Orel Hershiser and the HOF

Orel is again on the Hall of Fame ballot this year after he received more than 5% of the vote in 2006 (11.2%), which is required to be eligible for the next ballot. Orel doesn't seem to have a shot in hell to make it this year, especially with locks in Ripken and Gwynn being on this year's ballot as well as all of the talk about McGwire. Orel seems to have been lost in all of the hoopla about these three, but perhaps Orel will be able to gain some momentum for a real run at the Hall in the next year or two.

I don't know about y'all, but Albert Belle is looking like quite the candidate.

Seriously, how the hell is he even in consideration!

We could see the all-steroid class...belle, conseco, mcgwire, buhner =)

The funniest part is that Albert Belle is being considered for the HOF while he is resting (or should be, anyways - why would I care to looke it up!

I don't know if you were watching this year, but Detroit made it to the world series, the only bigger joke than that would be if the expos somehow appeared in next season's playoffs.

I met Orel two times when I was younger. He was a dick both of those times.

I met him in 1995 (Indians' Hayday

) and he was pretty cool. Then again, at that time he was one of the best pitchers in baseball, so he had something to be happy about.

To go along with that post, I once heard that he has given ZERO DOLLARS back to BGSU's Baseball program. Not sure if it's true, but the source was one who would know. That was also a few years back, so I don't know if anything has changed since then.

I had heard that, too, from a few sources that would know, but I think I remember being told that he's come around of late. I believe it all stemmed from him leaving before he graduated and not giving until they gave him a degree.

When I was about twelve we were at a spring training game in Vero Beach where the Dodgers play. He was not pitching that day and was not even in uniform. He was standing near the press box during the game. My Dad saw him and told me to go try and say hi and maybe get an autograph. Well he sees me coming up the stairs and immediately gets this look of I need to get out here. He literally comes straight at me and I try to start to say hi to him and he seriously pushed me into the seats and told me to get out of his way and he kept going like I was seriously intruding on him.

I could let that go, but we had another similar confrontation with him when he was pitching for Cleveland and he was equally as nice. Once again it was on a day when he was not pitching. Screw him, I don't want his money. Every experience with the 30 or so Indians I have ever met in Spring Training have acted 100% opposite of the way he acted and would go out of their way to talk to you and sign whatever you want.

The only people we have had bad experiences with were Orel, Bo Jackson, and Ramon Martinez. Orel has the distinction of being a prick twice. So it wouldn't surprise me that he is tight with his wallet too.

I have never even heard some of the guys that played with him have a lot of good to say about him.
