Exposure?! Please!
What BG/MAC needs to do is sign up with ONN or some other regional network in each state. The MAC is a regional conference. There is no need for national coverage at the rate we are getting it. Attendance would be better on Saturday's and we'd still be on tv. When the ESPN's of the world come calling when we have top 15 teams again, make them pay out the ass if they want to cover the game....on Saturday.

ONN is just a suggestion. SportsTime Ohio needs some programming.Tricky_Falcon wrote:I don't know if ONN will be any better. I mean the BG vs. Miami hockey game was tape delayed an hour because they had to show post game coverage of ohio state.

How many Hs football recruits were there?hammb wrote:Alright guys, I'm posting from a slowass $10/ a day WiFi connection, but I'm posting nonetheless.
I just wanted to voice my opinion about the so-called "EXPOSURE" that these weeknight games give to the MAC. In a word? PATHETIC.
Last Sunday I went to the ESPNZone in NY-NY for the NFL games. It is a sweet environment with some big screens, and I was even able to score a recliner to kick back and watch the games. So, I figured I'd head over there for tomorrow's game as well, it was such a nice place. Well, I get there and the big room with the huge TVs (and recliners) is closed for a private party. No big deal, I say, so I head to the bar, and order a beer. I got there at about 3:30, thinking the game was at 4:00, but it was actually at 7:30. So I chill, drink my beer and watch sportscenter. Then 7:00 comes and all the TVs start bouncing around to new stations. All of them have basketball & hockey games on, so I ask which TV will have the football game? Well, it was designated as their #11 feed and was only being shown on one of the small screens in the aforementioned big (closed) room. I immediately cashed out and figured I'd try the sportsbook at MGM (best book on the strip, IMO).
I get there and they've got ESPN2 still on some of the plasmas so I figure they'll at least have the game on. Cool, I figured they would because people bet these games no matter who's playing. I was elated that when the game started we even got the sound. About 15 minutes in I was immediately hoping they'd mute the sound. My god it was AWFUL. I was forced to sit through a 3 and a half hour commercial for the OSU-Michigan game. I hope a blimp crashes on that game and the whole stadium burns just because I'm sick of hearing about it. I'm sure that part has all been touched on before.
I just wanted to speak out and say not only was the game more about OSU-Michigan than it was BG-Miami (same goes for the BSU-UT game), the game wasn't even shown at one of the biggest, nicest sportsbars I've ever been to. If not for how many betters football draws, I likely would not have even been able to find the game.
Luckily we have the worst coaching staff in college football, so I was able to make some cash on the game. Bet BG to cover the -2.5 for the first half, then bet against BG when the halftime line comes a pick 'em. Bastards took the O/U off the board before I could get my bet in after seeing the conditions though
At home, where they have likely three sports channels they were likely watching football while they did their hw.
I get your point, but I am not sure if I should be thrilled that we are giving scholarships to guys who call the coaches and tell them how good they are. Shouldn't it be the other way around? I mean, coaches identifying players they like and we go after them?Flipper wrote:We would not have signed Anthony Glaud. He saw us on ESPN and contacted the caoching staff. theres 50 states and 100's of HS teams in each. Honestly, if I were Rick Chryst, I would tell ESPN to take their contract and shove it, and if they protested legally, simply show game tapes in court. Provided that members of ther jury are not hopelessly retarded, we would win, hands down.

I guess its time to wade into this......
From 1979 to 1983, I can count on one hand the number of televised BG football games............ actually one finger. BG v Miami in Oxford (1981). A group of us went uptown to watch the game. The game was only on because of the NFL strike, which lasted just long enough for the BG game to get on TV.
I do recall seeing the California Bowl on ESPN (on replay only - at 6:30 in the morning on a weekday
) during Christmas break my senior year (Dec. 1982).
You know what...... I am VERY happy to be able to watch MAC games mid-week on the old teley.
Do I wish they could have stopped talking about The Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College/Michigan game..... abso-fricking-lutely. Does it make me want to never see BG or Miami on national television again..... no. Because the truth is that there are plenty of morons out there who would tune in to watch an unranked Big Ten team play before they would ever tune in to watch a #15 or #10 ranked MAC team (as in 2003). So this is the deal we have and I happy for the coverage.
I'm pretty sure that the other old-timers on this board would relate the same story about TV coverage during the "middle ages".
BTW- I got a call last night from my dad's best friend. He called me to see if I went to the game. He watched it and was truly excited to talk about the game...... go figure..... maybe this ESPN deal is actually working for us - recruit-wise and fan wise. My friend's comment.... "I wish they would have shut up about the OSU/Michigan game....... we don't live under a rock, and i wanted to know more about BG and Miami." I wanted to bestow an honorary degree on the gentleman right then and there.

I'm saying that the kids that are worthwhile get noticed. They don't have to hire an "agent" to send out recruiting tapes and contact schools to tell them how good the kid is.MatelaAntwerp wrote:theres 50 states and 100's of HS teams in each. Glaud is from new Jersey...we don't recruit that state because we don't have the $$ to be everywhere. Unless the kid or a coach is going to let us know about a player in states we don't cover, we won't know about them.Warthog wrote:I get your point, but I am not sure if I should be thrilled that we are giving scholarships to guys who call the coaches and tell them how good they are. So far as I know, the only way we were going to find Glaud is if he contacted us. He liked what he saw on ESPN and sent us a tape.. ..
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
I am not disagreeing with the fact of how we ended up getting Glaud. My point is that if he doesn't see us on ESPN and contact us, we still would have recruited another QB in the states we cover. It's just as possible that we missed a kid in Ohio (can you say Nate Davis (I know, academic issues, just saying)) who could be just as good as Glaud might be. For every kid outside of our recruiting area that we get because of exposure on ESPN, there is probably another 100 that we could have recruited in our territory anyway.

I disagree...we have enough of a network here in our territory (Ohio, Mich, Illinois, ) that we'll have a handle on the kids that are near us. Nate Davis was on BGSU's radar, so was AAron Opelt. The staff decided they didn't wnt to go after them. Glaud was one of those kids like Jacob Hardwick, Thomas James and I think, Sean Ellis, that were unknown to us and would have remained unknown to us if we didn't get a phone call.
I don't think the staff is overlooking anyone locally to sign kids from outside our usual recruiting area. I think the notoriety we're getting from ESPN is giving us a chance to get kids that are deemed better than the options we have locally.
FWIW...I read somewhere last year that Glaud was an option for Iowa if they didn't sign Arvill Nelson or Rick Stanzi. Stanzi and Nelson were QB's from Ohio that BG offered. I think it's great that our staff had a chance to look at Opelt, Davis and Glaud as options when Nelson and Stanzi went elsewhere.

OK, let me try a different angle. If Glaud (and I am just using him for exemplary purposes, this is no why an attempt to comment on his talents) is such a talented player, why are the schools in his 'local' area overlooking him that he has to look to a school like BG for a scholarship? He attended camps at Rutgers, Syracuse and Maryland. If a player attends camps at three schools like that and still has to be out looking for someone to give him a scholarship, I'm not sure that is the player that I want us going after.
The only other interest Thomas James had was for South Carolina State. Hardwick and Bullock's profile doesn't list any other schools. Those appear to be guys that are outside our normal recruiting area that we have picked up. Again, I am not commenting specifically on these guys. Just saying that we could probably get the same level of talent by going harder after kids in our own backyard.
