Athletic Band Auditions

For those of you not in the marching band that read the forum, this year's Athletic Band auditions will be held this Sunday, October 29th between 2 and 4-ish if I'm correct. I know the saxophone auditions are between 2 and 4 for sure and the trumpet auditions are from 2-4:15. If anyone's interested, feel free to sign up for a time! The audition piece as always is Screamer.

What a CRAPPY audition piece. That would have killed my chances of playing when I was there. I hope audition are only for placement and there are no cuts made. Thats what I loved about Athletic Band. I was not a trumpet major and did not have the best chops in the world but it was fun to play.

That's a FABULOUS audition piece. And yes, there are cuts made, just as with any other ensemble. I don't disagree with it. (Unless for some reason this year is different and there will not be cuts. I find that unlikely, but I am not there and changes may have been made.) In order to get the best sound possible, the weaker players might need to be cut. That's true with any good ensemble; it's not high school.

(Matt, I've never heard you play, so don't take that as an attack on your ability. I'm not the greatest sax player either.

So, if I played the sCreamer at the CORRECT tempo, would I be deducted points?

No offence taken Saxy. I believe in putting the best product out there but that does not necessarily happen because of cuts in the audition process. When I played in University Band under Rohr we did not have cuts, the auditions were for chair placement. Up until this year Men's Chorus did not cut. They cut this year because 140 stretched the limits of of the rehersal space a bit to far for quality work to be done. I remember some cuts happening in marching band in the trumpet section but those students were given the option to play baritone or mellophone instead and opted not to. I guess I see a big difference in an ensamble like Athletic band, whos purpose is to pump up the crowd at games, and Symphonic Band, whos purpose is so much more focused on being exposed to so much music. But thats just me I guess.

They don't cut for U-band, and it's HUGE. That I can understand. For two years, it was my only shot a sit-down band because I was no where near talented enough for the other bands.

As for marching band, they did make cuts each year I was there. (And there were a few cuts that should have been made but weren't!

) In some cases they were offered other instruments, but in others not, for varying reasons. If you can't march on the beat with a trumpet, you probably can't with a euphonium either, ya know?

I seem to recall hearing it in a sultry, grooving Quarter=76ish at one point, and I LOVED it. Need I also mention the 6/8, or 12/8 (I think) "Stripper" section that follows after where we make the traditional cut. If you could ever convince someone to play the entire tune, I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised.

BTW, I just Facebooked our Local NBC morning Weatherman, and its funny looking through the pics of him and the other broadcasters wasted. Its also odd that he's younger than me. Wierd.

Don't know if it's the time you're thinking of, but I remember in the 2004-5 season (I think), playing Screamer about that tempo with the alumni band in Anderson, courtesy Ryan Nowlin, who was directing. I've also played/heard the alternate ending too, thanks to the same guy. 8) That was only in a rehearsal, though.
