Exams on game night?

I was talking to my brother this weekend and I asked him if he and his friends were looking forward to the football game on Wednesday. They usually head out and do some tailgating before and since this is his first chance to do it as a 21 year old I figured it would probably be a pretty good time for him! He informs me that he can't go because his CS professor scheduled an exam for 7:30 that night. He was pretty ticked that he couldn't get out of it and go to the game.

I understand that getting your education is the most important thing and that should come first, but it wasn't like this game hasn't been on the schedule for quite some time now. My question is why does the CS professor feel the need to schedule an exam for that day. I would think any good prof would not do that. It's one thing to have class and allow the students the "decision" to skip or not, but having an exam the same night as the last home football game is a little counterproductive to every party involved isn't it? Is this happening a lot this week? This is just something to consider when student attendance is down. Students who normally would go are forced to not attend. I told my brother to protest this with his prof, but he's informed me that it is no use. What are some of the opinions on here concerning this?

Probably as CS geek he got beat up alot as a child and feels this is a CPU measuring contest and he can finally have power over a situation.

First, student attendance is not down this year, it is holding steady. It is the rest of our fan base that cannot get off their asses and come to the game. Second, this is an academic institution. Every student there, including the athletes, are working toward a degree. Exams are a part of that. This is what happens when games are scheduled during the week for whatever reason. This is the last day before Thanksgiving break, and the perfect time for an exam. Any earlier and you are starting new material before a long break. Any later and you have students students preparing for an exam when they should be spending time with family and friends. It sucks, but welcome to the real world of choices.

Right on both counts, in my opinion. I doubt if the instructor even realized there was a game that night when he did his syllabus. If you allow exceptions for football, then do other sports start entering in?

I just love the way this university works against itself all the time.

Not only do we carry the embarrassment of losing to temple, but it looks like we could also be the only D1A school to not make the attendance quota.

How could we be the obly one in teh MAC? There has got to be atleast half of our conference in the same spot we are in...which is even more sad in and of itself

Just remember that no class interferes with football, but football may interfere with a class.

What does your brother do?

He sucks it up, goes to his exam and tries his best, then he gets out to the football game.

And tell your brother that he still needs to attend classes the following week, because unlike where Matt is at now, BGSU will still be in school for another week.

Correction: he heads over to the Doyt when the gates open so he can be counted in the attendance, then leaves for the exam, and comes back to the Doyt after the exam.

That's fu**ing bullshit. All the professors I have have been encouraging their students to go to the game Wednesday night, if anything. This CS professor is the biggest jerk in BG.

Yeah that is pretty rediculous, almost sounds pre-meditated to me.
However i have class from 6-715 the night of the toledo game...needless to say i will not be in attendance(class that is). He's asian, and we asked him if he was still going to have class for the football gmae and he didn't quite comprehend what football was and why we wanted to go watch it haha.

What CS prof is giving the exam on game night?

It cannot be Sub. His sport is basketball, but he doesn't miss a game of that, so he's cool with avoiding sporting events. The rest of 'em are a crapshoot though...they're mostly geeks that wouldn't figure to care.

What's more is that most of the class are also likely geeks that couldn't care less.
