Thats a slippery sloap to go down. There will always be that big event some will be wanting everything to stop for. If we close up for a football game then why not a basketball game, or hockey, or dance marathon? Where do we draw the line? Welcome to decision people have to make every day. What is more important, a football game or your academic career? I would hope, as a proud alumni of this institution, that it would be the academic career. That will serve you MUCH better in the future than being able to say you were at the Miami game in 2006. There is a sign in the Jimmy John's here in Valparaiso that is appropriate. Just because others do it doesn't mean we should follow suit.Kaleena08 wrote:Sidney Ribeau (or Sid Rib as I like to say) should have shut down shop at the university for the one day. Other schools do it, so we should too.
This is an institution of higher learning. There are a number of people that attend here and work here that do not follow Falcon athletics. That is their preference. Learning goes on while football is being played.

We don't have to follow everything other schools do. I am just saying that it's not like it has never been done before so it isn't a big deal. I know our academics should come first but cancelling or missing one class will not destroy your grades. I understand that not everyone is into sports, but this is a huge game. It's like when they close down streets for fairs and stuff...not everyone goes to those but they have to find alternate routes to drive on just because other people are going. The University benefits from the profits, and perhaps even new students who would want to come here after experiencing such an event. And if they wanted to, they could cancel classes for other things too. Why do we need 3 weeks off for Winter Break? Use those days to cancel days through the semester for events. If it means that much to the University to get people to go, they should make it avaliable to all.

I think the thing you are missing is the fact that the department has your money even if you cannot or do not go. They want to make as much money off of those who are not already paying. That is why this push is so important. This is not about the students at all, it is about selling as many tickets as possible. The students are just the icing on top, not the cake itself. That is sad, but it is the truth.

It's a Wednesday night class. Are there even Wednesday night classes next week (Thanksgiving break)?? So the guy schedules an exam for the next week. Then all of a sudden he's a bad prof because he schedules an exam two days after a long weekend. Or he pushes it back another week and suddenly you have one week to cram three weeks in before the final exam.
I agree that it's a major university event, and would be cool if students could get to it, but calling this guy out for not cancelling the exam is a bit crappy, IMO.

Each student can make their own decision on whether or not they want to attend the game or go to class. But missing an exam for a class is extremely costly.Kaleena08 wrote:I know our academics should come first but cancelling or missing one class will not destroy your grades.
I know that when I taught Oreintation, I had the expectation that you would attend each and every class. Attendance was 225 points (5 points for each class - three days a week) of the expected 1700 points. If you were not present, you did not get the five points for the class - NO MATTER WHAT THE REASON, because if you were not present you were absent. And my syllabus had the quiz on the Monday BEFORE Thanksgiving on it (so no surprise there).
Also, if you had perfect attendance, then you did not take the final examination (because you had been to every class so you obviously knew all of the material - NO, I did not have that in my syllabus).

I'm not saying that you should skip an exam. If it is just a regular old class and IF you can afford to miss it, go ahead. If you have to go, you have to go. But if you can miss a day or to, why not use them?
Also, students do play a factor in our attendance deal. They may not be the bulk of it, but they/we will definantly play a part in it. Trust me, they definantly are trying to get out to the students. If no students show up, think about how many people that would drop off of the attendance. That is why I spent all morning putting flyers on windshields...

As far as skipping an exam to attend the game tomorrow night, I will be one of them. BUT it's due to the fact that I have to be there because of FMB and it has been approved by my instructor. In no way should anyone who values their education skip an exam or even a class to attend the game. I do agree however that if it isn't a time constraint, all students should at least go to the Doyt enter the stadium to be counted then go to their class/exam.
