your coming from when you say hes the worst 3 or 4 tacklers you have seen. Thats crazy. But I suppose we can agree to disagree. Antonio is clearly a guy who fell through the cracks and we were lucky to land him here in BG. And to say one of the 3 or 4 worst tacklers you have ever seen? wow...

Briggs really started coming on late last year. He made a couple of plays last year that were phenomenal (running down Miami's Brandon Murphy from 5 yds behind was an eye popper). it's Iood to see him building on that this year.

I love Antonio's enthusiasm and his energy he brings to the table. He also plays cover pretty well. I think he will end up being an All-Mac performer for us. However, I agree that he tries to but a hard hit on when he should be just tackling. In stead of trying to go through a guy by going high, just tie his ankles together and he'll go down...no matter how big he is. Antonio's young and will continue to get better and smarter. He's the least of my worries with this team and this program. He's a difference maker on a defense that doesn't have lot of those type players right now.

I think making SC's top 10 with a big hit in his first game was about the worst thing that could have happened to him.

He'll get burnt a couple more times, and eventually learn.

Dayons has the best description of anyone. I saw it, too, and he described it exactly correctly. It might not have looked that way to Todd Walker, but it was a very dirty hit. The Marshall metaphor was perfect.

Well, having actually been there, I don't know. There didn't seem to be any kind of overwhelming recation from the Bobcat faithful (of which there were many, to their credit), so I don't know. The hit was definately the LOUDEST that I have ever heard in person, and I certainly hope that Austin doesn't have any lasting effects from it. Indeed, I was very happy to see him return to the lineup in short order. Still, having not seen any definitive replays of the hit, I really don't know how anyone can demonize Antonio for playing his heart out and trying to make plays. You all know that I am not about to make excuses for blatently dirty play (there is nothing that I find more repulsive), but there is a very, very big difference between intent to harm and intent to tackle. I think a lot of you are simply assuming the motives of a player when you really have no foundation upon which to base your opinions on that the actual motives of said player.

All that being said, I truly do hope that Austin is OK. I believe that he is based on the way he was able to come back and complete passes, but one never knows. I don't have much respect for OU's coaching staff, but, as collegiate players, I have a great deal of respect for the members of their team.
