I think this thread has more creedance or integrity than others, mainly because this is the last year of Dakich's contract, right?BGorDeath wrote:My mom watches a lot of college basketball. BG does have a head coach in place, but I think it is more appropriate in this case to look at who will be on the sidelines next season, whether that is Dakich or whomever.

Larry Hunter was a wild man as a coach! Our seats are in the section behind the visitor's bench and I can still remember his ranting and raving. He had it down to an art form!Schadenfreude wrote:It would be entertaining to see the reaction of fans in Athens, and across the MAC, if we brought Larry Hunter in here.
I'm no hoops junkie, but I like the sound of that.
You make a very valid point. And while this situation is a little more "potentially imminent" than the one on the football field, it's not very different as far as not being in an official hiring position at this time.BGorDeath wrote:My mom watches a lot of college basketball. But we'll keep your mom's number on file.

Good list Option. These are my personal favorites should the position become open.OptionQB wrote: Non-BG guys
John Grobe, Top OSU Assistant, he's probably out of our price range
Others that you've never heard of:
Mike Leaf, Winona (Minnesota) State Head Coach, will probably win back to back D-2 titles this year with top ranked club.
Rick Herdes, Southern Indiana, solid coach built perennial D-2 power in Hoosier state.
Larry Hunter, Western Carolina, is absolutely rebuilding horrible program after wrongly being ousted at OU(MAC experience) by recruiting Ohio kids (Got two from D-4 state champion South Webster and one from Canton McKinley last year alone).
John Groce at OSU has forged an almost legendary recruiting reputation in a very short period of time. He's young, hungry and eager to take over a program and win big. If he leaves after a MAC title, we should be willing to cross that bridge when we come to it.
After the success of Bruce Pearl, I'm really intrigued by Division II coaches who've built successful programs and I'd take a look at any who fit the profile in the Midwest.
Two darkhorses: Fran Frascilla, if he wants to coach again, and Josh Oppenheimer, the top assistant at Kent who's regarded as their best recruiter and one of the overall best in the Midwest. This would strengthen BG and weaken Kent at the same time.
I'd also lobby hard for LaMonta to remain, potentially in a head coaching capacity. He's proven he can recruit and would likely shake things up X's and O's wise.
At this point we have a coach for this season, but we don't have a coach for next year. A coaching hire is imminent, unless we are going to dissolve the hoops program. Now that hire may just be re-upping Dan Dakich, but at this point we are without a coach for next year's basketball season. With recruiting being what it is, and this being a year round job, we need to think about having a hire made by mid-April at the latest.TG1996 wrote:You make a very valid point. Given this situation, I don't think it is at ALL inappapropriate to discuss potential coaching candidates. You think Dan Dakich is the man to hire? Fine, make the case.
Personally, I think this basketball program is long overdue for some new blood.

Personally, my sincere hope is that this team pulls off the unthinkable and runs right through the MAC Tourney this year. And while the chances of that are slim, I'm saying there's a chance. I really like Coach Dakich and would love for him to succeed here.
That said,
If this team falls flat I am not opposed to a coaching change. My intial preference would be Stone. But, I wonder if we are waiting till later in the year to see who else gets let go around the country, which would open up some more potential candidates. I haven't spent any time thinking of anyone on the hot seat, but the first one that comes to mind is Tommy Amaker at Michigan. This would be like a Frank Solich type hire. Coached a big program, didn't succeed, goes to a smaller school to try to resurrect his career. I haven't thought about this too much, but getting a name, would help recruiting you would think. Just a thought.

Time to start another win streak at Wright State.

My mom, who watches a lot of college basketball, so she is knowledgable, says Dakich is safe this year and next. AD Christopher cannot come in and can the football, basketball and hockey coaches at the same time and the hockey program is in worse shape than any right now. She says, and I quote, it's a "pipe dream" for anyone who wants a new basketball coach next year. You are getting a new hockey coach, if anything.
Hockey intriques my mom, but she is more interested in coaching basketball, so she will not put her name in for that position if it opens.

Just got off the phone with mom. She said they would still re-sign the coach. She still doesn't see Christopher filling two major coaching vacancies.BGFalconfromCincy wrote:your mom is right the AD isn't go to fire Dakich, but he is not going to resign himBGorDeath wrote:My mom, who watches a lot of college basketball, so she is knowledgable, says Dakich is safe this year and next. I'm thinking you may want to take your mom to a home...she's clearly losing her mind.BGorDeath wrote:Just got off the phone with mom. She said they would still re-sign the coach.
