Just saw a news item on my fantasy league's website that Suisham was signed to the Redskins active roster. That makes five former Falcons (Campbell, Sharon, Suisham, Pope, Mruczkowski) on NFL active rosters.

He's playing today... 2 for 2 on PAT's and missed a 50 yarder wide left. His three kickoffs have gone to the 1, 3, and 5.

ASHBURN, Va. // Shaun Suisham will go into Sunday's game at FedEx Field against the Philadelphia Eagles feeling a little more settled than he did last Sunday, when there was still something of an open competition with Nick Novak for the job as the Washington Redskins' kicker.

Despite missing his only field-goal attempt in a 24-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Suisham got the position when the Redskins released Novak on Monday. It seems likely with the Redskins 4-8 and realistically out of the playoff hunt, Suisham will have the job the rest of the season.

Suisham (pronounced swee-zum) doesn't think his first field-goal try as a Redskin - a 50-yarder that faded to the left - will affect the way he approaches the job. "That may be the truth, but I don't think that's a healthy way to look at things," Suisham, 24, said this week. "I'm looking at it as I'm the guy and I plan on being here for a long time and doing a good job. I don't really evaluate my ability or my performance on one or two kicks."

Longevity is not a word that has been associated with kicking for the Redskins. Since Mark Moseley (1974 to 1986) and Chip Lohmiller (1988 to 1994), the Redskins have had 16 kickers, with none holding the job longer than John Hall, who came to Washington in 2003 and was put on injured reserve after five games this season.

"I'm a confident guy who enjoys playing football," said Suisham, who started this season with the Dallas Cowboys before being cut when Mike Vanderjagt was activated (and later cut by Dallas, too). "More often than not, I'm going to make that kick."

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs had Suisham and Novak dress for the game against the Falcons, but Suisham was the only one who kicked - he made two extra-point attempts. After Suisham's field-goal try missed, Novak came over to offer words of encouragement. "It was a nice gesture by him," Suisham said. "I appreciated that."

Novak's inconsistency - the former Maryland star was 5-for-10 - opened the way for Suisham. So did the fact that Suisham had a stronger leg on kickoffs. Suisham, who kicked a 52-yarder at Bowling Green, isn't putting pressure on himself. It's more about maintaining a competitive edge. "I'm a young guy, but hopefully as a 10-year vet you'd want to do that," Suisham said.

If he can keep kicking like today, maybe throw a clutch game winner in at some point he'll get a real good look next year.

For the record, those four field goals were from 31, 45, 32, and 35 yards. Sounds like a good game to me.
