I always hear that UCONN was not a big basketball school until Calhoun got there. I am curious about this. When he initially came what was he paid and if it was substantially less how were they able to raise his level of pay to keep him around?

It's pretty simple:

Team A is a small program.
Coach A raises the program to "elite" status.
Team A receives money from donors because of team's ability to perform on court.
Coach A receives continual raises due to donors giving money.
Team A prospers.

Also being the largest state supported school in the state, even a small one, goes a loooong way.

There are other examples that people in my generation (born in 1979) have a hard time believing weren't ALWAYS powerhouse programs:

Florida State Football- mediocre until Papa Bowden showed up.

Kansas State Football- the Temple of the 1980s.

Are these what we need to be following?

Also, Conn has no other sports teams of their own during the UConn rise, except the Whalers who were aweful.

One of my brothers lived in Conneticut during the UConn rise....he was a Huskie fan. There's no way a Red Wing fan could root for the Whale..

What ever happened to Nadav Henefeld ?

You have a point, at least Whaler games were available and affordable as opposed to Bruins games who have been aweful but you need to take out a second mortgage to go to a game.
