TD Called Back

Post by Spart43 »

Here is the video that I was able to capture of the last TD that was called back.

FWIW, I think this is a normal fight for postion, the DB on the play does as much holding and pushing as does Ruben. But this video is not very clear.

Here is the top level view, not much to see here.

Here is a view from the endzone which shows the DB holding Rubens Jersey and then Ruben pushing him off of him. Its not real clear, so we can read into it what we want. :-D

These were taken from the webcast so quailty is very limited.

Spart,
Thanks for the link...I heard the game on radio and obviously, our guys announcing the game seemed to have a different viewpoint...though not as "subjective" as Steve French, (the Akron announcer)....problem is you can't see what happened PRIOR to Ruiz "pushing off" .

See you at the Miami game...hopefully two more of my friends are also coming, a total of four of us. (Will that help our attendance problems a bit?)

Yeah, you can't see much there one way or the other, but with the situation, I can't see anything horribly egregious. Of course, it isn't helped by the half-assed manner in which the ref tossed the flag 15 yards after the "infraction".

Having no idea what happened prior to the call in question, it looks to me like Ruiz gained seperation and thus a significant advantage by contacting the DB. Furthermore, he did it right in between two officials in the end zone.

Sure the timing was crappy, and sure the call isn't made much, but it was textbook offensive PI.

Agreed. From where we were sitting, it looked like both were fighting for position with no one gaining an advantage, which would have been okay, but then Ruiz got a pretty big advantage by pushing off. The call had to be made and I agree with it.

I guess I agree, too. Its not a TD without the push off. On 1470 yesterday, Coach Brandon said that he "hoped that was the kind of play where you would like the players decide."

the reason that it looks as if rueben pushes off is because the defender is holding rueben's jersey then lets go which creates the seperation, absolute BS call.

also if you look at that video, it is aparrent that AT could have ran for his 4th touchdown of the game if he wanted to, there was nobody between him and the endzone on the left side of the field.

i don't think it should have been called on play like that. that was just a feeler out tap that every reciever does on every play like that. micheal irvin used to get away with highway murder out there and they wouldnt call it. if you look at the defense back he doesnt complain to the ref at all and turns around and is mad that he got beat, that should be an indication that it shouldn't of been called.

Remember in the first half when Akron had a questionable defensive PI call on a ball that seemingly sailed over the defender and the receiver's heads as un-catchable?

We got the call in the first half, and it led to a TD drive. We didn't get the call here. Doesn't matter if it was right or wrong those things tend to even out and settle as a game/season goes on. We get some calls, we don't get others.

I will point out that both the back judge and the line judge were reaching for their flags. It's hard to assuredly say the call was incorrect. Yes it sucks they made the call at that point in the game, but there you have it.

Also, I doubt AT runs that in for a score. He is being chased from behind, there are two LB's coming from around he pile to cut off his angle and force him towards the sideline. Might have had a decent gain, but I don't think he makes paydirt.

That was an incorrect call on the pass interference in the first half. It should have been a personal foul against Akron. Contact was made after an uncatchable ball had gone over our WR's head. The Akron DB left his feet and made contact with our players's head. There was no reason for him to hit him at all, much less jump to reach his head.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I thought it then and I'll say it now:

That call was Total BS.

In the "Top View" that's me and son jumping up and down in the background...and we had a better view than both of the refs!

That is a really shatty call, if they consider that a pushoff and offensive pass interference, then they should have called it about 5 more times that game on both teams! You have to either be calling it all game, or not calling it all game. A little thing called consistency, makes the game flow much smoother!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

After watching those clips a couple times, BG got robbed. Reggie Corner, the UA DB, never looked back for the ball, IMO> And seeing it from a different angle? NO WAY should the call have been made. The ref waited at least 3-4 seconds before throwing the flag. Bad call.

Oh well, nothing we can do now. :x

Yeah Falconfreak, from where you and I (and Svillefalcon and RUIT) were sitting, it looked like a bad call, and the video backs it up. Both players were jostling for position, and the seperation was caused mostly because of the Akron player holding Ruiz's jersey and Rueben breaking free of the hold on the two steps before the jump. He did have a hand on the back of the Akron player's jersey, but just about every reciever does that on a fade route in the end zone.

The worst part about the flag was that it was 3, almost 4 seconds after Ruiz caught the ball that the ref finally threw the flag. What was he waiting for? It is my contention that the ref would not have thrown the flag if the pass had been incomplete. He waited to see if Rueben had caught the ball before throwing the flag. That's wrong. Either it's a foul or it isn't, and if the ref waits that long to throw the flag, its usually not a foul. This play was not a foul, and it could come back to cost us the MAC East Championship.

We all know DAMN WELL that if that is a touchdown, we crush Akron from then on because of the momentum we are riding at that point. We're 4-2 right now and talking about a huge game Wednesday night, not a game that barely means anything.
