Editorial: On the march against band

UW Marching Band at Camp Randall Stadium
The question is: Has the University of Wisconsin's marching band done something so egregious that it deserves to be put on strict probation or has the ghost of Puritan Cotton Mather reappeared on the UW campus in the form of Chancellor John Wiley?
Wiley has the band's fans scratching their heads over what it was that some of its members did during or after its appearance Sept. 23 at the UW-Michigan game in Ann Arbor that has so infuriated Wiley. But neither the chancellor nor his office is saying and the band members claim they can't figure out what it could have been.
All anyone knows is that Wiley is fed up with the band's behavior and he's laid down the law that if something untoward happens again, the band will do without some of its critical parts or maybe even be disbanded as a whole. And that goes for band director Mike Leckrone too.
Which leads us to wonder who will be booed louder at a football game that's minus Leckrone's band - the opposing team or Chancellor John Wiley?

From the Chicago Tribune:
UW details marching band conduct that led to probation
By Ryan J. Foley
The Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. -- Members of the University of Wisconsin marching band routinely engaged in inappropriate hazing involving alcohol and sexual behavior, the school said Thursday in explaining its decision to put the band on probation.
UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley said in a statement that a band member was pressured into shaving his head in a hazing incident and other members danced seminude during the band's trip to the Sept. 23 University of Michigan football game.
Wiley said those behaviors, the latest after several years of reported misconduct, prompted him to warn the band's 300 members to shape up or risk losing their travel and performance privileges.
Other behaviors attributed to band members in the past include:
-- female members being forced to kiss each other to gain entry to bus bathrooms.
-- women being forced to draw pornographic pictures for more senior band members.
-- younger band members being forced to run errands and refill beer cups for older members.
``From reports we have received, it has become increasingly clear that certain types of sexualized and hazing behavior are an ingrained part of the band's culture,'' Wiley said. ``We will not provide an ongoing venue for this inappropriate and demeaning behavior.''

I wish you all could have heard the email that one of their band members wrote to Dr. Hayward/the FMB after the clash in Cleveland. Some girl wrote an extensive email full of her highest remarks and compliments. She almost sounded jealous. Particular words that stood out in the letter were 'your band has class' and 'we're not used to being congradulated by the opposing band as we come off of the field...' When Dr. Hayward was reading the email to us she literally started glowing when she read the part about us having class as it has seemingly been one of her highest priorities to establish the FMB as a true class act. I wonder if Mr. Leckrone has said anything to the effect of "why can't ya'll be more like that falcon band?' in the past week or two?
Yeah right girl!
