I think we'll be fine and I don't see an analogy to be made between Gary Blackney and Gregg Brandon. I don't think Brandon is assuming that he/we rule the conference because we went to a bowl game his first two years on the job.

I also don't think Urban Meyer "built" anything here. He got the program off of life support, but nobody builds a program in two years....

I'm honestly getting a bit tired of the skitzo nature of this forum. when we win the future is bright, when we lose we're doomed....doooooooommmmmmed.

Frankly, I'm bored as hell and looking for some new kids to play with
Great post, Flip. IMO, while there is work to do, I don't see the progam sliding back. Now I know I'm one of the most optimistic people here but frankly, the doomsday scenerio baffles me.

I don't think it's doomsday, I just don't think we'll be better than an average MAC program while the current staff is in place. Maybe the next guy will be worse, or maybe he'll be better.

I think the only way we rise to the top of the MAC consistently, instead of these damned 4-5 year swings, is if we get a BG guy that can get it done, and wants to be here long term. Forgive the analogy, but we need to find our Amstutz. Until that happens, and we find a way to get people to the games, we're going to continue to be exactly what we have been.

I think those are valid points, J4H. I am tired of the 4-5 year swings as well.

I think that has kind of been the crux of my (albeit often rambling and irate after losses  ) posts lately. I love the atmosphere and, more importantly, the people at BGSU - they are what make BG the best university in the State of Ohio. Still, if Falcon Football is going to be the type of program that we all know and believe that it can be, then I think our expectations need to change a little bit. All too often I think at non-"big time" programs, rebuilding seasons are accepted far too willingly.

Indeed, I think most people would agree that coaching not only for the moment but the future as well is a vital component of coaching, and quite frankly, there has been very little coaching for the future at BG since Urban took over. I mean, look at how utterly inexperienced we are at the skill positions on offense this year! Especially since we have been blowing out a lot of people over the past few years, one would think that we would have recievers and running backs out there getting significant time and experience in mop-up duty. A lot of our recievers have looked at times this year like they have never played a down of football before. Granted, at times they have shown flashes of why they were recruited, but it seems to me that this level of inexperience should be unacceptable to fans and coaches alike.

Now, this is going to sound strange, but I don't necessarily blame Gregg Brandon for this situation. I think the problem is bigger than Coach, and I in no way mean that to be an insult to him. I think that the problem we are facing is a cultural problem not only at BGSU, but throughout the non-BCS ranks of D1A college football. We have all seen in the past - both recent and distant - what Falcon Football is capable of. Still, we haven't been able to sustain that success for any great length of time, and neither have very many programs around the country. If there was one thing I could change about Falcon fans it would be our expectations - expect winners: we are FALCONS! I truly believe that if the culture surrounding BGSU Football, Basketball, Hockey, etc. inherently expressed continued and sustained success it would be reflected in coaches attitudes and decisions. It would become an expectation that every coaching candidate would be well aware of upon their hiring/promotion.

And honestly, right now, I don't think any of us around here really knows how to handle this kind of attitude. All too often we go overboard with our expectations (read: the constant threads in all forums about firing coaches immediately/suggesting their replacements after losses) and that, to me, is just as dangerous as accepting anything. This is something that we need to work out as a community, and I think we need to focus on it a lot more.

Now, believe me, I'm not saying that if we all woke up one day and said "we will not accept mediocre" that we would never again get mediocre. That would be an insane assertion. What I am saying is that I don't think we would find our Football program in the kind of situation that we are in now again. I really hope that this hasn't offended anyone and that it doesn't sound like some sort of doomsday sooth-saying. I intend it more to be constructive criticism than anything.

If you don't think teams go through re-building years, look at Toledo.

Or Oklahoma...Alabama....Penn State...USC...

All those programs had down years within the last decade. Hell, Oklahoma had 4 or 5 straight losing seasons before Stoops took over. Everyone knows how many people wanted to run Joe Pa outta Happy Valley just a few short years ago. Alabama? They've struggled recently. USC? 12 years of mediocre play until Pete Caroll took over.

On the Mid Major level, I believe Fresno State is only 1-6 or 1-7 this year. Marshall is way down...which I happen to love. Miami U is 1-7...first losing season in 12 years. UT is on the brink of their first losing season in 13 years or so. CMU, a very proud tradition for decades, was down for almost 10 years until now.

BG is still 4-4, 3-2 MAC with a chance to have a 6th straight winning season as well as launch into what *could* be some very good seasons down the road.

I want the Doyt packed with 25,000 every game. I want MAC titles, Bowl bids, Top 25 rankings and a chance to knock down the BCS door. I love Falcon Football like no other team in my whole life.

GO FALCONS!!! FINISH STRONG!!
