Painting a football field

Post by mjmorefield »

I have no idea where to go to have this question answered and figured someone on the board could help me out.

What type of paint do you use to paint logos on athletic fields?

The school system I work for wants to start painting our Blue Devil logo on the 50 yd line, (next year) and seem to think the elementary art teacher (me) would have the answer. While I learned a lot in the Fine Arts building at BGSU, turf painting was a skill never developed. :-)

Thanks for any info and BEAT THE CHIPPEWAS!

I'm pretty sure at my old high school we just used regular spray paint?

I imagine at bigger programs and waht not there is some different paint used though.

I've e-mailed the people from Missouri turf...haven't heard back though. The Chemistry article was very informative. Thanks. I just know I'll be the one out there painting the 50, I figure I might as well do it right. By the way...the shop teacher, middle school football coach for Independence was a D-Lineman for the Falcons from 83-86, Mike Foor. I thought I heard a while back he was related to someone on the board.

Yeah, I heard that too... but I don't think his relative posts around here much.

Check with your local Sherwin-Williams commercial store like the one at West 117th and Bellaire. SW makes paint for just about every application, so I'm sure they'd be able to help you. The commercial stores also carry specialized products that the neighborhood stores, which are geared toward residential consumers, don't.

We painted the field at the high school for many years. We just used regular latex house paint and it worked great. You just have to get the color you need and spray away. The hardest part is getting a stencil for the midfield logo. That may cost you. DO NOT TRY TO JUST WING IT and paint the midfield by hand! Get a stencil. We had stencils for midfield and the end zones and, though it is sometimes a pain to get centered and set up, makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the finished product.

On my way to the local sports bar to watch the Falcons get some against the Chippawas.

Good Luck and GO FALCONS!!!!!
