I've been consistent when talking about the schedule. I was one of the few who defended it when it was first released. People on this board hate it when others badmouth BG or assume that BG isn't any good simply because BG isn't a "big" school or because BG doesn't play in a "big" conference. We should be careful not to do the same to other teams. Furman is a good team and certainly not one of the worst teams BG will play this year.
Also, I think South Alabama is supposed to be the best team BG has played to date and one of the best BG plays OOC.

Let's be real with ourselves. If Furman wins 10 games this season, it will be a successful season for them. It's not like they are some mid-major powerhouse.

Furman will easily win 10 games. They are 3 and 1 and lost to Clemson by 10. They are picked 2nd in their division (behind Charleston) in the Southern Conference. They had some solid players and they should have a very successful season if 10 wins is your definition of success.

I'll be real and honest since I live in a city that has two Southern Conference basketball teams and plays host to the SoCon Basketball Tourney. Furman is for real. They were picked for second in the SoCon behind a very talented College of Charleston team that returns two preseason all-conference players led by first year head coach Bobby Cremins. Furman actually received a first place vote as well as two players on to the all-conf. squad, so they aren't some jalopy squad from the backwoods.
In the same way I dislike Big 10 and Big XII fans belittling the M.A.C., it dissappoints me that someone from our school would put down Furman without realizing that they are actually a good team from a decent conference.
The SoCon in many years has had success in the NCAA's with teams like CoC, Davidson and others putting the fear of God in opponents and sometimes beating them. Davidson scared the crap out of many of your Buckeyes before the the Thad Five arrived, just a year gao. The SoCon is traditionally a very good "small" conference.

Well, that may be so. However, the way I see it is, whenever you have a team come onto your home floor and beat you, its bad. Especially if its a team from outside the schools that in football are Division I-A. Now if we were playing George Mason or Wichita State, or UNC Wilmington, or somebody like that, I might give it a pass. But if we want to be a good/successful basketball team this season, teams like Furman are teams we need to beat. I think its insulting that we keep losing to teams like Wright State, etc. We should have beaten Wright State with one hand tied behind our backs.

Mostly all MAC teams would of get waxed AT HOME by G.M. or Wichita St. or UNC Wilmington so give it as much as a pass as you want. The truth is Furman is a good ball club & we are a young ball club playing our second D1 game together. Give it time. OOC doesn't matter anyways. It's not like were fighting for a at large bid right now. Everyone knows that only 1 MAC school will get in the dance, so who cares. Let Dakich get his s**t figured out and come MAC season if we start losing you can ride him. Until then, lay off. Let the team figure out who they are.

Amen! Thank you sir.
As a life long BG fan, I don't say things like, "well, Furman has a good team this year." after losing to them at home. I have more pride than that.
I've said it earlier and I will say it again. We are a MUCH better team than Furman. Even watching the game yesterday, it was so obvious. Our guys couldn't play aggressive offensive and drive to the basket because they would be getting grabbed and mugged all over the place without a call, and most of the time, the bucket was not made. If the same situation occurred on the opposite end of the court, you can BET something was going to be called on our guys if the Furman player who drove to the basket was even touched. And again I will very rarely point a finger at an official, but there were a handful of things that went on that were pretty suspect and unless you were at the game, you couldn't possibly know how frustrating it was to see our team playing aggressively and playing really very well but being unable to play the game to their ability. The team's performance, or what they were permitted to do, was really very impressive and a significant improvement from last season.
Also, I realize that foul shots were equal. Early in the 2nd half, fouls were extremely lobsided. Team fouls were 10-2 on BG. Don't you think it's odd that BG somehow racked up 10 team fouls in the first 7 minutes of the half and not another sinle one for the final 13 minutes? They spent the rest of the time calling Furman for little ticky tack team fouls instead of the big stuff (like mobbing our guys.) I SO wish all you doubters would have shown up, because you would have felt the same frustration and saw what I mean (and thank you to those who are backing me up on this. I don't pretend to be some basketball expert, but I know what I see, I know what fouls look like, and that game was NOT fair.)

This is all I'll say about "fairness". Good teams overcome adversity, and bad teams whine about it. I hate nothing more than hearing fellow fans complain about officiating. Everybody gets hosed now and then, but it all evens out in the end. Furman was 4 points better than we were on that particular day. Maybe we'll improve and make some noise in the MAC, and maybe we won't. I just hope Dakich gets a little more sane with his personnel by the time conference play rolls around.
We overcame it again and again, and every single time we pulled it close and went on a good run, we got hosed again a few times and all of a sudden, we were back down 10 points again. I was proud of the guys that we were able to get it even that close again. They didn't just lay down and take it: they fought back. I'm pretty sure this is where I don't fit into the sports world with all the guys. I am very positive and try to see the good in everything, whereas a lot of sports fans I encounter, definitely including here, is so negative all the time. I still post because I'm a fan too and I have my own thoughts, opinions, and contributions to the conversation.
And I really wish you'd listen to me and the 5 times so far that I have said that it is RARE for me to be so completely frustrated with an officiating team or a single ref that I will actually say something hear and call him out.

If we were even a slightly better team than Furman right now we would have beat them, right? Your statement doesn't really make sense since the two teams just played.
I'm not getting on here and making excuses for teams that knock us of. I am just saying that when you look at our OOC schedule Furman is not a team be lumped in with Central Arkansas (isn't that where Scottie Pippen went?) and Michigan Tech.
Furman is of the class of UNC-Wilmington or Northern Iowa or Valpo.

The refs already disliked Dakich because they thought he was too Bobby Knight-ish, and it only got worse when he publicly called for the resignation of the MAC Officiating Director (which he later apologized for). We'll never get a fair shake from the refs because of this and it's a shame.
