Brandon expects a three-way competition in the spring at QB

Brandon expects a three-way competition in the spring at quarterback, as starter Anthony Turner was inconsistent. He will also look at Tyler Sheehan, who played in four games, and Anthony Glaud.
"Whoever the Bowling Green quarterback is, I'm asking that kid to put us in position to win a championship and go to a bowl game," Brandon said. "In the spring, they're all going to get an opportunity to compete and win a job."
thats good, now we will be able to watch Tyler or Glaud win the job because turner doesnt have it.

Why is Turner even in the running? The occasional good play can't make up for an entire game of poor performance. If AT were only a sophomore this year, then maybe he could get another chance at the spot, but this was his junior year and I saw very little improvement from last year to this year, and even less, if any at all, improvement throughout the season. Its been like watching a kid who doesn't exactly know what to do, instead of a young man with a grasp of the game.
The competition should be between Sheehan and Glaud.

FWIW, AT was a RS Sophomore this year.

I think he meant he was a junior as in he had three years of practices, being around the system, etc.Bleeding Orange wrote:FWIW, AT was a RS Sophomore this year.

I guess whoever will be the BG QB will also have the power to fire the Head coach or at the very least make half time adjustments, play calling adjustments, ST adjustments, be able to get fans in seats, be able to motivate players and keep them out of trouble. That is going to be one good QB.edr4225 wrote:

Yeah...we're officially at the tipping point where the criticism of the coaches has become ridiculous.
Must every Brandon interview include some type of self flagellation? Should he preface every answer by saying "I should have been fired a long time ago, but going forward..."
Maybe he should simply say "How cares who plays QB? I'm such a lousy coach that there's no way in hell we're going to win"
How anyone can find fault with him stating he hopes one of the three QB's progresses enough to play at a championship level is beyond me....he didn't say QB was our only problem...he didn't say better QB play would solve all our problems...he simply said he hoped that we'd develop a QB that can lead us to a championship.
And yes...given the fact that AT played pretty well at times last year, I think he deserves to be in the hunt for the starting job. To suggest otherwise is silly.

Re: Brandon expects a three-way competition in the spring at
The QB is the leader of the team. The only thing on this list he has absolutely no hand in is the special teams. Most QBs do a lot of audibles at the line which would help with the play calling. The QB should be able to inspire his teammates. QBs have to constantly to adjust to the defense evolving in front of them (making him have a big hand in half time adjustments as well). Right now we don't have a QB with any of these and that's why they aren't any good. I guess what I'm saying is that we don't need an amazing QB, we just need a decent QB and maybe a lot of these problems will go by the wayside.Globetrotter wrote:I guess whoever will be the BG QB will also have the power to fire the Head coach or at the very least make half time adjustments, play calling adjustments, ST adjustments, be able to get fans in seats, be able to motivate players and keep them out of trouble. Flipper, all I want him to do is just once say, "I F***ed UP!"Flipper wrote:Yeah...we're officially at the tipping point where the criticism of the coaches has become ridiculous.
.
I want him to admit that it was his fault our recruiting forced us to play so many freshman in one season.
I want him to admit that it is his fault proper emphasis is not put on special teams play.
I want him to admit that it is his fault we have gone from one of the premiere teams in the MAC to an also ran in a mere 4 years!
Then I want to hear his plans for FIXING it! We're stuck with him for at least one, if not 2 more years. I'd gain a little bit of satisfaction if he'd just admit that he's made mistakes in the past few years and tells us how he's going to repair the damage.
Instead we here that the recruiting was damaged by Urban's earlier departure. We get excuses that the reason our kick coverage sucked was because our kicker couldn't kick out the endzone. We continually here this was a rebuilding year and that he knew we'd suck because we were too young and playing players not ready to play.
That's more of the same, and it's a pisspoor way to run a football program, if you ask me. I keep hearing from the most optimistic among us that they thing Brandon is going to grow into a great head coach. I ask you, if the guy never admits he made a mistake how does anyone expect him to improve? It's those expectations that are ridiculous. This coaching staff needs to step back and figure out where they've went wrong and make strides to correcting those problems, instead all we hear is excuse after excuse. How does anyone expect them to improve if they refuse to acknowledge the fact that THEY, not just the players, are the ones that need to improve?

I'll go as far as to say that Brandon at least establishes some degree of expectation he must not be accountable for. Granted he pre-emptively puts the results on the QB's shoulders by saying he must put the team into position to win a title. But by even saying they should, he implies it can be done. Thus it is being said to us all: this shouldn't have happened, and should occur next year.
I wonder if he has had his post season "evaluation" with the AD just yet. I hope the AD isn't shy to provide expectations of better things to come.

I did not intend for it to be taken that way. Of course he does have to give coach speak all the time. That is why it is coach speak. And I think Hammb is correct that what we need to be hearing is "this is what is wrong, this is how I want to go about fixing it."Flipper wrote:Yeah...we're officially at the tipping point where the criticism of the coaches has become ridiculous.

As for what I intended to say, I intended to say that no QB will be able to do the things that I listed so no QB by himself can take this team to a championship. The coaching is too much of an albatross. I don't fault Brandon for what he said. I fault Brandon for what he is and what he does not appear to be doing. My fault. I should have read the climate in hear better.

And to think RWT called me an idiot........
You're an idiot. The kick coverage scheme was to kick the ball short so it would be easier to cover. Against Miami he was trying to keep his cleats clean. - Redwingtom
The staff is also looking at junior college kickers to handle kickoffs and give some competition to Sean Ellis. "We're not even talking about kickoff coverage if our kicker gets the ball into the end zone or out of the back of the end zone," Brandon said. "Our punter and kicker are going to be good players. I don't want to invest more scholarships in those positions right now. Rojas will develop. I think he'll be OK. Ellis will too. He's just got to grow up, mature, get stronger." Both kickers, true freshmen, will visit a sports psychologist in the offseason.

If you don't think Ellis was being told to pop those balls up, you're nuts. He can kick it to the 5, no problem. We're just incapable of covering those.
Ellis was the smallest part of a huge problem that Brandon can't address. He'd rather blame players than actually fix it.
Roll Along!
