Ranking MAC coaches

Post by Warthog »

http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/mac/phpbb ... hp?t=40488

There is a thread going over on the MAC boards to rank the MAC football coaches. A CMU fan started it and guess who he has as #12? I think a couple others chimed in that they hope Brandon never leaves BG. :x

FWIW, I put Brandon #13 behind Al Golden.

Brian Kelly coached the worst game I've ever seen against BC this year. No way in heck I would put him at #1!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

Brandon @ #12 seems about right. Since we lost to Temple I'd put him down at #13 if we're including the Owls.

I haven't watched enough of all the 1A teams to put a solid ranking together but I'm pretty sure Brandon is in the #110-#117 range overall. Few have taken programs on as much upswing as him and destroyed them quite as effectively. Larry Coker & Ron Zook are right in his class.

1. Bill Cubit, WMU …Immediately turned around a 1-10 team. Monster Florida recruiter.
2. Tom Amstutz, UT…Built on what Pinkel left, 2006 just a mulligan…for now.
3. Joe Novak, NIU…Uncle Joe has built a good but not spectacular program from the ashes.
4. Brian Kelly, CMU…Turned around CMU but no big OOC wins. Will fly the coup soon.
5. Frank Solich, OU…Ditto Kelly.
6. JD Brookhart, UA…Two average years sandwiched between improbable MAC title.
7. Gregg Brandon, BG…Lots of wins but steady decline disturbing.
8. Doug Martin, KSU…Made Kent competitive (!) but has yet to get over the hump.
9. Turner Gill, UB…Make something (Kent win) out of almost nothing. Tough to judge.
10. Shane Montgomery, Miami…Has squandered Miami’s Roethlisberger momentum.
11. Brady Hoke, BSU…Still hasn’t turned the corner after 4 years. Next year is key with good young talent.
12. Jeff Genyk, EMU…Tough job for former BG QB, but must produce better results than have been shown.

I'd rate Cubit, Novak and Amstutz lower, Kelly and Solich a tad higher.

I think Solich, bless his drunken heart, might be #1

that may be true becuase i think he took an overachieving team to a 9-4 record. It was easy to see from the opening kick off who the better team was in terms of athletes. He was just overmatched in the MACC

Solich was a good coach at Nebraska too. And yeah I totally agree about Ohio. That's one team who's record is much better than it's personnel. That's the number one sign of a good coach.

I also believe Solich to be a pretty good coach. Dude got a raw deal at Nebraska, and is showing his abilities at OU. I definitely look for him to move back to a BCS coaching gig in the not-too-distant future.

Solich is a decent coach... he had a stacked team at Nebraska and only went 13-10 his last 23 games. To me thats not grounds for firing, but for Nebraska it was! Since he's been at Ohio he's done a decent job, although I totally think GB has easily outcoached him in every single head to head match-up. Especially last year when we gave them the ball on the opening kickoff at like the 1 and they couldnt score. That's the mark of a Solich team right there, 1st and goal at the 1 against a terrible run D, and a power running offense and they come away with no points! Also his acts off of the field are ugly and he's not exactly a great media/public guy either. I'd much rather have GB at the helm, even if he is just a nice guy... :?

I agree. I think he was roughly 58-20 at Nebraska and played for the BCS Title one year. I think that's pretty damn good but the folks in Lincoln? Wasn't good enough.

In my mind, Novak is No. 1. He brought NIU back from the dead -- and I'm talking EMU dead.
