Jack Carle Editorial

Post by Warthog »

Jack Carle had a great editorial in tonight's Sentinel Tribune. He went so far as to say it was embarassing to lose to Temple and it would be a judgement call as to whether this loss or the Buffalo-Blackney loss was the worst loss in program history. He recounted how in each of the last two decades we had a new coach come in and raise the team up only for that to be short lived and followed by some terrible years. We are sitting on the edge of the cliff now. Will this team gather itself, win out, and put some confidence in the program? Or will they mail in it and send us on another downward spiral?

Wish the damn Sentinel Tribune would get on board with the digital age. I don't feel like transcribing the entire story nor do I think it will be published on bgsufalcons.com like some other S-T stories due to the critical tone of some of Carle's comments.

Man I wish the S-T was published online, too. I wonder if it's ever been explained what's holding them back from that? Hell, I might even be willing to pay for an online subscription if that's the route they needed to go.

I wrote a few semi-coherent thoughts on the program at haveyoumettony.com, but it basically comes down to the same thing. I may disagree with some of the Brandon talk that has been going on, but this team is definitely at a sink or swim point of the season. Sure, Miami(OH) and Toledo have worse records than us, but they're still Miami(OH) and Toledo. Wins over them mean something and can be pointed to as "goals" even if we were to lose to Akron. Especially heading into the Glass Bowl. And actually, the down years they're having is even more of a reason to take advantage and beat them both.

The last time each of these three teams visited the Doyt, they took it to us. Miami(OH) in '03, and Akron and Toledo last year. Many players may not have been around for the '03 MACC loss, but there are some key seniors that will let them know what that felt like. Same with '04 at Toledo. Most of them probably still remember walking off the field to a (at the time) mediocre Akron team. The Temple players noted how much the win meant because of what BG had done to them in the past. We have three games left and three measures of "revenge" to exact. If we go out and get beat, we'll deal with it then, but there is absolutely no reason to mail anything in.

Do it for yourselves, do it for your teammates, do it for your fellow students, do it for the loyal alumni, and most importantly, do it for BGSU.

Roll Along.

The Sentinel Tribune is struggling to make ends meet as are most newspapers today. Providing free online reading may be their last straw.

Don't look for it to happen anytime soon.

Oh yea...we will spin out of controll for the rest of this season. Are team just dosent have it. Huge mistakes from the exp gap we were left with this year, to retard spec teams plays. have all compounded with some other marginal play to put us here.

next year will be different...but we will be on phrobation, not bowl eligable and at the of next years winning season we will be religated to D1aa.

now...I will lose all faith in the student body, if they can not manage to turn out and rally for FOOTBALL and fill the stadium against miami.
that is what comes down to...do the students at BG want to stay in D1 or not, do they value all that D1 football has doone for BGSU and all that it can continue to do, or do want to close the era of D1 football at BGSU. The choice is thiers, and that of the comunity. If we can not fill the stadium this week, I would say lets just go to D1aa and get into the playoffs and move on.

WE ARE NOT GOING TO DROP TO D1AA.

You are becoming almost as big of a negative nuisance as Falconboy. And can you please remove the word "gay" from your location? The "upper management" politely requested this months ago. I'm sick of reading your unintelligable, uninformed garbage.

How can you possible pin this whole thing on the students? They are forced to donate close to $300.00 per semester to Athletics. With a student population of 20,000 plus that is 6 million dollars each semester that flows in from the student body. These are the same students that are working on a degree from Bowling Green. God forbid they have homework or even, gasp, class on a Tuesday night because our asshat MAC comissioner wants to become a TV whore. What about all of the pople who live in and around Bowling Green. It is in their best interests to support this team any way possible. When our athletic teams are winning the economy is stronger. I say it is much more important to have community support over student support. And to echo Bleeding Orange, please remove the word "gay" from your profile. I have made this request at least 5 times now. It really is offensive to some on this board.

Which is too bad.

I guess online reading isn't nearly as viable an option in a town like BG as it is a bigger city, where there's enough "featury" content to keep stuff fresh.

Here's a few excerpts from the story:

"There's no way to put a positive spin on this one. Saturday's 28-14 loss to Temple was utterly and totally humiliating for Bowling Green."

"'We've got to step up and face the music right now, we're not very good,' BG coach Gregg Brandon said. 'We need to do that... every coach, every player, everybody, needs to step up and be a man; throw this one in the toilet and get ready to play Akron.'"

"Brandon cited a lack of mental toughness, a lack of mental focus and a lack of concentration as big parts of BG's problems."

Carle then goes through the offense, defense, special teams, and penalties and looks at what went wrong against Temple. Then he goes on with 'The Future':

"Now the big question is, where do the Falcons go from here? With a 4-5 record and three games remaining, does the team pack it in, or play hard and find a way to win?"

"It could be easy for the team's confidence to be destroyed if things don't go well in November. A disastorous end to the season could put the program back in the dumpster."

"Now the Falcons are on the brink of another downward spiral. It's up to the players and coaches to stop the trend with a strong finish to the season."

There have been several studies and a ton of anecdotal evidence to prove that putting newspaper content on the Web does NOT hurt newspaper circulation. In fact, most newspapers have discovered that going online is one of the few ways to stem to loss of advertising revenue or, in some cases, build more revenue.

In a nutshell, there's no excuse for not being online.

Carry on.
