That new movie about that ex MAC team.

We Are Marshall. Its a movie. Its getting lots of press, hype, etc.
So I know we think a modest percentage of Herd fans were and are delusional pricks. Yes, they were booted from the MAC prior to the crash due to various issues, etc.
But they are gone, and wallowing in lousy football.
So do we sneer at the movie, or “let it/them go” and enjoy it for what the movie is worth?
Of course there were at least two other college teams that had plane crashes. Wichita State University lost 31 of 40 players in a 1970 crash, but managed to salvage some of their season. They also had a joint fundraiser with Marshall that year. I think they dropped football not long afterwards though.
Naturally, we all know of the Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo crash in 1969 after the Falcons beat that team.

I probably won't see it because I can't stand Matthew McConaughey. And Marshall. And I don't see many movies in theaters. I'm sure for Marshall-folk, it'll be worth a trip to the Drive-In to catch it, and "from a true story" films usually tend to sit better with me, but I couldn't care less about this one.
Maybe it's harsh, and I certainly understand the emotion of those that were involved with the program at the time, but possibly the one thing I can't stand the most about Marshallites is that not only do they make sure everyone knows they had a plane crash, but they remind you that they're better than you because of it.
Wednesday was the anniversary of the Evansville basketball team plane crash, yet it went virtually unannounced outside of the campus memorial. I wonder how many people would even know about the Cal-Poly crash if we weren't Falcons. (Oh, and it was 1960, unless there was one nine years later that I haven't noticed yet.
) Yet Marshall likes to throw their tragedy in your face and make you feel for them.
WE ARE.....CRIMINALS.

Ah, thats what I get for using an MS NBC page to pull the date on the Cal-Poly crash.
I have a hard time thinking the movie won't be mello-dramatic. Rudy was, but it was/is still one of the great sports movies. I tend to think that is what motivates this movie. Everybody wants to make the next Rudy.
I won't pay to go see it. Might check it out of the Westerville library when the time comes. (incidentally, the library video section down here is staggeringly huge.)
I do think they dwell to much on the crash down there, but with so little else to cling too, maybe I'm being harsh.

The cool thing about Rudy that most people don't know is that absolutely everything in the movie was true to life. The real Rudy was the one who sold the story and he refused to sell it to anyone who was going to change or add anything. I met him, and he told me, so that makes me an expert.NWLB wrote: I have a hard time thinking the movie won't be mello-dramatic. Rudy was, but it was/is still one of the great sports movies. That and the music was so damn cool. Couldn't help but get all warm inside.

I'll probably end up watching the movie...in 6 months...on TV...at 1 am some morning when I can't sleep...and the Gensu Rotary "Set it and Forget it!" Deluxe Power drill, steam cooker, and Griddle by Ronco infomerical isn't on. But pay good money to sit in a theatre and watch it, Hell No!

If I go see it I'll be sure to bring bags of urine and batteries to toss about. You know, just so movie goers can get an "authentic" Marshall football experience.

My dad offered to take me to go see it tonight at a special sneak preview event, so I went. I figured if it really sucked, then at least it wasn't my money. The movie was suprisingly good. It certainly was no RUDY, but it was good. There were some tender moments, and some moments that were so cheesy I had to cringe. Mr. Macannawhatever did a pretty crazy job at portraying coach langwhatever. One thing I really enjoyed about it (and I let out a real loud whoop when it happened) was some town lady throwing up some major props to Bowling Green. I was there in my full orange getup so everyone knew who I was rooting for. On the basis of that moment alone, I would reccommend this movie to everyone.
Yeah right girl!

Thank you, BG Maggot!!!bgmaggot00 wrote:I'm going to see it, as I'm not one to hold grudges against people/schools.
I'm surprised and disappointed at the general responses on this thread...
MU is LONG GONE, and I intend to see the movie when I get a chance...love sports movies in general anyway, and I'm not going to let the fact that we couldn't stand them while they were in the MAC. (Fact is: they DID raise the overall standards for FB while in the conf....notwithstanding their boorish fans)
Think about how dominant they were for many years until the BG's,Miami's, UT's and NIU's upgraded their programs to match. And I still wish we'd have gone for the final "KILLER TD" near the end of their last game here. But to bitch about the movie seems petty to me.

But bitching about people on a message board bitching about a movie -- not petty at all.Class of 61 wrote: But to bitch about the movie seems petty to me.
I have no desire to see this movie, and that has nothing to do with my hatred of Marshall. It's just looks like a crappy movie. In general, I don't see movies that are this highly marketed. If they have to push it that much, it probably won't stand on it's own.
And even though it's based on a true story, it's not believable at all. Like the liquid metal terminator would really die in a plane crash. I don't think so.
Roll Along!
