Exposure?! Please!

Post by hammb »

Alright guys, I'm posting from a slowass $10/ a day WiFi connection, but I'm posting nonetheless.
I just wanted to voice my opinion about the so-called "EXPOSURE" that these weeknight games give to the MAC. In a word? PATHETIC.

Last Sunday I went to the ESPNZone in NY-NY for the NFL games. It is a sweet environment with some big screens, and I was even able to score a recliner to kick back and watch the games. So, I figured I'd head over there for tomorrow's game as well, it was such a nice place. Well, I get there and the big room with the huge TVs (and recliners) is closed for a private party. No big deal, I say, so I head to the bar, and order a beer. I got there at about 3:30, thinking the game was at 4:00, but it was actually at 7:30. So I chill, drink my beer and watch sportscenter. Then 7:00 comes and all the TVs start bouncing around to new stations. All of them have basketball & hockey games on, so I ask which TV will have the football game? Well, it was designated as their #11 feed and was only being shown on one of the small screens in the aforementioned big (closed) room. I immediately cashed out and figured I'd try the sportsbook at MGM (best book on the strip, IMO).

I get there and they've got ESPN2 still on some of the plasmas so I figure they'll at least have the game on. Cool, I figured they would because people bet these games no matter who's playing. I was elated that when the game started we even got the sound. About 15 minutes in I was immediately hoping they'd mute the sound. My god it was AWFUL. I was forced to sit through a 3 and a half hour commercial for the OSU-Michigan game. I hope a blimp crashes on that game and the whole stadium burns just because I'm sick of hearing about it. I'm sure that part has all been touched on before.

I just wanted to speak out and say not only was the game more about OSU-Michigan than it was BG-Miami (same goes for the BSU-UT game), the game wasn't even shown at one of the biggest, nicest sportsbars I've ever been to. If not for how many betters football draws, I likely would not have even been able to find the game.

Luckily we have the worst coaching staff in college football, so I was able to make some cash on the game. Bet BG to cover the -2.5 for the first half, then bet against BG when the halftime line comes a pick 'em. Bastards took the O/U off the board before I could get my bet in after seeing the conditions though :(

Checking the radar around 5 PM, I was still able to lay big on the under. Lock of the century.

I almost took Miami moneyline, but ended up just taking them to cover.

And I think it's time we told ESPN to go flock themselves. Put our games back on Saturdays, and screw these nationally televised jokes.

if espn asks us to play at 7 on wednesday, i think our only question should be: a.m. or p.m.?

I agree with Schadenfreude here. I know for a fact that some of the players on UT's roster got interested in UT because of ESPN. Several players have told me personally that they were turned onto UT early in the recruiting process because of seeing us on ESPN a lot.

I sent an email to Greg Christopher last night after I got home (at 1:30 in the morning) expressing my thoughts about these weeknight games. I think the decision is ultimately up to Rick Chryst, but I'm sure the ADs have a big pull. These games have drawn very poorly in actual attendance this year and some of the games have been comical (NIU/UT fog bowl and BG/Miami mud bowl) to watch. The games this week have been a backdrop for OSU/Michigan talk. I'm tired of spending vacation time to watch a game in miserable conditions when I have to drive home immediately afterwards and work the next day. If the MAC starts drawing good crowds and builds good football programs, ESPN will come calling for meaningful coverage. Right now, we're simply the better option between football and dominos.

On the Miami pre-game radio show, Coach B was interviewed by a BG grad, Greg Waddell. Coach talked about how very important it was to be on TV. He said he'd play at 2 am if it was on TV. He said TV exposure was important and that it has really helped the program in a number of areas.

"Now people know where Bowling Green is. It's in Ohio not Kentucky. Uh, well, there is one in Kentucky too but it's been a big help" or something like that was one thing he said.

He also mentioned the conference needs to re-examine these schedules to make sure they are not doing a disservice to the kids academically.

This is a tough question. I understand the value of being on TV, but I also understand that it makes building a fan base (gate wise) difficult over time.

The weather could have been like that on Saturday, too.

But, I used a little vacation time to make it to the Doyt for the game.

All I know that if it was a Saturday game I would have been there, ESPN or not, to support BG Football. I'm not able to make it to Toledo either because of the weeknight game. Needless to say for personal and selfish reasons, I'm not a fan of weeknight games. i would really need to be convinced that watching last nights game would help in recruiting. Here's the sales pitch:

G.B. "So, do you like mud?"
Potential Recruit "Ummmmmm?"
G.B. "How do you feel about wind and flat land?"
Potential Recruit "I think I have to go call a Sun-Belt team now."

Hell I wasn't even aware that we played last night. I did see there was a football game being played behind all of the graphics and interviews about michigan and ohio state but I didn't see what two teams were playing in the background.

Yeah. Sorry about that. The game got in the way of the graphics.

I guess it was a great recruiting tool...for OSU and UM. They basically got a 3 hour commercial for their programs.

Go here http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/sto ... act/espntv. I did.

I am APPALLED at the coverage of the BG-Miami game. I understand that it is not the most important game this week to most people, but I was insulted by the fact that there was more talk of Saturday's game than there was commentary of the game that was ACTUALLY BEING TELEVISED. Gradually, MAC fans are growing angry with ESPN's deplorable MAC coverage. We deserve more. And tell Holtz that its the MAC, not the MAC Conference. That's redundant and unprofessional. And he should know; he went to Kent.

i detest osu. but i must admit saturday's game truly is a game of the century. i wasn't happy about that level of disney synergy at our expense, but it was what it was. i doubt coverage of next week's toledo game will be nearly that carried away.

also, i dstinctly remember hearing holtz say "m.a.c." at one point, which was wonderfully old school.

I'm split on this. I want the TV coverage for the MAC but after watching the game today on tape? Even Mrs. Freak said she got sick of all the OSU-UM talk. I had to use vacation time to get to the game and took a sick day today...that shitty weather last night gave me quite a cold. I will be using more vacation time next week for the UT game. I think I'd rather see BG play on saturdays more.

You right. Next week it will be a three hour debate over who should be #2 in the BCS.
