I grew up in the Columbus area, but never considered OSU...... too big and impersonal and just not for me. I applied to and was accepted at Miami, BG, and Toledo.

When I toured BG's campus, it just felt like home. It just clicked. :) I remember saying something to my dad about thinking it was prettier than the other campuses we had visited, and he looked at me like I was crazy. Maybe I didn't mean prettier, exactly, but I didn't know how to say what I meant. It all just seemed to fit.

(And the fact that I was later offered a full scholarship didn't hurt either. )

And here was I thinking everyone around here seemed like such sholars!

When it was time to consider higher education, I applied to a few UK universities, but my heart burned for Colorado, because at that time I was something of an alpine skier (yes, unbelievably Britain has a ski team!), and I was sure my future belonged in the mountains, on snow.

Meanwhile, my father's side of the family comes from Columbus, and were well known to OSU's and BGSU's "most wanted - reward negotiable" lists as students, alums, and faculty. Logistically, I guess Ohio made sense, and coming from a British single sex boarding school with a graduating class of 10 made OSU rather culturally scary. On the other hand, I knew one end of a rugby ball from another and had a pretty good turn of pace as an outside center. BGSU had a halfway decent rugby team at the time, and I suppose what capped it was my Uncle Don, a BGSU physics professor, who did more to sell the university by what he didn't say than what he did.

So I showed up at BGSU with pen, paper, and my 205cm Rossignol ST comp giant slalom skis. What can I say? Nobody had said anything about 16,000 drop dead gorgeous female undergrads, and only 4,000 male undergrads. I thought "S*d the rugby", and my grades slid from the start accordingly. I made my uncle's day by being the only family member to take his physics class, and he ruined mine by awarding me with a "C".

Uncle Don retired a couple of years after I graduated. In his usual modesty, he said you know its time to retire when you win the dubious honour of being the first facultative member to take the stage. What a dude.

I always had a feeling I'd end up here. As a Detroit native transplanted to Columpiss, My family made a lot of trips up and down 23/75, so I saw BG probably in the vicinity of 100 times before I ever thought about college.

When it came time to think about applying, I considered Wittenberg, Ohio Northern and BG - oh, and was pressured into considering UT (they have insiders at my HS),

I visited Wittenberg and, while I thought the campus was beautiful, I absolutely hated the place. The people were cold and distant and it just didn't feel right. I ended up applying to BG, ONU and UT (don't tell anybody!)

Really though, when it came down to it, it wasn't even a question. My three acceptance letters came and I never thought twice about it. BG was going to be the place for me. I loved the campus from my first visit, the people were amazing and I just KNEW it would be my new home.

And I've never looked back. I love this city, these people and, of course, these teams. :D

Yes, I brought skis to Bowling Green. If I'd gone to the Sahara I'd have taken skis there, too. BG kind of dropped the axe on my skiing career, but I've done just about everywhere else in the Northern hemisphere, so why not Ohio and Michigan!

In fact of all the places where I ever ever used the planks, Michigan is the only place TO THIS DAY where I've had to leave the slopes because of impending frostbite. Amazing.... but true. Can't beat a Midwest winter for some bracing fresh air!

Eddy the Eagle. What can I say? I've met him, and he doesn't wear the glasses for the benefit of his reputation!

getting to BGSU

Post by The Niz »

I had heard of BGSU maybe twice in my life until my senior year of high school. My very good friend Turkey (then known as Nick) was planning on coming here because of some family ties so I decided to have my ACT test scores sent here just for kicks. My plan all along was to go to Akron for one year, so that I could live at home and hold a job then save up enough money to transfer to OSU. When a letter from BG came in the mail requesting my application and telling me of my scholarship eligability after receiving my scores altered my plans. Akron literally sent me a letter every two weeks after I applied to them remingding me to schedule/attend my orientation class. I put them in the paper shredder every time they came. I immediately applied to BGSU and was accepted. My mom was so excited that she opened the letter before I even got home from baseball practice. I read that letter and from that day on I knew where I was supposed to be. I still have my old feelings for OSU, but nothing can be put ahead of BG. I didn't even have to visit the campus to know where I belonged. It was a few words on a piece of paper that told me where to go. That and a certain Band director who spent a couple years here and told me how amazing the marching band was...
Yeah right girl!

Is it bad to say that I applied at Bowling Green and Heidelberg? My high school messed up in sending my SAT scores to Hberg, so I just sent the application and scores to BG in hopes I'd get a letter. I didn't even want to go to Hberg, it was just a back-up to here. I never even thought about any place else. I love it here. :-D

I applied to BG, Youngstown, and Ohio. Got into BG and Youngstown. I had no idea where I wanted to go. If I got into Ohio, I was going to go there. But they said something like, i can't come until the second quarter. Werid. So I put off deciding until like the day before BG and Youngstown had to know if I choose them. My mom locked me in my room and told me I can't come out until I knew. So I just said well BG seemed like a better college and not so janky and there is where I have been for 5 years. SO glad I chose BG. And glad I didnt get into Ohio, I probably would of been there now (BOO) SO that is how i got to BG...

When I was in high school and considering colleges, my Dad gave me three choices: BG, TU, or UPay!!! I had a brother that got an education degree from BG and another brother who got an engineering degree from TU (back then, that is what we called it!!). I didn't like the idea of going to Toledo, plus BG had the major I wanted (Deaf Education). No problem making that decision!! And I surely wasn't going to "UPay"!!! :-D I met BGFan there in the spring of my freshman year and we have been together ever since! :smt057

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Period. I didn't give consideration to any another school.

I grew up in Cleveland and wasn't very familiar with BGSU until I started researching schools. BG was one or two in every category on my research list. Once I visited the school, I threw away my list.

BGSU just "fit". I get the exact same feeling whenever I get back to visit. My God, how I love that school.
Wow - this is identical for me. I only applied to BGSU. love at first sight.
