Just for the record - here's The Streak

Post by 1987alum »

The week leading up to our trip to BG wouldn't be complete without a quick review of The Streak, which Noah is looking to extend to seven games across four years and four states.

The streak started November 15, 2003. The Falcons were at home after a brutal, nationally televised beating at the hands of Big Ben and the Redskins. Kent State arrived at The Doyt for what should have been an easy "rebound" game. But the Falcons were flat, the Flashes had Josh Cribbs, the weather was foul and the students were on break. Key memory: Late in the game, Brandon turned to the crowd and started waving his arms, urging more noise. Noah looked at me and asked, "Why is Coach Brandon doing that." I explained and a switch flipped - he believed that Brandon was talking directly to him, as if to say, "Noah, I need you to help win this game." Noah jumped to his feet and the rest, as they say, is history.

Christmas morning, 2003 ... Noah opens his final present and finds the orange #5 BG jersey he had been longing for. Tucked inside were two tickets to the Motor City Bowl. Key memories: 1) Noah expressing his frustration with our defense - "When I play college football, I'm going to play for Bowling Green and I'm going to stuff people." 2) Watching Josh Harris direct that final TD drive, firing a dart to Cole Magner for the winning TD just in front of us. 3) Noah tearing up as Harris received his game MVP award.

The Falcons stumbled out of the gate in 2004 and, much like 2003, we found ourselves preparing for a game after a tough road loss to a key MAC opponent, this time NIU. BG visited Temple and righted a lot of wrongs. Key memory: Noah standing up in the third quarter and saying, to no one in particular, "This is the greatest football game I have ever seen."
BGSU 70, Temple 16

We headed to BG on Family Weekend for the Western Michigan game. The skies were clear and it was much warmer than expected. And BG posted a shutout. Key memories: BG got the ball right before halftime and I said, "BG will just run the clock out now." Noah shook his head and said, "No, they're going to score again." Sure enough, P.J. Pope ripped off a long run and the Falcons tacked on another TD before the half. Also, Mrs. Hart helping Noah secure post-game autographs.

Ahh, the 2004 GMAC Bowl. What a great trip. Mobile was such a great time - the parade the day before the game was unbelievable and so was the pregame monsoon! Key memories: For some reason we sat fairly high up in the stands, even though there were plenty of empty seats ... staying up really late watching replays from the game ... hanging out with Transfer (and the Eastern University basketball team) in the New Orleans airport because our flight to Philly had been delayed. As it turns out, US Air baggage handlers walked out and the Philly airport was a mob scene. We walked into baggage claim and it was wall-to-wall people, most of whom had been waiting several hours. Meanwhile, the carousel for our flight started moving and our bags were the first off.

We picked the Ohio game last year. Looking back, it doesn't seem that big a deal, but lots of folks were hyping Solich and the Bobcats as a force to be reckoned with, and a home victory against Pittsburgh only sent the bandwagon into high gear. Key memories: Noah & The Freaklings terrorizing the Ohio Alumni tent ... As the game started, Noah was in the Kids Zone playing. Meanwhile, the Falcons had botched a trick kick return and it looked like the Bobcats were going to seize control. They lined up for a field goal as Noah came up and said he was ready to get to our seats. Clang, the field goal bounced off the upright and that was that ... great post-game autograph & photo session.

So, Eastern Michigan, are you ready?

Thanks for posting these, I always enjoy reading your posts about Noah. He seems like a really great kid and a HUGE Falcon fan. Hopefully Saturday I'll finally sack up and join in the tailgate and maybe meet you guys.

1987Alum, here's to meeting you and Noah this weekend. After reading your posts I can't wait for my son Logan to meet Noah, maybe some of his sportsmanship will rub off on Logan. My youngest son did make quite the impression on the football players at the reception before season. Anyway let's watch a great game on Saturday. Go BG!

I remember hearing Noah tell me himself (very excitedly and only slightly incoherently) about The Streak during the GMAC pep rally. '87, your kid rocks. 8)

Yeah, it was funny hearing him yell across the street during the parade to the Memphis fans on the other side, telling them they had no chance to win.

My kid is a nerd and a goof, but I love him!
