Falcon Bball Signees Start Well in 2006-7 Season

Coach Miller's incoming Ohio based recruiting class started well this past weekend. All Ohio scorer Lauren Prochaska's Jonathan Alder team fell to much larger (school wise) Hilliard Darby 42-32. Prochaska had 23 of her team's 32 including nine foul shots. Hopefully, her supporting cast will come together and her team will have a good year.

Top post recruit Kelly Zercher's Waynedale team crushed Loudonville 57-26 and Kelly had 22. Super athletic Lee Jennings led Stow with 22 as they blasted Massillon 70-39. Canton McKinley senior Bianca Hooten had 10 as they bested Shaker Heights 61-52. McKinley should be a very balanced team this year. Versatile Crystal Murdaugh led Dublin Scioto over Glen Este 50-45 with 17 points.

In a marquee early season match up in NE Ohio, top ranked North Canton Hoover edged highly regarded Wadsworth 64-62. BG signee Jen Uhl had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Wadsworth's Grizzlies. Uhl likewise plays on a very balanced team.

And finish too as well. In Michigan the girl's basketball and volleyball seasons are flip flopped. BG signee 6'2" Chelsea Albert has led her Brighton High team to the quarterfinals this week.

fred, thanks for that info on Albert. She has nearly completed her stellar career. Hope they go all the way to state.

Lastly, Morton IL point guard Tracy Pontius has her team off to a 4-0 start.

Not yet. The case is still under appeal. I have heard that the seasons will still be the way they are now for at least another year. Eventually they will change but not until they run out of appeals.

Quick update of future Falcon basketball players shows Stow's Lee Jennings hitting for 31 as Stow routed Nordonia 74-47. Stow is 5-0 on the year. Jennings has proven nearly unstoppable in the early going.

Wadsworth's Jen Uhl is playing well and has helped her balanced squad out to a 4-1 start. The Grizzlies whipped Cloverleaf 73-37 in their last outing with Uhl scoring 17 to go with 7 rebounds.

Dublin Scioto's Crystal Murdaugh team is rolling too. Murdaugh has set out quite a bit of time in a couple of early season blow outs. Scioto beat perennial power Mansfield St. Peter 56-28 last time out and Murdaugh led the team with 21.

Bianca Hooten's Canton McKinley team is off to a little slower start with quite a tough schedule. She has more than held her own and watch for this team to improve as the season goes on.

Jonathan Alder super scorer Lauren Prochaska continues to score 50 to 75% of her young team's output as the Plain City crew gets their feet under them and gets ready for league play. Lauren had 21 in a loss earlier in the week.

Wyanedale's Kelly Zuercher has been a dominant post at her smaller school level and they are undeafeated to this point.

ff1 -- do you think a couple of these freshman, namely Jennings and Prochaska, will be able to step in and compete right away at the MAC level?

Brighton Michigan's Chelsea Albert made the first team Class A All State team per the Detroit Free Press. It is actually more like second team as the Free Press initially names a Dream Team. Albert's team fell in a close game in the Quarterfinals.

Fred, thanks for that Albert update. Ali Mann's area turns out another potentially excellent player.

Jacobs, I think most observers would say that all eight of these signees will compete for minutes with the other six returners. Two reasons- they are good and they HAVE to compete as we lose so many key players. Having said that, we all know how big that jump is to NCAA D 1. They all have had fine AAU etc experience in addition to HS.

Certainly, on paper and/or observation, Lee Jennings and Lauren Prochaska are players who were heavily recruited and are talented. As mentioned in other threads, Jennings is a flat out tremendous athlete. We have at least one of those type of guards right now- Kate Achter is a super MAC player. I would think Jennings can help. Jennings can score, can lead and distribute- she just needs to do it at another level.

Prochaska (pronouced Pro HAS ka) is a scorer- and has scored against good teams, bad teams, great teams, straight up D vs other D 1players, every junk defense known to man and woman, double and triple teams, and so on. I believe she will score for us- how soon she picks up the speed and strength is the same challenge every freshman faces in D 1.

I think Bianca Hooten is a darn good player too and perhaps can be a little in the Carin Horne mold. Likewise Murdaugh out of Dublin Scioto. These are players coming from larger competitive HS's though Bianca's team is off to a liittle slower start. They should be used to competing.

The three bigger girls will certainly get their chance given the senior class make up. Zuercher is a bigger kid but coming from a smaller school- well regarded by many but making a real jump. Albert obviously had a fine Mich. senior season per Fred etc. Uhl comes from a super big school program and plays some serious people on a regular basis. She understands team play. She is a fine student as are several of the signees.

Patience will be needed and expectations will be a little too high. Some will have to contribute awfully early.

But we signed some great players. Just about all observers of Midwest basketball believe so.

Another big week for future BG women roundballers.

Dublin Scioto's Crystal Murdaugh led her 5-0 team to a 64-45 league win over Big Walnut. She had 23 points- 18 in the first half.

Bianca Hooten exploded for 25 as Canton McKinley beat rival Massillon 62-44 and improved to 4-2.

Stow is 6-0 and ranked third by The Plain Dealer in their five county coverage area. Stow won a big Western Reserve Conference game against previously undefeated Hudson in blow out fashion 74-50. They led 39-13 at the half and Falcon signee Liana Jennings had 19.

Jen Uhl's Wadsworth Grizzlies are ranked second in the region by The Plain Dealer. They won a huge league game at Green 74-67. Uhl had 16 points, 10 boards and two blocks. EMU guard signee Cassie Schrock led 5-1 WHS with 25.

Lauren Prochaska continues to put up huge numbers for her Jonathan Alder team. They fell to Bishop Ready 66-54 this weekend with Lauren knocking down 34 of their 54 points including three three point goals.

You realize by continuously updating us on these girls while they're in high school still, it will feel like they've been at BG for 20 years* by the time they graduate.

Not that that's a bad thing...

TG96, I will endeavor to keep these women "in our program" and in your mind for many years.

Preholiday results:

Stow Bulldogs 7-0 as Liana Jennings scores 19 in a little over a half in their 61-39 over Brush.

Wadsworth 6-1 as Jennifer Uhl scores 13 with one three in a half as Grizz blow by Barberton 80-29.

Dublin Scioto 66-41 over Watkins Memorial. Crystal Murdaugh 17 with three threes.

And Jonathan Alder won. They defeated Grove City 69-53. Lauren Prochaska was held to 41!! Yep, ONLY forty one.
