I misread it too. But as I learned a long time ago, sarcasm and humor doesn't always convert well to the written word.
Here's to our Falcon Hockey team, their coaches and staff. Yes, you may have a short bench this weekend, and yes, your hearts may be a bit heavy, but you have what it takes to step up to the plate (face off circle) and overcome all of this and sweep Crazy Frank and his Lakers this weekend. I will be listening from Florida and cheering you all the way.
Go Falcons!! Sweep the Lakers.

Yeah, it was poor judgement on my part, it certainly didn't come out the way I had intended it to. It was one of those things I would have said while rolling my eyes. And no doubt, sometimes a meaning gets lost or translated much, much differently when it is written and not spoken. I'm glad you all understand what I was trying to say and what exactly I meant by it.
I'll be the first to admit, I am not the biggest hockey fan on this board. I'm am, however, one of the biggest BG football and basketball fans you'll ever meet! Hockey is really a sport I didn't really pay much attention to until I got to BG. I always attended games in college because friends of mine were going, but it pretty much was sparked because my roommate for three years at BG played club hockey at BG. He pretty much got me more into the sport by talking about it and got me more interested in going to the games. I had a lot of fun and have even asked my financee if she would like to go back to BG and see some games (she lives in Cleveland). She said yes. But rest assure, she's already been back for her share of BG football and basketball games over the years! I guess a few hockey games couldn't hurt her.

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Give your heads a shake.
We all need to think about what an average male college student does on a Friday night. If these boys weren't athletes it would not be an issue. Although their behaviour is not acceptable, perhaps we should not be so quick to judge as we do not know the whole story and HAVE NOT even seen the picture. We are all intelligent enough to know that the media can distort any story to increase publicity and dramatic effects.
As far as Pooch is concerned, I personally think he should not have released any of the names of the players...really, what good does that do? The incident occurred two years ago, and obviously they are already being punished. Dragging their names and reputations through the dirt for a stupid mistake is what is really unacceptable.
Just to add a little more gossip...Pooch has not talked to the players involved enough to hear their side of the story. He released all of their names without hearing about each individuals involvement in the episode. Shame on you Pooch.
We need to stand behind our players. GO BGSU!

Also regarding Paluch's releasing of the names of the players. Kevin Gordon is the reporter who EXCLUSIVELY covers Falcon Hockey. If you think he didn't know who most of the players were in that picture, think again. He has covered these kids since before they came here and would know who they were. If Paluch DIDN'T identify them in an officialy capacity, it would look like he is trying to cover up the incident, which would be FAR WORSE for everyone. I really doubt if Paluch had much choice in all of this. This went from being a "hockey" incident to being a "university/athletic department" incident immediately. I do understand how people and players must feel (as I have talked with most of them), but unfortunately this took on a life of its own (no thanks to Gordon's constant repeating of the incident in the paper) with it went over the AP wire. Sorry to rant, but I feel VERY strongly about this whole incident, how it was handled, and the effect it has had on the seven players, the rest of the team, the coaches and the parents.
Time to put this to rest. A statement should be coming soon from the AD, so this can be done and over with and we can move past all of this.
GO FALCONS!!
BEAT THE IRISH!!!

If Paluch had not released the names of those athletes Kevin Gordon would have immediatley accused the program of a cover up which would have been much, much worse. The story would have hit the papers with the athletes names that Gordan could identify (which would have been most, if not all of them) and the program would have taken a huge, huge nosedive. Gordon would have wallowed in it like a pig in sh--. As it is, Paluch and Krebs have let the student judiciary system take initial control of the incident, which, in my view, is the best thing they could have done. If that system finds no real fault then what else needs to be done? I'm sure if more punishment is deemed warranted after the process, it will be handed out. To that end, I believe that Paluch didn't need to ask questions of the athletes involved.....the report from the judiciary system should tell him all that he needs to know. In my view his job is to coach the players that he has to work with in order to prepare for the next game and try to keep the distractions to a minimum.

Obviously the university had to be involved and the names of the players released to those involved in the case. I just think that because Pooch is so respected in the community he could have worked a little magic and kept their names out of the press.
I just hope this is all over with soon so that we can have our whole team back on the ice kicking some butt!

This is going to come out wrong, but einstein, please help me understand how the names could have been hidden?
You don't just "sit" 7 of your better players and nobody notice...Coach did what he had to do, now lets support that decision and his coaching ability. I trust the guys will be back on the ice as soon as justice allows.

Re: Give your heads a shake.
This is an issue whether these students are athletes or not. Racial/ethnic slurs were involved. These are BGSU students. This is a BGSU issue, not a hockey team issue.lindylou wrote:If these boys weren't athletes it would not be an issue.
You're right - he did not have to release the names. But since the writer of the story knew the players involved, they would have been named anyway.lindylou wrote:As far as Pooch is concerned, I personally think he should not have released any of the names of the players....
The players are responsible for their names being dragged through the mud. And what is really UNACCEPTABLE is that these students were involved in an incident where a racial/ethnic slur was involved by individuals that represent the university.lindylou wrote:The incident occurred two years ago, and obviously they are already being punished. These students have not been punished - all that has happened to them is they have not been allowed to particpate in two hockey games while an investigation is taking place. Had they not mugged for the camera, chances are they would be playing while this investigation is happening. Punishment is not being allowed to attend school. Punishment is having your grant-in-aid revoked.
Please do not gossip.lindylou wrote:Just to add a little more gossip...
The matter has been forwarded to Student Life for a disciplinary review. The Athletic Department (AD Krebs and Coach Paluch) are doing exactly what they should be doing - letting the appropriate persoonel conduct an impartial investigation in the matter and decide if charges and hearings are warranted.lindylou wrote:Pooch has not talked to the players involved enough to hear their side of the story. NO - Shame on you lindylou! It sounds as if you condone their actions.lindylou wrote:Shame on you Pooch.....

Those days of "working a little magic" are LONG GONE...as they should be. And if Paluch did try to "work a little magic" and keep their names out of the press (which was NOT going to happen), the respect that he has from the community would have been very tarnished. Paluch is the MOST upstanding guy you will ever have the privilege of meeting. No way would he try to "work a little magic." He would handle it the way you would expect him to, with Paul Krebs standing right there by his side.lindylou wrote:I just think that because Pooch is so respected in the community he could have worked a little magic and kept their names out of the press.

I cannot fault the coach or the administration about the handling of this. Since the alleged slurs weren't made public, I'm also in no position to have an opinion about that. Those who are making the decisions have my support, and I don't need an explanation when the judgement comes.
Of greater concern is the motive of the person or persons who chose to send the picture to news outlets. Sure seems to me that it was not to do anything but harm the players, team, and University. This is where I hope justice will prevail, preferably vigilante style.

All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.
I can't, honestly, fault the press too much. They could have very easily gone ahead with the story without contacting the athletic department or coaching staff first. (Knowing Gordon he probably wanted to do just that.) I can, however, fault the Sentinal (aka Kevin Gordon) for repeating the same thing over and over and over again. In case you missed it the first time....here it is again!!!! Gordon will get as much mileage out of this crap as he can.
Everyone here must remember that this photo was sent to the Sentinal, the Blade, AND to Sidney Ribeau. There was absolutely NO magic that could have been done to keep this under wraps even if Paluch would have been inclined to do so (which I don't believe he ever would. If nothing else, Paluch will always take full responsibility for his and his team's actions.). The players are adults....as such they have to learn how to take responsibility for their own actions. Stupid is as stupid does.
