Turn(er) Him Loose...Let's Find Out?

Post by Rollo83 »

To be fair, have we really had a chance to see the real Anthony Turner? I mean how can you look good running the plays that are consistently being called? Can you imagine Omar trying to run these plays? How good would he have looked?

Which leads me to my next question: Has the coaching staff made a wrong evaluation of Turner's talents as a QB? Maybe his talents are closer to Omar's than those of Josh Harris?

His glaring weakness right now is with his feet. He looks slow and he doesn't break tackles or make people miss. Is this because of the injured shoulder? Probably not…I don't think he'll become the runner Freddie Barnes is even when he is healthy.

Maybe he is that guy we saw in the Spring Game, throwing the ball all over the place? But, how would we know because Brandon has him under wraps. I have to admit that the after the pick-pix last night, I thought well this may be why Brandon has not taken the wraps off.

The bottom line is Turner has four games left to prove he is the QB of this team for the next two years. I want Brandon to open the offense up and put Turner back in the shotgun like we did with Omar. Have him run the same offense as last year and let him throw it 35 to 40 times a game. I don't care if he throws interceptions...at least we'll know one way or another.

What do we have to lose? This way, we'll know if Turner is the QB of the future for this "young" team of underclassmen. Because if we can find a QB threat to go along with Bullock, look out!

I give him one more game. If he can't lead this offense to some big points (30+) vs a horrendous Temple team, than I say it is time to turn the page and see what Sheehan can do in the final three games.

From what I've seen Turner's glaring weaknesses are

A) Inability to quickly see the defense and make the read, and
B) Lack of confidence to deliver the ball to the read he makes

It's easier to see these things when you're at the game live than watching on TV, but AT really struggles to see where he needs to go with the ball. For instance, we run a lot of hitch routes. If you're throwing a hitch or curl route you must deliver the ball early so that when the WR turns around the ball is on it's way. AT waits for the WR to make the break and then delivers the ball. By that time the guy is either not open, or he has to come back 2-3 yards to catch the ball and all his momentum is taking him back towards the LOS...hence a lot of WRs with very low ypc stats.

There are also a lot of times that he sits in the pocket dancing around rather than delivering the ball. Or he pump fakes, then throws the ball to where he just pumped it too. That is telling me that he's not confident in what he sees and is tentative in delivering the ball. This lack of confidence really seems to cause him some zip on the passes as well.

Turner isn't going to make anyone think he's Mike Vick, and that's okay. To me his biggest issues are mental. I know he's relatively new to starting, but it is disappointing to see so many mental struggles in a guy his 3rd year into the system. Hopefully he improves, but I'm not 100% confident in that just yet.

I am not ready to pull the plug on him yet. Lets give the kid the rest of the season to see if he starts to get it together.

However, if he "limps" through the last four games and doesn't show signs of improvement...then all bets are off in Spring ball next year. We have a full blown QB competition on our hands.

But my point is...we will really get a read on Turner if he continues to run this offense as it is currently being run?

Here is what I will know about Anthony Turner so far at the end of this year:

* He has had three years in the BG system running the Brandon/Studwa offense.

* He thought enough about his position as the potential leader of this football team to get caught smoking weed in the parking lot of his dorm over the summer.

* He has shown flashes of potential but has never been able to put together any type of consistentcy given his opportunities.

* He has shown little potential as a dual threat QB...he hasn't been effective as a runner and he has been very inconsistent as a passer. What dual threat exists here?

I agree as well. Although, if he struggles against Temple, I would like to see Sheehan and what he can do. I was frustrated with AT last night. Some of his throws were perfect while others were not even close.

When Turner got busted, I wanted Brandon to suspend him for the whole season in order to help establish a more disciplined environment for the program (both on and off the field) and act as a deterrent for future trouble with other players. Almost everyone on this board thought that was too harsh (and probably still think that way). However, if that had taken place, we'd probably have the same record right now (except for possibly losing the Buffalo game) and Sheehan would have received that long look that many now want to see.

It will probably be a three-man competition next year for the job regardless of what takes place the last four games.

If you accept a full-ride scholarship to play D1 athletics and you screw up...you can expect comments like this. It comes with the territory. You've earned them.

I don't think Macman's comment was wrong. I'm not very pleased that he got off so easy. Other people have been banned from sports for what he's done.

ON what basis does everyone think Sheahn is ready to go? A few plays against Kent, when they had a big lead? Seems like he had some problems, too. With QBs, the grass is always greener on the other side.

Good point. I hope AT can get it in gear and kick some tail.
