The grandfather of MAC coaching had good reason to be grumpy. Miami is still allowing their students to sit behind the opposing bench:

Unless NIU brought a band, it looked like Miami(OH)'s band was behind the edge of the NIU bench as well, I thought.
Best part of the first link is the commenter who calls Miami(OH) a "longtime member of the Mid-Ohio Conference".

Joe needs only too look at his own student 'fans' actions during the BG-NIU game in 2002 to see why a rule had to be written and put in place.
That game, in which we had bottles, pennies, and massive amounts of vulgarities hurled at us in the visitor fan section behind the BG bench, was one of the major reasons this rule was drafted.
It's a shame it has to be an actual rule and not just a gentlemen's agreement amongst the schools.

I agree. That was brutal. The NIU fans were horrible in the 2002 game. My wife has since told me that she'll never go to a game in DeKalb again.Dayons_Den wrote:Joe needs only too look at his own student 'fans' actions during the BG-NIU game in 2002 to see why a rule had to be written and put in place.

Students or not, I would have to believe that the university could remove anyone from the stands for bad behavior.Rightupinthere wrote:What is the students purchased the tickets in which they were sitting?
If that's the case, I don't see a way for Miami to police that.
Isn't this thing covered in that NCAA disclaimer about being respectful to players, coaches and officials that is read over the PA before each game?
