Heard on ESPN that Steve Mariucci was in the market again, any truth. He'd really help to attract high-level talent and rebuild a program.

And I hope he takes it because I think the Browns defensive coordinator is high on the list as well. He was an assistant there under Saban.

This could work, heres my formula:
Hire a coach that can recruit and prepare players = a team that executes = a team that competes = a team that wins = a team that wins the MAC = a team that wins bowl games = new talented recruits = student/fan/alumni support increases = more attendance = sell out crowds at games = a full stadium = more televised games = more money.

So he could be hired, saying BG couldn't afford him is like saying I can't afford college, when in the long run without college you can't afford anything.

The 2004 team finished the year ranked just outside the top 25, won a bowl game and had a QB that threw for over 10 million yards....it drew one crowd over 20,000. The 2003 team won the West and the MCB...it drew less than 10,000 for as mid seaon game against an in state rival (Kent State).

Even the 1994 team that was in the thick of things for the MAC title and was coming off of bowl wins in in 1991 and 1992 didn't sell out the Doyt.

There is and has been a disconnect between our on field resuts and attendance.

We could not possibly justify the millions it would take to get Mariucci when our gross revenues wouldn't even pay his base salary. If we sold out the Doyt for every game and played road games against OSU and Michigan we could maybe pay his base salary, but wouldn't have any money left to buy tape, socks and most importatnly, jock straps.

Gregg Brandon is our football coach. He is going to be our football coach for the forseeable future. His accomplishments here have earned him the chance to stay here and right the ship...

I actually thought Smith was a pretty good coach at Louisville...I'm honestly quite surprised to see how he's failed at MSU. He might be worth giving a second try, but he wouldn't be my first choice.

I always prefer a young up & comer type guy.

IMO, the only way BG gets to the next level, is finding a guy that can do the job, and is a BG alum or has some other very close tie to the university. If we don't think we can afford to buy out Brandon, how do we think we can afford a guy like John L. Smith or Steve Mariucci?

I don't think we could afford either of those guys...they're not even on my radar. I know we'll be with Brandon for the forseeable future, so I'm not even worrying about it at this point.

Ideally we'd find a BG alum or something that wants to be here for awhile, but I think that's probably a pipe dream.

I would much rather go through coaches like Urban Meyer, guys looking to make the next step, than settle for a mediocre coach who is happy here. It's tough to find the next great coach over and over again, but I'd prefer to try that than settle for mediocrity.
