Silenced
Silenced
I wonder if the FMB has ever been silenced before, or was last night the first?

I doubt it. As coach Brandon said to me in an email, "Refs in our conference lack consistency." I think the main reason it happened was because of the EMU's coach. Who knows for sure but Dr. Hayward has sent an email to the MAC Commissioner Rick Chryst already. If there is a policy about it, we will know shortly. I am pretty sure it will never happen again though.
Just for fun, here's another quote from coach, "In the mean time play loud and often!!!" At least someone wants to hear us
EDIT: I changed now to know because I can't spell

It's good to see that Dr. Hayward is speaking up and looking into this. As I understand, this was far from the first time this has happened this year. I know they said something to the combined bands at homecoming, and Carol said they had talked to her at the SEMO game too. The only difference this year is the bands location. I don't recall ever hearing about the band being warned before and certainly not being told they couldn't play for the rest of the game.

Aw, Jackie, you know Gameday wouldn't let us play cuz they were overwhelmed by us, and EMU was just jealous cuz their band isn't as loud, talented, enthusiastic, energetic, or good looking as our band.
(Note to the easily-provoked: KIDDING!!! This will NOT, I repeat NOT, turn into another debate about which school's band sucks!)

Maybe it is because of the bands location this year. This year our sound is pointed straight down the field. In years past it has only really been pointed to about north 25 yard line. It's the only thing I can think of that makes sense, but of course I'm known for not making sense.
God Bless the FMB!!!

ESPN Gameday was a little different. There was a microphone sitting right in front of us and if we played during the game, you'd hear more band than sounds on the field. I hate to say it but people watch football games not to hear the band, but to hear the hard hits and stuff like that. When a game is nationally televised like that, things have to change. EMU was just scurred because they were losing!

Go Hayward, and Brandon! I was down by the field, next to Hayward when the Ref came by and talked to her. Really bizarre, and vague. All I remember hearing was him saying "Thats enough. If you do that again, we're going to throw a flag on the band." OK......wierd. He didn't explain what "that" meant, so Hayward just kinda put the axe on the band for the last 3 min. of the game. Thats all for now, Jeff

And didn't he say something about, "I've tried to be nice about this, but...." too?
Meh?!?
Tried to be nice? I don't remember any smiles, sincere apologies or compensatory gifts....
Meh?!?

To be honest, when I was back for homecoming, I did notice that the band really pushed their cutoff. I can see where the band could have easily played during a play.
I remember cutting off the band right when the other team started to set their O. Both Jackson and Chief were inflexible and didn't push that rule.
I don't know the circumstances which prompted the action by the ref, but I have a feeling it was playing over the play.
I doubt highly it was just cheering. Anyone from my era remember the "HUT" cheer? I would conduct the band to shout "HUT" to throw the opposing team's offense off cadence.
I believe it worked ONCE.

We tried the HUT cheer down here at Bluffton for the homecoming game this year. It worked twice...until the ref walked over and yelled, "Would the fans in the stands please stop yelling hut!"
The thing was, at the time the other team's offence was running a shotgun and not using the cadence at all. 8)

They want it both ways - they want to crowd fired up, but they want to be able to hear. So what happens is they blame the band. They can't blame the fans if they are too loud. I HATE my dealings with most AD's and coaches. They think the football game is the only reason people care, and generally get pissy about stuff.jg4242 wrote:Our own coaches asked us to stop playing at our last game....with the team up 7-0 in the 4th and the other team threatening. That's when the band helps the team the most! (or so our football players tell me!)
